June 26, 201214 yr Sparky Anderson never would let Ken Griffey, or anybody steal when Joe Morgan was at the plate. If you're not going to put on a hit and run with Votto batting, there's no reason to give Stubbs the green light to steal when Votto is at the plate unless you tell Votto what pitch Stubbs is going on so he can let him steal the base straight up. So you're going to take the bat out of your best hitters hands for one pitch if you let him steal? What happens if you tell Votto that Stubbs is going then Stubbs gets a bad jump and breaks it off and Votto takes a pitch right down the middle because he thought Stubbs was going? I'd rather give Stubbs the green light and let Votto swing away if it's a good pitch to hit. There's not going to be many occasions where he hits into a double play.

If you're giving Stubbs the green light to steal with Votto batting then there's really not much of a difference than putting on a hit and run with Votto. Votto can still swing at a bad pitch if a hit and run is on, and not hurt himself if he goes down 0-1 or 0-2 in the count.
June 26, 201214 yr So should he be fired if he gave Stubbs the green light with Votto batting? If that's the case than he shouldn't be batting in front of Votto. With his speed he needs to run just about every time he is on 1st base. He steals successfully at about an 80% rate.

Votto rarely swings at bad pitches. If a hit and run is on and the ball is out of the zone then he's giving up a strike. If Stubbs just has the green light Votto can take the ball that's out of the zone and Stubbs just steals the base. If it's a pitch Votto would normally swing at then he still has that option. I'd take my chance that he won't hit into a double play very often. There's a huge difference between 0-1 and 1-0 or to be more realistic 1-1 and 2-0 (because 1-0 is more of a hit and run count than 0-0)

I don't feel Votto is ever in the hole against a pitcher.
June 26, 201214 yr I think that bunt was all on Phillips. With the way he has been hitting I don't believe Dusty had him sacrificing.

June 26, 201214 yr Looks like a good crowd for a Monday night. What a great night weather wise to watch a game.
