  1. Oh come on. I think he's referring to the fact it would be an upset, like was the case in the 1998 title game...

I've said this before and I'll say it again: If you had seen Danville play all season in 1998, you would realize this wasn't that big of an upset. In my opinion there have been several Danville teams not make it to Louisville that would have easily handled that years version of the Admirals.

I think the Caldwell-Danville game gets tossed in the upset pile on the basis of name recognition; people know Danville and don't know Caldwell County.

For the record, I really liked that Caldwell County team in 1998.

  2. Yeah, I think the fan base is there, I would love Danville to be in our Alliance Bowl, would be perfect!!

I doubt that will happen. Danville currently hosts their own bowl game on the opening weekend of the season. Its a really big draw and they usually get some quality teams from the Central Kentucky area.

The Mayfield-Danville days may very well be over...which is unfortunate for the Ads!

  3. Is the game really going to be at Highlands? Saw the schedule in the paper today. If the game was played somewhere that could hold 10,000 people at $10 each, that's $100,000. I guess Highlands can afford to leave a lot of money on the table. For my next question? If it's really at Highlands, what are the chances of anyone getting a ticket?

I know they aren't moving the game, but it seems like if they did, Highlands would have to pay a rental fee of some kind. Overselling their home field and collecting ALL of the money seems like the best plan. Good marketing strategy by the good folks in Fort Thomas!

  4. If Bourbon County has improved drastically, you might could make a case for a couple wins. Perhaps Paris (at Bourbon), Western Hills (at Bourbon), Anderson (at Bourbon) and maybe a win at Harrison considering everybody is saying they have lost everything.

With that being said, I don't see any wins on the schedule for Bourbon County this season, which is unfortunate because I think they are a team that has improved tremendously.

  5. Does anyone know where you can park at Lex Cath?

A few year ago Harrodsburg played there and thay had a bus running from the school to Turfland Mall...Aynone know

That has been a few years back. Remember too, that game featured a quality Lexington Catholic program (Class A at the time) against a Harrodsburg team that was probably one of the 10-15 best teams in the entire state. You won't see that type of crowd there tonight, although it will be solid.

There's plenty of parking up and down Clays Mill Road at the various schools and churches. You're probably better off parking away from Catholic and walking instead of getting caught up in the log-jam at the school after games.

  6. Letcher in a big way. Too much coaching for Letcher.

Is Letcher County Central expected to take a big step forward this season? I know last year they won four ballgames but were absolutely destroyed by Madison Southern, Bell County and Rockcastle County. That's normal for most teams in most years, but Clay County and Knox Central each held their own against these three district foes. Also, Letcher's only win came in a nail-biter, 14-7 over Perry Central early.

Can we expect Letcher County Central to emerge as this years "Madison Southern" and be the #3 team in that district? If not, how far off is Letcher Central from being a quality Class AAA team?

  7. Due to field conditions at Boyle Co.,the game between Boyle Co. and Harrison Co. which is the first game of season Aug.18 has been moved to Harrison Co.

Can any of you Harrison Co. fans tell us Boyle fans, how to get there?

What are the conditions of the field? Is it really dry or did they install something new?

  8. I don't remember Lincoln County ever having a Patriot like New England's on the helmet. They had that on some jackets and shirts when the school first opened but never on football helmets.

From 1974-1983, LC had the player's number on each side of the helmet like the University of Alabama. The helmets were blue and the numbers were white.

From 1984-1986, LC had a design (kind of a swoosh) that said "Pats" in it on side of white helmets. BTW, during that time, the player of the game from the previous week would wear a helmet painted red....talk about a marked man.

From 1987-recently, LC had the block L on the helmets. Recently, they went to a different font L that resembles the University of Louisville.

Maybe I was wrong. I was thinking that Lincoln had the New England Patriot in the mid-1980s. I was pretty young then; I might be confusing them with shirts or something else!

  9. I understand your point, just don't agree with it. You're basically saying that Boone gets extra credit for being in 4A, the largest class, even though that is the class in which they have to play because of their large enrollment.

Heck, some teams have won state titles (Danville, Mayfield and probably even Highlands) while playing up.

I see what you're saying. Take away my 4A comment. Would you agree with me, though, that Boone is the best school not to win a state title?

  10. I don't know that Boone's presence in 4A makes that much of a difference in itself. It isn't like they're a smaller school playing up in class ... their enrollment mandates they're in the state's biggest class.

My reasoning is that they've always had to go through the best teams in the entire state to win a title. For instance some teams like Danville, Mayfield, Corbin, etc. (small schools) don't always have to beat great teams to win a title. Boone County always has to beat, if not the best, one of the top two or three teams in the entire Commonwealth regardless of class just to get there (St. Xavier, Trinity, Male; occasionally Clark County, Dunbar, Henry Clay, etc.)

  11. I wonder hown many times Boone has been eliminated by the eventual state champ...

Boone County has lost 4 times in the state championship game.

    1986: St. Xavier, 27-14

    1987: Shelby County, 17-14

    1992: St. Xavier, 3-0

    1994: Trinity, 21-7

Boone County has lost 7 times to teams who went on to win the state championship.

    Trinity: 1988, 89, 90, 2003, 05

    Clark County: 1991

    Male: 1993

Boone County has lost 7 times to teams who finished as state runners-up.

    Greenup County: 1977

    Owensboro: 1983

    Lafayette: 1985

    Henry Clay: 1995

    Dunbar: 1996

    Trinity: 1997

    Scott County: 2004

    *****

So to conclude, Boone County High School has had 18 seasons end with a loss in either the state final, to the eventual state champion or to the eventual state runner-up, with all of this taking place since 1976.

18 times in 30 years the Rebels have played a significant role in determining the state champion. Pretty good history!

  12. That illustrates the farce that mythical state titles are .. two teams are claiming the state title in the same year.

Doesn't that remind you of the following:

    Colorado-Georgia Tech, 1990

    Miami-Washington, 1991

    Nebraska-Penn State, 1994

    Michigan-Nebraska, 1997

    Southern California-Louisiana State, 2003

    Just to name a few!

  13. Interestingly enough I think they won a state title in their last year of existence too.

Flaget closed after the 1973 season. They tied Thomas Jefferson High School for the Class AAA state title in 1971. Flaget finished 6-4 in 1972 and 3-7 in 1973, the final year of football. Neither squad made the playoffs.

  14. Hancock had Lafayette on the schedule ... I'm guessing they dropped the Generals.

Lafayette, looking to replace Hancock, picked up ... Fulton County, one of the smaller football schools in the state. The Pilots were a game short and will get a long road trip for a Saturday afternoon game ... and hopefully, a big check.

Fulton County?! Wow. Actually, Lafayette has a little history of playing some "obscure" teams early in the season. Not saying these teams are bad, just odd opponents for a AAAA school in Fayette County.

    1998: Breathitt County

    1999&

2000: Both North & South Laurel, although they had previously been district opponents

    2001: John Hardin

2002: Logan County & John Hardin

2003: Boyd County & Louisville Western

2004: Louisville Eastern, along with Boyd & Western

    2005: Jeffersontown & Hancock County

    2006: Jeffersontown & Fulton County
