  3. Ben Davis Murray High School, KY D-end nose guard left tackle kicker running back 2024 What were my personal goals going into the 2023 season, and did I achieve them? My goals during the season were to be better than I was last year and to produce more for the team. Yes, I achieved those goals. Who was the best player I played against? The best player I played against was the running back JoJo Starks from Mayfield. What was it like playing for Coach Cunningham? Playing for Cunningham was different because, from freshman to senior year, I had to go through three different head coaches, but honestly, I really liked Cunningham and the way he did things and how well he knew the game. What do I believe my class left for the Murray football program? I believe that we left something of tradition and expectations that they needed to live up to. What were the highs and lows of the season? The highs were playing as a family, playing as one on the field sometimes, and doing as well as we did with a new coach coming in when it did. The lows of the season were injuries. What was the best part of the recruiting process? The best part of the recruiting process was traveling and getting to meet new people and coaches from all over the place. What was the worst part of the recruiting process? The drive was the worst—just constantly sitting there in a car. Can you share some of the schools that recruited you? Union, KCU, Midway, Kentucky State, Birmingham Prep, and Florida Central. What made you choose Union College? I chose Union because they had good football, and the thing I wanted to major in was a 100 percent passing rate. What position was I recruited for? I got recruited to play defensive end. What were your emotions when walking off the field the last time? My feelings and emotions the last time were a lot of things, but I was thinking that it was my last time being on the field as a player and that the younger kids on the team had to fill in my footsteps. What is your favorite type of music, along with your favorite song and artist? My favorite music is rap. My favorite song is Great Gatsby by Rod Wave. My favorite artist is Rod Wave. When you are back home from school, will you try to catch a Murray game? Oh yeah, for sure, if I’m in town, I’m not going to miss the chance to see my guys play. What will you be majoring in once you’re enrolled at Union? I plan on majoring in nursing. 4. Braxton Blackburn Betsy Layne High School, Ky Lb/Lt 2025 What were your personal goals entering the 2023 season, and were you able to achieve those goals? I wanted to become the best version of myself and break records with my team, and we were able to achieve those goals. What is the toughest part of a Betsy Layne practice? Conditioning with Coach Isom. The Bobcats posted a nice 10-2 record in 2023. Of the two teams you lost to, which one was the better, and what made them so good? We lost to two great teams, but Shelby Valley was the better team because of their speed, size, and how fast they played. In watching your Hudl highlight reel, you seem to have fun when you are laying the wood for anyone around you. Is there a college or pro player you pattern your defensive game after? On defense, I try to model myself after Fred Warner, as I love to have fun and attack the ball. On offense, I model myself as Trent Williams, hard-nosed and going to do anything to get the win. I also noticed that when you are on the O-line, you pull very well and are able to get downfield and find someone to hit. Which side of the line is the toughest to prepare for? Explain Defensive line is always a toss up there, either bringing 4 or running some crazy’s stunts, so I would say defensive line is harder to prepare for. Going back to week one of the Clark County Bowl. How special was it not only playing in the bowl game but also getting the win? I missed that game, unfortunately, but it was a big morale booster for our team, and we were able to ride the hot hand throughout the season. Who has been the best player you have ever faced in a game, along with the team he played for? Martin County’s Bryston Wells plays with great speed and physicality; he really is a beast. What are your thoughts on girls playing on the football team? We don’t have any, but I think if they can play, let them play. Where should the state finals be held? Kroger field If you could change one rule in high school football, what would it be, along with the reason? Celebrating after you make a big play or score, I think you shouldn’t let it get too excessive, but hitting a celebration after a score should be aloud. Have you heard from any schools as far as playing at the next level? Could you please name some of the schools? Kentucky Wesleyan, along with Westfield State, has shown some interest. What is the biggest thing you need to improve on to become a better all-around player? Being able to read the defense on offense. Defense I need to improve on being in my gap as soon as the ball snaps. Have you ever been to a Pikeville University football game? Yes, it’s a great atmosphere with great coaching staff. Other than sports, what are some of the things you do for fun? I love fishing, and along with fishing, some consider me a pro bowler. What is your favorite type of music, along with your favorite song and the artist? Rap is my favorite genre. My favorite artists are NBA Youngboy,Drake, and Little Baby. My favorite song right now is No Hook by Key Glock. Link to article with pics https://hearltlandfan15.blogspot.com/2024/02/2024-interview-with-braxton-blackburn.html
  5. Monday and Tuesday I was sick. Worked Monday but Tuesday I lasted one hour and had to go home. I have missed 2 days of work in the last three years.
