  1. AP voters follow a very simple formula: defending champions don't get penalized for staying undefeated.

  12. I don't know, but they did it last year in the playoffs, and I don't think we had any 6'2" DBs.
  13. I think Ballard will beat Male, on the basis of talent, but I don't see Manual having any talent advantage over Male this season. In fact, I like Male's chances against Manual (no fumblerooskie required).
  14. I don't know if I'd say far ahead. I saw Trinity play Manual and X play Male. I think Manual is heavily overrated and they were able to run the ball on Trinity between the 20s. They made a ton of mistakes, otherwise the score would have been closer. St X will move the ball and score points on Trinity, especially if their backs are at full strength. This will shorten the game for them and reduce the number of possessions. I don't see X's defense giving up the easy, long TD's like Manual did, either. I'd say Trinity is a 2 TD favorite, which is not prohibitively far in my book.
  15. Sure, but the way you worded the question, that would be the case for any coach in 6A. Any 6A coach who could consistently compete with and win against X and T with a 40% smaller male enrollment and restricted attendance boundaries of course would be considered a superman. To make the question more interesting, do you think Coach Jackson will be able to pull that off? I say maybe, but a lot of coaches at Ballard have come close to knocking off X and T (Ballard very nearly spoiled the opening of St X's then-new stadium a few years back). Good luck, Coach.
  16. Declared by whom? An old, faded patch of dubious origin? Yeah, that keeps me awake at night . I'll settle for the most widely-cited rating system in the pre-playoff era, the Litkenhous Ratings. You'll notice that someone else brought the Lit champions into this thread--that's how ubiquitous they are regarding pre-1959 football in this state. I'll bet no one can even produce the list of North-South Bowl winners over the years.
  17. The 1943 Courier-Journal newspaper clipping I have states that going into the Male/Manual game, the two teams were 1-2 in Kentucky in the Litkenhous ratings, which at that time were also run and published for high school football in several neighboring states (like the Massey ratings are today). So, in effect, that game was a post season game (it was just as much post season as the North-South bowl, as both games were played on Thanksgiving Day) and that year was a matchup of #1 vs #2. Male won convincingly, 26-7 before a packed house at Manual Stadium. That's fine, I just find the debate entertaining.
  18. Mr. Litkenhous said the Bulldogs were the best team in the state that year and no in-state (or out-of-state) team came close to proving him wrong, so that's good enough for me. By the way, over the years did anyone ever even take the time to write down the winners of the NIT bowl, I mean the North-South bowl?
  19. Sure, Mayfield (3rd winningest program in the state 1919-2009), Danville (5th winningest program in the state 1924-2009), and St X (6th winningest program in the state 1917-2009) could have ALL had terrible years in 1943 (when Male drilled them 41-0, 46-0, and 19-0, respectively). I'm sure THAT explains how Highlands deserves the 1943 state championship with a loss.
  20. Male didn't play Ashland that year, but Manual did and tied the Tomcats. Riddle me this: If Dayton was a powerhouse back in the day and they beat Highlands, why wasn't Dayton in the North-South bowl instead of the Bluebirds?
  21. Sure, but Male didn't play in a no-name conference. The schedule they played was more like the SEC. Anybody know who Highlands played in 1943?
  22. Well, I have a $3 bill, but that doesn't mean it's worth anything! Since no one has mentioned it, Highlands had a loss in 1943 (to a Northern Ky team, I think). And Ashland had a tie with Manual, so I have a really hard time understanding how these two teams could have legitimately been considered 1-2 when there was a team with an unblemished record and impressive wins over Danville, St X, Mayfield, and teams from Tennessee, Illinois, and Indiana.
