  1. Don't get ahead of yourself now. Mercer played their worst game of the season. I wasn't going to put that in my original post. You saw an uninspired team out there tonight. Check the South Laurel/Southwestern score. There isn't any excuse for them to take a game off. It seemed they couldn't get into the game. But, I don't think Mercer planned on showing much tonight the week before playing Boyle co. We played bad and won 49-0. Final.

I agree with that. I think Mercer County came out flat after a week off and was obviously playing an inferior opponent. Mix in the fact that they very well could have been looking ahead to next Friday's big game with Boyle County. I know Mercer didn't play great, but I still didn't think their offensive line was dominant and that's what I look for when determining who is a state title contender.

  2. Final.

Mild surprise, in my opinion. Tough night in Bullitt Co. Valley bounces back from a throttling last week (v. Central) to get a nice win tonight.

    Insight anyone?

I think Central is throttling everyone, so that may not be the best measuring stick. I've heard good things about this Valley squad. Could Bullitt East or North Bullitt miss out on the postseason this season?

  3. Good win by the Patriots. I can see them finishing second in their district, although they have tough games with Clark County, South Laurel and Whitley County.

As for the Rockets, I think they can still win their district, simply because the Bell County game is in Mount Vernon.

Both Lincoln and Rockcastle can make a little noise in their classes this season!

  4. Final. I thought the young Lions played tough.

Much better job by the Golden Lions tonight. Don't let the final score fool you; take away an 85-yard touchdown run with 20 seconds let in the half and this is a 14-0 game at halftime. Mercer still would have won, but Garrard looked much better.

I feel better about upcoming games with Grant County, Casey County and Wayne County.

Mercer County looked pretty good, but I question their ability to win in the trenches against a big Russell or Belfry team in Class AA, or even Boyle County in next Friday's big game. They won't get dominated up-front, but I can see them being systematically controlled up front and it ending with a 21-14 playoff loss. I could be wrong. Best of luck to the Titans.

  5. They sure have weakened their schedule. Thats never a good sign.

Yes and no. Remember, five of those games are required district games (Casey, Jackson, Somerset, Taylor and Wayne). The Estill County game is a bowl game in Stanford and I'm not sure who the opponent is for the following season. Frankfort is the return game of a scheduled game this season, just because Garrard wants the home-end of the contract. And then Lincoln County is probably the biggest rival for Garrard and a game that will hopefully always be on the schedule.

The only "weaker" opponents are Bethlehem and Pendleton County. With the struggles Garrard has had last year and this year, plus with a relatively young returning squad next year, this is probably a good move.

  6. Why has Garrard Co. fallen so far so fast? They had some very good teams just a couple of years back and enjoyed the Hounds games against them.

Can they be competitive in the Corbin game this year?

Garrard had a really good stretch of talent for an extended period of time. Starting in 1988, the Golden Lions only had five losing seasons prior to this season. That may not sound like a huge accomplishment, but remember Garrard had only won 99 games total in the previous 24 seasons.

Garrard has now hit a bit of a dry patch. There is some really good talent in the freshmen class, along with the eighth grade and seventh grade classes. If they keep all of those kids in the program, they should be very successful in the next couple of years.

As for this year's game with Corbin, I would expect an easy Redhounds victory. Also, check your PM, 4chs.

  7. I've never been to Garrard County's field. Can someone help me out? I will take 27 from Stanford.

Follow U.S. 27 from Stanford into Lancaster. At the third stop light (Maple Avenue; a gas station is on the corner) turn left. Follow the road about 1/4 mile and the high school is on the right, across the street from the Church of Christ. Football field is in back of parking lot, although I'm sure you'll see the lights earlier.

  8. Does anyone have directions to Lafayette's stadium? Also, what radio station can the game be heard in Lexington?

From Danville, take Ky. Hwy. 34 into Garrard County. Turn north on U.S. 27 and follow all the way to Lexington. In Lexington, turn left on Southland Drive. Follow Southland for a couple miles, going past several lights and a church (on the right). Continue until Reed Lane and turn right. Lafayette will be right in front of you. There isn't a great deal of parking at Lafayette, however, so you might have to park on the street.

  9. I will say exactly what I said after I saw Pleasure Ridge Park defeat Lincoln County on opening night: They can't compete with St. Xavier and Male in R2D4. A team that can win that district (or Class AAAA for that matter), will always wow you with their play. By that I mean they will exhibit themselves to be head-and-shoulders above an inferior opponent. Pleasure Ridge Park didn't do that.

I think the Panthers could place third in that district race, but will fall early in the postseason to either Male or X, whoever finishes second.

  10. ;) Typically I wouldn't predict so heavily against Garrard, but they are so young this year and Mercer is loaded. Garrard will eventually be back to form imo but they'll take some lumps along the way.