  6. Travis Burns Pulaski County High School Head Football Coach Congrats on getting the head coaching job at Pulaski County! Would you share with everyone your coaching career, from your first job up to your current position? I started my coaching career at George Rogers Clark High School in 2015 as the linebackers coach. In 2016, I started at Boyle County as the outside linebackers coach. I was in Boyle County for 8 years. My most recent role was Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator. Now I am the head football coach at Pulaski County High School. Have you decided on the offense and defense you will run this season? Offensively and defensively, we will look very similar to what we did at Boyle County. Establishing the run and stopping the run. I have talked to enough coaches who have taken over a program, and it seems the common thread from last year does not matter. We are starting all over. How much of who started last season will play a part in who starts this season? I agree with the other coaches. Last year does not matter. It is all about work and production. The best 11 will play. Could you share some of the changes you plan on making to help the team recover from the 4-8 record posted this past season? Well, we were very young last year. A lot of players have another year to grow and mature. I'm big on it; it’s not what we do, but how we do it. Emphasis on how we practice and the mindset of the teams. Who are some of the coaches you have learned the game from, and how much of what you have learned from them will you incorporate into what you do? Two of my bosses at Boyle County were Chuck Smith and Justin Haddix. Both of them are legends in their own right, and both of them made huge impacts on me as a coach. The lessons that I learned from them and others that I worked with are essential to who I am as a coach. What are your thoughts on playing out-of-state teams, and will you be playing any once you have openings in your schedule? With the current state of the RPI in Kentucky, it’s hard to play an out-of-state team because of how they factor into the RPI. I do not foresee us playing an out-of-state team unless we have to. What changes, if any, would you make to the playoff format that the state of Kentucky has? I have really benefited from the current format. For the most part, it has done a great job of getting the best teams to the dance. I do believe some changes need to be made to how it is calculated. What are your thoughts about students playing multiple sports? I think athletes should play all the sports they want to play. Other sports will teach them things that they will not get as a football player. How important is it to you that all of the lower levels throughout the program play a full schedule? It’s essential that all levels play a full schedule because if they don't, then they are limiting the number of reps they can get. Live reps are important to a player's development. Should all teams in the program run the same base offense and defense? Explain Yes, it should be the same at the lower levels as it is at the varsity level. This allows kids to already be prepared with their terminology, concepts, and techniques, and you can keep pushing farther forward. Do you think the price of a ticket for a high school game is getting to the point where the casual fan is no longer attending as many games as they did 10 or 15 years ago? No, I believe that streaming services have allowed casual fans to still watch the game from the comfort of their own homes. What sports did you play in high school and college? I just played football. What is the one sport you cannot watch on TV? Baseball. What is a talent you have that might shock your players? I’m not sure on that one. 8. The Bobcats (18-4, 10-1 MAAC) had little difficulty blasting Canisius today by the score of 88-63. The Bobcats hit 49.3% of their shots, including 56% from beyond the three-point arch. Leading the path to the win was, Matt Balanc (Silver Spring, MD) 23 points and 2 assists. His co-pilot in the win was, Amarri Tuce (Newburgh, NY) 18 points and 9 boards. For the Golden Griffins (8-13, 3-8 conf) Cam Palesse (Waukesha, WI) had 14 points and 6 boards. As a team, the Golden Griffins hit just 33.9% of their shots.
  9. Purdue (21-2, 10-2 Big) escaped Wisconsin (16-6, 8-3 Conf) today in Madison by six points. Zach Edey (Toronto, ON( had a game-high 13 boards to go with 18 points and 3 blocks. Leading the winners in scoring with 20 points was, Lance Jones ( Evanston, IL). Jones also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Tyler Wahl (Lakeville, MN) led the Badgers with 20 points and 7 boards.
