It's pretty obvious that some people have their minds made up about Sphire and Lexington Catholic no matter what the facts are. Some have to go as far as trying to prove he couldn't coach because of his record at Knott Co. Did I miss something.........was Knott Co. a state power before he arrived? Has anyone ever walked into that job and been immediately successful? This year, Coach Sphire and his program had to beat in consecutive weeks: Covington Catholic, Highlands, Rockcastle Co., and Bowling Green. All are great established programs with excellent coaching staffs as well. Congratulations to Lexington Catholic's football program for a well deserved and hard fought State Championship. As far as past playoff losses, here's a few................lost to: Bourbon Co. (who won the state), lost to Danville (state runner up), lost to Boyle Co.--2 years in a row (state champ both years). These go back a few years, but even more so.............these were teams that were not slouches. If I'm not mistaken, in the two years that Boyle Co. beat Lexington Catholic, Boyle Co. won 2 regular season games and 2 playoff games by a total of 16 points for all 4 games (In 2000, Boyle Co. won both games by 2 points). They were hard fought games. The winner of those games was going to win state. It's a shame that people ("haters") want to cut down a successful coach, but they don't even know all the facts. Congrats to the Lexington Catholic players (the approx. 3 to 4 D-I players and the 90 or so other players) and staff that worked hard together to win state. Great job!