Very fair prediction. Garrard is just so young this season and the schedule is really difficult. Not a lot of room to make mistakes and mature. Hopefully if there aren't a lot of field victories, we'll at least see some marked improvement over the year and be ready to tackle a new Class 3A district next season.

By the way, on the Garrard coach's radio program this morning, Coach Stonebraker ran down a tentative schedule for the Golden Lions next season:

    Week #

1: Estill County (Death Valley Bowl - Lincoln County High School)

    2: @Bardstown Bethlehem

    3: Jackson County

    4: @Somerset

5: Taylor County (Can't remember if this is home or away)

    6: Frankfort

7: Casey County (Not sure about site. Should be home, though)

    8: @Lincoln County

9: Wayne County (Again, not sure about site. Probably home)

    10 or 11: @Pendleton County

  11. That sounds better. Why not MAN UP and play 11 man though?

I think Beth Haven started playing 8-man on a regular basis last year. The new six-class alignment has them placed in a regular district, but I'm not sure if they will be playing or not. I think the level of success they have had at 8-man has brought more kids out for the team. There are only something like 50 boys in the entire school.

  12. What has happened to Garrad?

Limited talent at the high school right now. A really solid freshman class that was 9-2 as middle schoolers last season is now there, but they are much too young to contribute a great deal. I think there are only about five sophomores and five juniors. Just looks like this year and next could be really tough.

  13. Calling Kyfan11...

Paris is REALLY improved... Congrats to Coach Foley and the Panthers on this BLOW OUT. ;)

Paris is much improved. With that being said, Frankfort looks really solid. I'll eat a little crow as well. I didn't necessarily think Paris would win, but I didn't think they would get handled.

Frankfort looks solid. Where is the Frankfort/Danville game this season?

  14. This was extremely ugly. Up until the last drive by Garrard in which they completed a 30-yard pass, Garrard only had about five yards of total offense. Coach Stonebraker played mostly freshmen on defense and a great deal of offense. This is perhaps the worst Garrard team since 1987, when they finished 1-9.

With that said, Lincoln has a nice team. Look for a solid season in their Class AAAA district.

  15. Don't know if Casey has improved much from last year, but if not Marion should have no problem getting the W

Casey is supposed to have some good skill players this season (returnees from last year), but I'm not sure what their line situation is like. I think they looked good beating Grant County on opening night and then laid a big egg on the road at Russell County last week.

  16. I think Lincoln County should continue playing Danville and Boyle County despite the short term results. Those two teams have set the bar, locally (and statewide) and competing against them can only make you bette.

I proposed this same scenario to some Garrard Countians last week. I said we should play a home-and-home with Danville for two years, then Boyle the next two and then Rockcastle the two after that. You never have all three at once, which is really tough, but you do get a good area rivalry on your schedule at least once every season.

I'd much rather play one of them in place of either Paris, Frankfort or Grant County this season. Of course, when the schedule was made, all three of those games were possible "Ws," unlike a game with the Ads, Rebels or Rockets!

  17. Interestingly, Garrard County has never scored more than 22 points in a game vs. Lincoln and has never won by more than 14 points. There have been 5 shutouts, 4 by LC and 1 by GC. With the exception of 4 games (1982, 1986, 1987 and 2005), they have been fairly close, low scoring affairs.

Lincoln County has outscored Garrard County 361 to 219. If the game reflects the series averages, Lincoln County will win 17 to 10.

If three of those games in the 1980s hadn't been such blowouts, there likely would have never been a stop to the series. Garrard had some solid teams that could have competed (note: competed, not necessarily won) with those outstanding Patriot teams of the early 1990s.

I think most people in Lancaster would be happy with a 17-10 ballgame. Unfortunately that won't be the case. Garrard is really young and likely will play even younger kids this week. Also, with no kicking game, Garrard would have to have a touchdown, two-point conversion and safety to make it to 10!

Call it Lincoln County 34, Garrard County 6.

  18. I think Boyle could be looking at a 7-3 finish, with possible losses to Danville/Lafayette/Mercer County/Southwestern, although I wouldn't be on all four. While that is "down" for the Rebels, it most likely would be whole-heartedly accepted at 95% of the schools in Kentucky.

  19. The truth of the matter is that these two would draw no matter the opponent. I would question playing host and sending money back across the border when a double header featuring a couple of top Kentucky teams would be just as good and help build Kentucky high school football. I'm sure there is no shortage of fans that would like to see their team get a crack at Trinity or X in a season opener.

I agree. I was actually responding to an earlier post about playing Catholic schools from across the state line. I think a bowl like this would be really good, with Trinity and St. Xavier playing the likes of Warren Central, Bowling Green, Boyle, Lexington Catholic, Highlands, Covington Catholic, etc.

Basically, whoever is expecting a really solid club for the next couple seasons.