  10. Carter Schroer Dixie Heights Safety/DE/LB 2024 What are you going to miss the most about playing high school football? What I'm going to miss the most about playing is that I will never be able to play with the brothers that I've grown up with and have played with since I was 6 years old. What is your biggest regret looking back on your football career at Dixie Heights? My biggest regret is losing back-to-back close games in the final seconds to Beechwood and Cov Cath. It was my last time playing those two schools, and to lose and suffer heartbreak is a hard pill to swallow. What is your favorite memory from playing football? My favorite memory from playing football was upsetting Woodford County in the first round of the playoffs this year after being huge underdogs. How important is it to you to be invited to play in the Northern Kentucky All-Star Series game? It is very important to me because I believe that I am one of the better Northern Kentucky players, and I felt like I proved that this year! What were your feelings as you walked off the field for the last time as a high school football player? The emotions were really high because knowing that was my last ever high school game and, at that point, thinking it was my last ever football game really just hurt me and didn’t feel real. What has football taught you that you can use in life off the field? No matter what happens and what setbacks bring you, you just have to keep fighting and prove that you can do it. If you could go back and play one last high school game, who are you playing against and why that team? The game would be the Cov Cath game this year, when we lost on a 4th down touchdown with 13 seconds left. It was a heart breaker, but the best a Dixie team has played in a while. Dixie hasn’t beaten Cov Cath since 2007, and when I stepped foot at Dixie, the goal was to beat Cov Cath. Knowing we came that close to beating them was a terrible feeling but also a good one. Safety, Linebacker, and Defensive End. Of the three positions you are listed as playing, which one are you being recruited for? Of the 3 positions, the most I would say are an outside linebacker and a defensive end spot. Can you share with everyone some of the teams that are recruiting you? I am committed to Bellarmine University, but I also had teams like Ohio Wesleyan, Mount St. Joe, and Otterbein. What has been the best and worst part of the recruiting process? The best part was finding my home at Bellarmine, and the worst part was going on those long car rides. Since you have signed with a school close to home, will you go back and watch any Dixie Heights games this year? With Bellarmine being in Louisville, I will definitely come back and watch a game! What will you be majoring in once you are enrolled in college? I will be majoring in nursing! What is one sport you wish you could play but do not have the talent for? I wish I was a good golf player, but for me, it’s not mine! Who is your favorite athlete? My favorite athlete is Jamarr Chase. What was the last book you read along with the author? The last book I read was Their Eyes Were Watching God by Nora Zeale Hurston in reading class! 11. Thursday was work and the gym Friday was work Saturday was Work (OT Shift) and the gym
  12. Some Wac-action and another one-point win for Seattle (13-9, 6-5 Conf) who needed not only a late-game comeback but an offensive rebound by Kobe William (Melbourne, VIC)who somehow put the ball in the hoop while being fouled. He also nailed the free throw securing the win. For the game, he scores 9 points with 5 boards. Three of his rebounds were on the offensive end. Calfornia Baptist (13-8, 6-4 conf) had won five straight conference games. Leading the Redhawks was, Cameron Tyson (Bothell, WA) 18 points, and 5 boards for the Lances of California Baptist, Dominique Daniels Jr. (Compton, CA) had a game-high 26 points and 2 assists.
  13. A good battle out of the Missouri Valley Conference. Indiana State (20-3, 11-1 Conf) blew a 17-point lead but rebounded to post the eight-point win. Drake (18-5, 9-3 Conf) The teams split the two games and both should/could make it to the conference tourney final if things do not go awry. Ryan Conwell (Indianapolis, IN) had 21 points, 7 boards, and 3 assists for the winners. His top help came from, center Robbie Avila (Oak Forest, IL) with 20 points, 11 boards, and 4 assists. For Drake, Tucker DeVries (Waukee, IA) led all scorers with 26 points and 10 boards.
  14. UC Davis (14-9,9-2 Big West) almost blew a double-digit lead as they held on to beat Cal Poly (4-19, 0-11 Conf) in a tight defensive battle out of the Big West Conference. The winners were ice-cold from the field hitting 37% of their shots while the Mustangs hit 34%. Elijah Pepper (Selah, WA) led the Aggies with 16 points, 8 boards, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Kobe Sanders (San Diego, CA) had 14 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals in the loss.
  15. Riley McGrath Dixie Heights High School 2024 Safety, corner, receiver What were some of your biggest goals, and how did you accomplish them? Heading into the 2023 season, my biggest goal was to overcome the collarbone injury I had my junior year and help my team win any way I could. I would say I achieved those goals by earning a starting job on week 1 and helping out on both sides of the ball when my number was called. How has your class left a mark on Dixie Heights? I think it’s safe to say that the Dixie Heights 2024 class will not be forgotten. With it being our head coach's second year with a brand new staff, we made an impact. Even though we didn’t finish out the season how we wanted, we set a new standard of being one of the hardest-working teams in the state. Which side of the ball do you feel you are better at, along with the reason you believe so? I believe naturally I am a receiver; I understand spacing and how to read the defender pretty well, as well as just having natural receiver attributes. I played most of the season at defensive back and safety, though, because that’s where I was needed the most. I feel I am a very balanced player, but I definitely enjoy the offensive side of the ball! If you are