  1. I like having defined regions.

I think they should just outright eliminate regions. Have eight districts split into two sections, East and West. This would guarantee that the state championship game would pit a "west" team against an "east" team. Let District 1-4 play in the Western Section and 5-8 play in the Eastern Section. Then set up the postseason just like sectional tournaments in baseball.

Each class, 1A through 6A should all be the same. For example:

    Season One

    District 2 @ District 1

    District 4 @ District 3

    District 6 @ District 5

    District 8 @ District 7

    Season Two

    1@4, 3@2, 5@8, 7@6

    Season Three

    3@1, 2@4, 7@5, 6@8

    Season Four

    1@2, 3@4, 5@6, 7@8

    Season Five

    4@1, 2@3, 8@5, 6@7

    Season Six

    1@3, 4@2, 5@7, 8@6

  2. That will most likely be Woodfords last win of the year. They may sneak one out against Bryan Station. Henry Clay and Scott Co will destroy them on offense.

They will definitely be underdogs against Scott County and Henry Clay, just because those schools have such a strong passing offense. Woodford County should be able to beat Bryan Station, and then hope they can knock off either Lafayette or Tates Creek, and make a push into the playoffs. I would imagine the Lafayette and Tates Creek games are more winnable, just because they aren't the type of teams that come out and put 40-50 up very quickly.

  3. Playing a lot of one-half football will be Mercer's downfall come November.

I don't know if it will be a downfall. Looking at the last three champions of Class AA, all have had relatively easy runs through the regular season, along with games that allowed for resting of regulars.

    2003- Belfry

Finished regular season 8-2, winning by an average margin of 20.9 points per game. Only losses were the opener to Boyd County and to Ironton in October.

    2004- Belfry

Finished regular season 9-1, winning by an average margin of 26.9 points per game. Only loss was late season against Ironton.

    2005- Russell

Finished regular season 9-1, winning by an average margin of 22.9 points per game. Only loss was early, a 33-14 defeat against Boyd County.

    2006- Mercer County

Currently 4-0, with an average win of 43.0 points per game. There are four easy wins remaining on the schedule (Casey, North Oldham, Henry and Spencer), with potentially tighter games with Newport and Lloyd.

All of this simply shows that Mercer has been winning by larger margins than Belfry and Russell in the past, but also that those schools didn't let that bring them down in the postseason. I don't think Mercer is a Class AA title "shoe-in" this year, but I don't think "rest" will be their downfall.

  4. I say move the tourny to the East KY Expo Center for a year and see what happens...

If the tournament was moved to the East Kentucky Exposition Center, I think you would see the 13th Region gradually fade out of competition. The travel is just too difficult for the winter.

  5. I'm in the early stages of a historical project on high school football in Kentucky. More details will be forthcoming, but I could use the help from BGP. If you have season-by-season results from your school (or a school) I would greatly appreciate you sending it to me. Just go under my name and send it to my email.

I thank you for your participation and assistance!

  6. Is LCA throwing the ball as much this year as last? I know they started off slow (losing to Mercer-who hasn't?!), but it seems like they are playing better. If they line up and try to pound it with Bath, the Wildcats could pull the win.

Also, Eagle Eye, like you said about last week's Bath-Fairview game, its really hard to compare scores to pick out a winner. Even still, give me LCA in a tight one.

  7. It seems like the same comments are made about Garrard County every week. Frankfort should win the ballgame because of the Lions lack of speed. This was exposed in losses to Paris (46-7), Lincoln County (41-0), Mercer County (49-7) and to a lesser extent, Clark County (49-27). While the scoreboard has shown losses, the Golden Lions have played much better in the last two weeks. I think Frankfort will win, but Garrard will continue to improve.

    Frankfort 46, Garrard County 24

  8. I am posting this for information ONLY - no judgements:

    Bath Co. vs Opponents:

    W.Carter (3-2) (2A) 35-25 Won

    Lewis Co (0-5) (2A) 21-0 Won

    Morgan CO (0-4) (2A) 32-18 Won

    Fairview (2-3) (1A) 26-0 Won

    114-43 outscored opponents

    Opponents records equal 5-14

    LCA vs. opponents:

    Mercer Co. (5-0) (2A) 0-63 Lost

    DeSales (1-3) (2A) 28-10 Won

    CAL (1-3) (2A) 21-0 Won

    Corbin (1-4) (2A) 7-20 Lost

    Raceland (4-1) (1A) 21-10 Won

    77-103 outscored by Opponents

    Opponents records equal 11-11

Food for thought - if meaningful - probably not...

Those stats lead you to believe that Lexington Christian will beat Bath County. While Bath's opponents do have a weak combined record, it also shows that the Wildcats handled all four teams. I think LCA will win, but Bath should put up a good fight.

  9. I use the last rankings/polls published at the end of the regular season.

I think all polls and ratings get more accurate in the latter stages of the season, as they each have more evidence on which to base the ratings.

Looking at the later rankings will always be accurate. While you might not necessarily agree with the Litkenhous or Cantrall ratings, I do like one aspect of them: they wait three weeks into the season before they are released. Not to dip into a college subject here, but the college polls would be much better if they saw teams play a few games before getting their rankings.

  10. What I don't like is next year in the Lexington 6A district there is only four teams. Dunbar, Henry Clay, Lafayette, and Tates Creek so no one will have to win a game to make the playoffs. Either we don't need 6 classes, the district needs to be re shuffled, or we need to change the playoff format to where only two teams from your district makes the playoffs. Not winning a district game and making the playoffs is a joke.

While I understand the complaint, keep in mind, football is the only sport in the state that requires any type of qualification for the post-season. Baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, softball, volleyball, etc...all get a free pass into the district tournament. I don't think this will "kill Kentucky football" the way many like to it will.
