May 13, 201214 yr There is also the issue of how the KHSAA or any particular governing body interprets words like "comparable." From personal experience I can tell you in fact that the KHSAA DOES NOT consider baseball and softball to be "comparable" sports. I had a young lady in our baseball program this year, (who by the way I couldn't have been more proud of) and was given that verdict by the KHSAA. While in our case it provided me with the opportunity to coach a tremendous person and athlete, I can see where in some instances it can become a concern.
May 14, 201214 yr Here's the biggest difference I can see: Title IX requires there to be equal opportunities for males and females. Football causes a severe problem here because there is not a comparable sport for females and in order to even things out then a lot of schools have some sports for girls that they do not have for boys. That's the main reason I'm okay with females being able to play a male sport if the school does not offer a female version of it. Generally it is going to be something like football or wrestling and these things have a way of sorting themselves out. I understand the rationale, but you didn't address my question: If a male wants to play volleyball and the school does not have a male volleyball team, do you allow him to play on the female volleyball team?

May 17, 201214 yr I have to play this discussion around in my head a lot. I am all for women and girls playing sports. There are some non contact sports that women can play, and if good enough, let them compete. (I don't believe they should play competitive contact sports with men.) However, the problem with that is ultimately we end up with a coed sport and quotas. Check out adult coed sports. I participated in coed soccer and softball for many years. OK if for fun, but not as much fun if trying to play competitively, and a lot of teams do. And what about women's sports eg. field hockey, volleyball where there are seldom teams on the male side....should men and boys be allowed to participate. Then there is title IX. How many schools have eliminated men's sports altogether rather than absorb the costs of balancing? I know I am not helping the answer, but a lot to think about.