invited to play in an all-star game, will you? 100% of the time, any opportunity to play more football is one I’d take! What regrets do you have about your high school football career? Not capitalizing on big moments in our senior year. We played some of the best teams in Kentucky and played them very well, but ended up losing close games because we couldn’t capitalize when it was needed most. In your eyes, what was your biggest accomplishment on the football field? Bouncing back from a pretty bad collarbone surgery, I only got to play two games my junior year, and it was a really long recovery, but I came back stronger than ever and was fortunate enough to have a good season. Who was the best player you ever went up against in a game, along with the team he played for? I would have to say my guy and former teammate Willie Rodriguez out of Cov Cath is definitely one of the most physical players I’ve played with and against. Can you tell us about some of the schools that are recruiting you? Bellarmine, Ohio Wesleyan, and Anderson, just to name a few! What has been the best part of the recruiting process? Honestly, I’ve loved the whole experience, the ability to learn things from a variety of different coaches and different programs, and being blessed with plenty of opportunities to see what was the best fit for me! What has been the worst part of the recruiting process? Like I said, I’ve loved all of it, but honestly, my least favorite part was that I didn’t learn more about the process before I started getting recruited because I feel like I kind of went in blind, and if I knew what to look for already, it would’ve made the process a lot smoother. What must you improve on the most before you step onto a college field? Honestly, I’ve never been more ready to get back to playing ball! I’ve just got to stay explosive and maintain the weight I’ve been building up! What is a talent that you have that would shock others? Honestly, I like to view myself as a do-it-all type of guy, meaning I can play anywhere I’m needed. My willingness to compete and get on that field will definitely shock some people this fall! What is one sport you wish you could play but do not have the talent to do so? I used to play baseball up until high school, but I couldn’t touch the pitches these guys are throwing now. What is your favorite genre of music, along with your favorite song? I like it all, but I listen to rap a lot, like Pregame, and in the weight room, my favorite song switches up a bunch, but right now it’s never recovered by Little Baby, Gunna, and Drake. 16. Elon (10-13, 3-7 CAA) Picked up a much-needed conference road win tonight over a Spunk N.C.A&T (7-16, 5-5 Conf). Elon hit 48.9% of their shots in the win led by Zac Ervin (Gate City, VA) who came off the bench to score 12 points to go with 3 rebounds. Jalal McKie (Atlanta, GA) had 23 in the loss. Camian Shell (Winston-Salem, NC) had 22 in the loss.
  17. What a good game. Harvard (11-7, 2-3 Ivy) trailed for most of the game before taking the lead deep into this one, then they hung on as Columbia (10-8, 1-4 conf) missed a potential game-winning three with seconds left. Malik Mack (Oxon Hill, MD) led the winners even though he played very poorly in the final few minutes. 18 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Chisom Okpara (Bronxville, NY) 13 points, 7 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals. For Columbia, Kenny Nolan (Apex, NC) came off of the bench to score 12 points and pull down 5 boards.
  18. Name: Randy Cross Pro Team SF 49ers College Team: UCLA High School Crespi Carmelite First, thank you for giving me the time. I will go back to when you played high school football. What is the fondest memory you have of those days? I enjoyed playing defense and being able to dominate my side. In high school, I didn’t much care for playing offense. What made you choose UCLA? I grew up a fan. Besides UCLA, what other schools recruited you? USC, Nebraska, Alabama, Texas, and Notre Dame What was the game you remember the most from your time at UCLA, and then the game that you wish you could forget? Beating #1 Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Losing to USC my sophomore year Who were some of the best players you played with and against in college? Mark Harmon, John Sciarra, Wally Henry, Wendell Tyler, James McCallister, Kermit Johnson, Fulton Kuykendal, Jimmy Allen, Cliff Frazier, Manu Tuiasosopo, Jerry Robinson, Gary Jeter, Chuck Muncie, and Dave Pear Growing up in Ohio long before cable, the USC/UCLA game was always on TV. What are your fondest memories from those games? Obviously, the wins were the highlights, led by the 65+75 games. You were the 42nd player taken in the draft (2nd round). What were your emotions like on that day, waiting to have your name called? Apprehensive and excited How nervous were you at the first practice being surrounded by guys like Jim Plunkett, Gene Washington, and all of the other veterans? Pretty excited, actually. Then we went out to practice to face one of the best defenses in the NFL, the Gold Rush. What was it like to start 10 games during that rookie year? It was. An honor When you made the move from center to guard, how tough was that, along with why the move was made? Bill Walsh wanted to run an offense featuring pulling guards, and I could run. It was a compliment I intended on following through on. 1982 Super Bowl Champions: As a Cowboys lifetime fan, I still cringe every time I see "THE CATCH." What do you remember about that play? How high Dwight jumped, and then the utter bedlam that followed. What was the feeling heading into the Super Bowl? How confident were you and the team heading into that game? It was truly just the next game and challenge. Who was the better team that year? The Cowboys or the Bengals? Probably the Cowboys How hard was it to decide you were retiring for the NFL? It was hard, but I had always told myself the last thing I’d do was just hold on to squeeze out 1-2 more years. Plus, it gave me the chance to go out on top. Can you tell the fans what you have done since leaving the game? I’ve been doing TV and radio since 1989, the first 20 years of the NFL, and since then, CFB.
