I was wondering if someone in the 8th could give us a update???

Simon Kenton just newly arrived in this region and outside of their 32nd district games didn't get to play a lot of the teams in the region.

I know Shelby County is the top dog right now but who else doing anything this season.

Sk is now 11-3 and appears to have the 32nd district #1 seed locked up.

Sk has primarily played a 9th region schedule and I for one hope that they continue to do :thumb: so.

Counting Shelby Co. and Simon Kenton only 5 teams in the region have winning records. They are as follows:

Oldham Co. (12-1) With a young team Coach Gary Forrest has really softened up the schedule. It does get tougher, but they should have no problem winning 20 games.

Gallatin Co. (10-5) Carroll Co. is the only "small' school to beat the Wildcats. Their other losses were to Highlands, Grant Co., and Anderson Co. (twice). They have only one senior who plays and rely heavily on freshmen and sophomores. Probably still a year away from beating the big boys.

Anderson Co. (7-5) Three straight have dropped the Bearcats to 7-5. One of those losses was a 47-40 decision to Shelby Co. Usually a tough out when March rolls around.

North Oldham (5-8) and South Oldham (5-10) have losing records, but have played brutal schedules, which could help come tournament time.

I really don't think ranking these region is worth the time it would take. Shelby is sitting at the top and it will take a collapse by the Rockets not to walk through this regional tournament. I know that some of the other teams are traditionally good but this year youth and inexperience will probably spell doom for the other region foes. Simon Kenton is the new face in the region and is currently ranked second but this is all a formality. If Shelby plays they are going to Rupp. It has been a long time since anyone was able to call the 8th so early because it hasn't been this lopsided in a long time.

That was not a ranking of the region. skfan asked for an update and I supplied one. However, I do agree with everything you said.

Thanks for the update Mack. This 8th region is new to me. While I do know of Shelby, because of the tournaments and state rankings they have acheived. Sk hasn't played anyone outside of the 32nd. They do play at Oldham County soon.

Shelby County is obviously the cream of the crop in the 8th and everyone else is fighting for the region tournament. Oldham County has proved themselves with a 12-1 record, however they have played a very weak schedule. Their only loss was by 19 points against a 6-7 Waggener squad that has lost to Moore, CAL, Manual, JTown, Seneca, Valley, and Beth Haven. Oldham had an impressive 18 point victory at South Oldham. Simon Kenton is 11-3 with losses to a very good Holmes squad (-19), Dixie Heights (-5), and Christian County (-20). South Oldham played a very tough early season schedule with losses to JTown, Shelby, Doss, North Oldham, and Desales. Their 18 point loss to Oldham as well as their loss to North Oldham has them behind the 8 ball in the 29th district. The sleeper in the 8th region remains North Oldham. At 5-8, the Mustangs have faced one of, if not the toughest schedules in the state. They have 4 losses to Scott County, JTown, and Elizabethtown twice (21 and 8 points). They lost their season opener at Fairdale by 4 points, at Pulaski County by 1 point in overtime, against Trinity by 1 point on a last second shot, and at Providence of IN by 8 points. Their five wins have come against Desales, South Oldham, Butler, North Hardin, and Christian Academy and they have played only 1 home game. It doesn't get any easier the rest of the way for North Oldham with road games at Oldham, Woodford, JTown, PRP, the Scott County Toyota Classic with a loaded field, and 3 home games against Boone, Highlands, and Shelby.

This Thursday Oldham County hosts North Oldham for the 1st seed in the 29th Distict. The winner of this game will find the easiest path into the Region Tourny. At this point, it looks like the top contenders in the 8th are:

1) Shelby County

2) Simon Kenton

3) Oldham County

North Oldham

5) Anderson County

6) South Oldham

7) Grant County

Whoever makes the 8th Region tourny will be gunning for Shelby County. At that point, you need to look at the teams with the top players and the teams who have been battle tested throughout the season. It only takes one great performance to upset Shelby. It will be an exciting tourny with one heavy favorite and several teams capable of pulling off the major upset on a given night.

I seem to recall Scott County being the favorite every season in the 8th.

Between 2001 and 2005 , Scott Co. won one region title in 2004. Oldham won 2001,2002,and 2003. Bullitt East won in 2005.

True, Go back to Hicks first year 95, 96, 98, 99, 2000,2004. That is pretty dominant. Ah, Anderson in 97.

Scott County was dominant from 95-2000. So was UK. Times change and regional opponents adjusted to Scott's style of play.

Having said that, a few comments on this year in the 8th. First, Grant has played Simon Kenton, Oldham County, Shelby County, and South Oldham. Therefore, some first hand knowledge as to styles of play and personnel.

Clearly, Shelby has the best team. They are very athletic, big and skilled. Having said that, they are not invincible. They do not play hard at all times. They seem to play to the competition and then turn it up for a brief period of time to get in control and then coast. A J Slaughter is as good as advertised. Will probably be a very good player at the next level. Wade dominates with his physical presence. He had a block against Grant that might have been goal tending but I think it even caught the refs by suprprise as he was above the square. They can shut down an inside game with Chambers (6'7" 245) guarding the post and allowing Wade to patrol the lane from the weakside. They also made 9 threes against Grant's zone. Grant could not match up in man to man. They have the #1(Slaughter), #2(Wade) and #5 (White) preseason rated players in the region.

Simon is next in both talent and teamwork. Hester can handle the pressure of Shelby. The question is what about the remaining four on the floor. When Shelby turns it up, it is impressive. The pressure comes from everywhere. When they get it going the scoring comes in bunches. Put on an 18-0 run against Boyle and after Grant closed it to 39-38 with about 3 minutes to go in the 3rd, they went on 17-2 run to end the quarter. They made 3s, hit the offensive glass, and scored out of press. Simon does have the personnel to cause Shelby problems if Simon plays well and Shelby coasts.

Oldham County is the best coached team in the region. Forrest has been around for years and understands the game and the competition. Usually Oldham is bigger in the post with solid guards. They are young and are gaining confidence. Grant lost to them by 1 in the Henry County Tourney. Oldham made free throw with less than 5 seconds to go for the win.

South Oldham is down a little. When Grant played them Howe did not play for the Braves because of sprained ankle. Both teams seemed a little uninspired at an afternoon 5th place game 3 days before Christmas. With both teams at full strength, Grant and South are pretty equal. However, South did get the win that day.

It is Shelby's to lose. However, for the past five years the same thing was said for Scott County. Oldham beat them in 01, 02; Grant beat them in 03; Bullitt East beat them in 05.

Should be fun!

I would love to see SK/Shelby. I don't know how SK would handle pressure, they like to move at a fast pace and sometimes make some silly mistakes going full speed.
