I didn't see it myself but heard a girl was given a T for flopping on an attempt to draw a charge. This happened at the end of close game and affected the outcome. Is this a legitimate call?

Legal ASSUMING both feet landed at the same time(important distinction) unless it was done legally in the less common way I described above.

 

Again, most high school (heck, college) players do not do it legally. Its tough to call sometimes because of the quick feet so , yes, it will get missed occasionally.

 

IMO, it has nothing to do with 'rural' since every kid all across the country sees the move on TV and tries to repeat it.

I've noticed in my experience coaching, it does matter. The more urban area refs allow such moves more often, where as the "rural" refs have a holy war against all new moves in basketball.

Its the same as the jump stomp, asst coach standing, all other rules. There are alot of rules in the basketball rule book. A good ref is able to see examples of the rule being broken and how pertienent it is to the game and how legit or illegal it was.

 

It all comes down to what the offical wants. If the offical hates how a team takes alot of charges, they will have a look out for flopping.

I'm 99.9% sure that there is no specific mention of the 'jump stop' rule in the rulebook. Its derived by the specific wording of the walking rule and deals specifically with the establishment of the pivot foot.

 

The position of the feet can be however the kid is physically able to make them. Its all about the pivot foot and what happens after that that makes it either legal or illegal.

The exact word is "simultaneously" meaning at the same time. Positioning is not important but if not close together balance and the lack of pivot foot will cause traveling.

 

Curious to know how you determine where a ref is from. Most that I see don't include zip codes on their uniform.

I find it better to actually know them PRIOR to letting the real referee know he missed the call. I'm probably in a very small minority of fans that actually OWNS a rulebook and casebook.

 

Plus, I have to educate HSSRB most of the time.

I would assume that it would not be the first flop but rather a disregard to stop flopping (which can make for a messy ballgame).
