Jim, you diminish your already shrinking credibility when you start throwing the labels around. On what do you base your idea that I am a Tea Partier? Facts please this time as you neglected to check your facts before you posted. The cost to fly the jet to and back would not have exceeded $25,000 and may have been as little as $8000 according to aviation websites. At that cost the market they reached would be reasonable since it was not only in the paper and on the internet, but also on the TV news. I'd say a fair amount of people saw the story. Certainly more than go to many of their shows.

 

I saw different numbers than that. Don't question my credibility just because you disagree with me ideologically. That's a two-way street. I was asking a general question of Tea Party types, in two different posts. But if the shoe fits ...

Jim, do you honestly think those planes just sit on the tarmac day after day gathering dust and that the pilots never fly? Come on those planes fly daily and those pilots fly almost daily to keep their skills up. What does it matter to fly to Cincinnati or to Memphis heck to Paris France. Sure it cost money but it's a cost of having a well trained military to protect our country.

Nope, you said "you fire breathing tea partiers" in response to my post. Nice try. Now back it up. You can't. That's when you lose credibility. Check out the operating costs again. $19000 per hour was the highest I found. Several mentioned $5,000 per hour. 80 minute round trip. Do the math.

As TOG mentioned, Lt. Hiltz was likely to be flying somewhere anyway. Military pilots are required to fly a certain number of hours each month in order to maintain their flight status. I'd rather him fly to Cincinnati and speak to high school graduates than have him fly to Cincinnati just to get his flight time in, go to dinner, and turn around and fly back.

 

Even if Lt. Hiltz didn't need the flight hours, I still think it was a good and worthy expenditure. Jim Schue might not, but his opinion really doesn't influence mine on the matter. Besides, I really think Jim was just trying to stir up the stink with the TP crowd. Problem is, he directed his post towards a poster that isn't even a TPer. Crud, I'd rather have Lt. Hiltz flying his F/A 18 to go talk to high school graduates than have the Air Force flying the First Lady everywhere on vacation.

PS: for those not in the know the F stands for fighter and the A stands for attack. All to often I read the aircraft incorrectly referred to as an F 18. The F/A 18 Hornet is an awesome jet by the way, still to this day. Replaced the F 4 Phantom in the mid 80s for the Marines. As MAG 31 was transitioning to the Hornet, McDonnell Douglas had a flight simulator as MCAS Beaufort. I often was permitted to sneak time in the simulator. Got half at it way decent, although every time I tried to "land it on a carrier", I crashed and burned. Pilots who actually land on carriers (particularly at night) have my devout respect.

LN, my son-in-law is in training to be a United States Air Force Air Traffic Controller and is currently stationed at Kessler AFB, Mississippi. Sometime in early July he and my daughter we be on there way to Luke AFB, Arizona and there he will be directing the new Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II pilots in their training to flew their new jets in landing and takeoffs. The way he talks it's one of the busiest USAF bases because of the training that goes on there.

 

They are really looking forward to the move and me, I am looking forward to late February or early March to visit them and of course to watch the Reds in spring training, as Goodyear Ariz is only about five minutes away.
