  1. As an observer, CCHS has gotten the reputation for being pretty chippy and arrogant. I think it’s deserved. Just need to dial it back a bit for the class school they are. That being said, their defense is crazy good. It’s like they have six players on the court. There are no good shots available against them. I don’t know who has enough scorers to beat them when they’re at full strength. And they don’t even use Walters on offense. I’d press and run them if you’ve got the horses. Not sure anyone does.
  2. Paducah Tilghman in the 70’s-80’s was a bear at home. Owensboro, too.
  3. He’s got another year to play, guys. Next summer will tell the tale. I think there were some questions about his motor when he was younger but those have been dispelled. He can be as good as he wants to be. 6’5” can be a tough size in D1.
  4. Erik is great. The best coach Beechwood’s had in my memory. The junior class is the best I’ve seen. 7 seniors next year. All over 6’2”. Go Wood
  5. Most AAU teams are invitation-only. You don’t get asked if you’re not a talent fit.
  6. When Toebbe doesn’t drive the offense from the post, Beechwood struggles. Draud is a real talent but he and Toebbe are the only players who can score consistently. They never take advantage of mismatches-just run the play. It’s crazy to think a team that beat Newport could look so anemic on offense for two straight games. This team is not good enough on defense to run a slow down offense.
  7. Beechwood sold out all of their student tickets for both games plus tons of adults. Th team played out of character against Knott Co. Sad ending for Ben Toebbe who controlled the game on both ends against a very good Newport team in the 9th Region final. That kid has a huge heart. Tigers also have a very good Junior class and Scotty Draud coming back next year. The future is bright for Beechwood basketball.
  8. Having gone to a 5A school in the 80’s I never knew the All A Classic existed. Our goal was to go the Sweet 16. I recall Carlisle Co taking Henry Clay to triple overtime in the sweet sixteen final in ‘83 with fewer than 100 boys in their high school. But, having a son attending a single A school I now get it. The All A Tourney is really the only realistic goal for most small schools especially w/ bigger schools drawing transfers from other schools or states. The talent pools are too great to overcome unless you get a transcendent player. The 9th region final was incredible theater and Beechwood did not show up well against Knott Co.

  10. Holmes did almost everything right after the first quarter when they missed a ton of layups. Took care of the ball, made solid passes under pressure and made free throws. When they got the lead they made the Tigers play man-to-man and drove the ball. Beechwood made a great comeback but Holmes made all the right moves to get the win. Impressive win. Draud never missed a good shot- just didn’t get many.
  11. Without the programs we’re just watching nameless teenagers run around. There’s no story behind the game-is he an underclasman just getting his first taste of the big stage or a senior playing to extend his career? How tall is that kid? Cheap on Khsaa part.
  12. Adam Kunkel is a very unselfish player and had 33 and 35 points over the break. I haven’t seen a better senior.
  13. In Kentucky High School Basketball can a player slap the backboard during a shot attempt or after? It previously was a techinical foul.
  14. But they’re not in school for 8 hrs, they’re sleeping.
  15. That’s a little inaccurate. The Baugh twins at Center are 6’4” and over 220lbs each. Very aggressive and put opposing centers in disarray. Beechwood will look very different with 10 more fouls to give and imposing presence in the middle. Surrounded by shooters. Let’s see in a month.
