Alumni Football League

Featured Replies

Anyone intersted in starting an Alumni Football League. Full pads played on Saturday or Sunday and must be players that played at your high school. Players must be out of school 4 years to be eligible to play.

This league would have to meet the Semi-Pro rules, most likely based on The Ohio Valley Football League. No one gets paid- this is for the love of the game. I have approval to have a team play at our JFL Field at Russell.

I just finished watching the special on ESPN Classic about the NYFD and the NYPD league that has 30 teams around the US and thought, WOW this would awesome to do around here.

Anyone have any words on this. ????

Anyone willing to put together a team????

Haha, that's awesome. I know a few Manual guys who would love to play a game or two. Myself included. But I'd hate to play Male!

I wouldn't mind playing.....don't know how good I would be. This would league deal would sound better if it played in the Spring since some of us Coach in the fall.

This is either a really good idea, or really bad one. I'm leaning toward the latter.

I hope you can pull it off, but, based on my experience in reffing a couple of these fiascos I agree with Sandman. Your league should definitely include a team comprised of firefighters because they usually drive the ambulance.

Semi pro schedule is from May to Aug. This would end before regular football season started. This would give the players time to recover before they started teaching again. How many are willing to do this? Any thoughts from local teams in the area?

Like I said- I already have the field to play if anyone is really interested.

I have not put together a team so we could look at doing this in the spring of 2007??

Any takers?????

I would love to, but we in NKY talked about doing this not long ago and didn't get much interest off of BGP. I would say you should go with the build it and they will come philosophy. You could contact the present boosters/allumni clubs and have them send out a questionaire for you. Based on that response I would say you would have your answer whether it is doable or not. If one team did it, maybe more would follow suit.

Doesn't this come up every year shortly after the football season ends? Seems like a couple old hasbeens or never weres try to get this type of thing going to re-live their glory days. Honestly it was a bad idea the last time it was brought up and is a bad idea now. Go bowling or play golf or maybe a beer league softball game but leave football to the kids. You will only get yourself hurt.

I disagree. Some people just love the game and want to continue playing. I have met very few of the people you talk about who actually ever come out to play.

Just how many semi-pro athletes do you know?

Have you ever gone a game?

Just curious as you seem to speak as though your an authority.

I'm SAYIN'!

I played semi-pro last year, with the Louisville Bulls. Try saying that to the oldest player on the team, and you'd be in trouble. I mean, come on, I'm 21! Not exactly ready to trade in cleats for bowling shoes, thanks!

No more an authority then you seem to be. Semi-pro is one thing, although I wouldn't waste my time with that either but just some sort of Alumni League or game is a ridiculous idea and exactly why where it pertains to football it seldom gets off the ground. Just my opinion though. You being an authority on this subject I'm sure will think otherwise. :ylsuper:

Yes I am. I've played and coached. Why is it that you want to degrade people who love the sport enough to still play? I realize that not everyone loves the sport that much, but for those that do, there is an avenue available, and it is very competitive. I've played with Colegiate ALL-Americans and never was's. With past pro-football players and some present. We never put it to a vote as to why and quite frankly, never had too. It was for one reason. They loved playing the game. I realize you are speaking from your personal situation, but you need to realize, not everyone is a broken down hasbeen or never was who would be better off bowling. :D

I have experienced playing Minor professional/semi pro ball and have experience coaching as well at that level. There are plenty of negative connotations that go along with semi pro anything. Truth of the matter is that you do get a lot of passionate players that play very hard at this level. Can it compete with professional ball? No! Does that matter? NO! There are very few organizations that can offer a level of competition that is satisfying enough to attract major college level players and retain them over the course of a few seasons. That being said the competition and camaraderie seen at this level is unimaginable. I would not suggest that "alumni" teams try to play too many existing semi pro teams. (Believe it or not, I have been on the field against Major Harris, Ricky Powers, Jack Walker, and many other professional players that sill strap it on for semi pro teams.) Simply, a good idea if there is enough interest in the area. Let us know if you get something going or PM me and I might be able to add little insight.

 Get over yourself sandman32. I'm degrading no one. Just giving my opinion and when it doesn't agree with yours you go on the attack. I'm thrilled to know you have played and coached. That makes you the authority. Glad you enjoy it, sorry I don't. Sorry that I miss the opportunity to meet other stars of the gridiron such as yourself.:D
