Are the Dusty Baker led Reds just not ready to start the season?

Featured Replies

With a win tonight they're 1 game out of first (assuming the cubs don't blow the 8-0 lead they have right now).

It's 7 games into the season and one of their best offensive threats has only played in half of the games. They'll be fine...

Agreed this Panic attitude is ridiculous 7 games into the season.

A month or two into the season and it's fair game. Not a week into the year...

Have never been a fan of Dusty Baker managing the Reds.

I won't elaborate on this because I think most on BGP know my feelings on the "toothpick"; great people person, bad tactical manager.

Shockingly, I disagree. Stubbs gets terrible breaks on most balls. He's able to make up for it with his speed, but I'd be very hesitant to say his defense is anything more than adequate.

i don't think it's shocking at all. While I like Stubb's potential I don't think he is more than an average centerfielder. I have season seats in the right field terrace and I watch him get awful breaks on fly balls hit directly at him. He rarely gets to shallow flys and has trouble on the balls hit directly over his head. He makes up for his lack of jump with speed. I too am starting to wonder how long you can go with him if he can't cut down the strikeouts.

I had always held out hope we would somehow have Davey Johnson back in the dugout for the Reds. Instead, we get the washed up veteran loving, poor bullpen managing toothpick muncher.

Personally I think it's time to give David Bell a big league shot.

Marty frequently talks about how Stubbs gets great jumps on balls. I have heard others say it as well. Sorry but I would take the HOFer's word over yours. :D He has been calling baseball longer than we have been alive.

He needs to get a look from the outfield then because he does NOT get a great jump on the ball.

You very well could be right. I'm not one who is panicking but I see bad trends that sometimes carry on into the season.

It's way too early, but they have 3 good offensive players out of 8 regulars. That's something to worry about right?

Who's panicking?

The one issue that really bothers me about this team is that they do not really have many contact hitters in the daily lineup. There are too many hitters with holes in their swings. This makes it difficult to have prolonged innings because there are so many hitters in the lineup that strikeout alot.

They have just as much talent, if not more, than every other team in the division.

#1 in runs 2 years ago. #2 in runs last year.

Only offensive stat that matters to me is games scoring 4 runs or more
