Ryan Ludwick to decline $5 million option

Featured Replies

I never said it was easy. My point is i do not want to pay $7 or $8 million a year to someone who is not one of the best players in the league at his position. He had a very good year and was important to our success, but do you really think he will put those numbers up again? I think his numbers will decline the next 2 years.

You said, "If we can't develop a .275 hitter than can hit 25 homers in GABP, they need to fire every hitting instructor in the system." Since only 20 guys did it last year, how do all these guys still have jobs? Bottomline is it's not a very easy feat to accomplish, and if you want a guy that can/will do it regularly (whether that's Ludwick or someone else), you'll have to pay them a decent chunk of change.

Ludwick will probably be able to get a strong FA contract. Not a strong crop of FAs this year.

You'd be paying at least $12 million a year for someone who was one of the best at that position. $7 million a season to a .275/25/75 guy is a solid investment. He was our best hitter, our only hitter in the playoffs. There is no reason to think he can't duplicate those numbers next season. For the money he his the best option available on the FA market.

I can think of 3 Reds who would disagree with you.

Besides Phillips, who?

Votto hit, not for power, but his average and OBP was very good. Bruce hit .263 with a HR, and as many RBI's as Ludwick.

My comments were mainly to say that Ludwick carried the team offensively production wise. He was clutch in the game 4 and 5 losses but no one else could produce around him. Average is great but they left over 20 runners on base in games 4 and 5.

Ludwick was 1-7 with men on base in the series...
