Seniors and juniors my fault everybody.

I think that tournament was the reason for the 8th grade hold backs.

for what ever the reason Knott has some great young talent coming in and i look to see great things out of them.

They are all freshmen expect for Stamper and Spencer there in 8th grade but they are elgible because they was held abck in 4th grade

Amburgey, Richardson and Christian were held back in the 8th. They played in the county tournament twice as 8th graders. The first 8th grade year they were demoted towards the end of the year to the 7th, and then promoted back into the 8th grade for the next year. Wouldn't matter about Stamper and Spencer if it was 4th or 7th. They would still be elgible.

No, not for athletic purposes.

 

We haven't redshirted anyone for that reason since the class that graduated in 2000 had three redshirts that held back in the 5th grade in 1992.

 

It's not that we wouldn't have done it, but the kids don't seem to want to redshirt at Owsley anymore. Tyson Gross from last year, and Robert Smith and Daniel Neeley from this year, did not hold back in school. If Owsley had Gross back this year, to go with Smith and Neeley, they would be right up there at the top of the region. Redshirting no doubt helps.

 

Our program will probably suffer from it down the road because a school with 240 kids can't consistently compete with the Knott's and Perry's if they don't redshirt, because those schools, who have an enrollment advantage anyway, will continue to hold kids back.

I don't really agree with redshirting kids for atheletic purposes. Basketball is a secondary reason these kids go to school and lets face it, 99.9% of them will never make a career out of it. For academic purposes, on the other hand, I am for a kid being held back to repeat a grade if needed. This will help him in the future. But holding a kid back so that he will develop better atheliticwise when he is ready academicaly for the next grade, that's almost a lie. But thats my opinion.

I believe maturity should be considered as well. If a kid isn't on a maturity level with his peers, then he should stay back. I wish both of mine had stayed back at some point during grade school. I didn't agree at that time that it was the best thing to do, but now that they're both older I can see where another year of maturity would have been better for everything(academics & athletics included) they're doing now but it's too late! :sleep:

I think if your main reason is academics, then its ok. But soley for more glory days, its exploiting the kids I think. Most of them have no idea in 7th grade what the heck is going on.

I watched the tournament myself and June Buchanan looked pretty good. They beat Fleming Co., Montgomery Co.,and Berea to get third place. The only loss they had was to Henry Clay, which is understandable. I don't know if Stepp deserved the all-tournament team, he missed a lot of shots. Cox had a great tournament though he definetely earned it.

This holdback was for maturity and academic purposed more so than just for basketball.
