2nd and Goal

It was a very physical championship game in Madisonville last night. Both teams defended well in the first half and both were aided by the fact that only 2 fouls were called in the first 16 minutes. Henderson was in control early but Madisonville made some impressive defensive stops and put the game within striking distance trailing 17-14 at half. In the second half, however, the story became the defense of the Colonels. Henderson County created multiple turnovers that led to offense on the other end. After leading 28-21 at the end of the 3rd, the Colonels controlled the tempo and the game the rest of the way. Henderson County made 13-16 FT in the final minutes as the Maroons had to foul to play catch up. Henderson County was led in scoring by senior Cooper Davenport with 14 points, and sophomore point guard Xavion Johnson with 13 points. Starters Dwaine Moss, Elijah Suggs and Lacon McKinney chipped in 9,8 and 6 respectively. Madisonville's Ryan Bryant led the Maroons with 9 points and Kanyon Johnson added 8.

Down by 6 late in the game, Henderson County's Amare Stewart and Cooper Davenport hit back-to-back 3's to pull the game to even. In OT, the Colonels got another big 3 from Stewart to stretch their 1 point lead to 4. From there the Colonels hung on for the win. This one was an absolute thriller of a game to watch. Lyon County pulled 19 offensive rebounds in the game but the Colonels overcame that by shooting 10-21 from 3.

Floor general Kanyon Johnson and sharpshooting Landen Smith carried the Maroons to semifinal victory over Union County.

The 2nd Region Tournament will be played at Madisonville North Hopkins High School. First round dates are 3/5 and 3/6 with the semifinal on 3/11 and the championship on 3/18. First Round Matchups Madisonville (15-12) vs. Livingston Central (9-20): These two teams did not face each other during the regular season. Madisonville has a trio of double digit scorers in Landon Smith (15.5), Kanyon Johnson (15.9), and Ryan Bryant (11.5) that make them a difficult matchup on the offensive end. Johnson, a 6'4 point guard who recently made SportsCenter's top 10 plays with his 360 dunk as time expired in the 7th district championship, makes the Maroons' offense go. However, the athleticism and defensive abilities of starters Trashaun Smith and Davin Cheirs may propel Madisonville to a 2nd Region title. Livingston Central's Logan Wring averages 24.1 ppg, while Bryson Walker averages 16.1. For the Cardinals to have a shot in this one, they will have to limit their turnovers and knock down 3's. I expect Madisonville's athleticism will carry the day and move the Maroons to the semis. Christian County (8-22) vs. Union County (15-10): This is the most interesting first round matchup and another game where the teams did not meet in the regular season. Head Coach Dior Curtis played the long game with his squad this season and was rewarded with an 8th District Championship. Playing a very tough schedule, the young Colonels took their fair share of bumps and bruises along the way. However, Christian County seems to be playing its best basketball at the right time. Led senior NDarien Rowe (12.3) the Colonels rely on stingy defense, transition offense, and a relentless pursuit of second shots to win ball games. Union County is the worst first round matchup for the Colonels, however. The Braves are strong, athletic and fast. Additionally, their mix of zone defenses will likely give Christian County problems scoring. Led by 6'2 junior point guard Daishawn Curry, Union County is the most efficient offense in the region at 52.9% from the field and they have the size and strength to matchup well with the Colonels. I expect Union County to win this one and move on to face Madisonville in the semis. Henderson County (22-6) vs. Hopkinsville (15-15): The Colonels from Henderson County won the regular season matchup between these two teams back in December, 83-56. The Colonels have won 8 of their last 9 games including wins over Warren Central and Bowling Green. The Colonels are led by a trio of double figure scorers including Cooper Davenport (13.7), Lacon McKinney (11.4), and Elijah Suggs (11.4). Additionally, the Colonels benefit from x-factor senior Dwaine Moss (8.8) who can stretch the floor and take some attention off Davenport, as well as the emergence of steady sophomore point guard Xavion Johnson (7.2). Hopkinsville has a big 3 of their own in James Bradley (15.5), Jonathan Hart (12.4), and Jonovan Leavell (12.3). The Tigers matchup well with the Colonels in every statistical category and have enough size in sophomore Layton Giltner to compete in the paint. However, the experience of Henderson County has shown up so far this season in their ability to win against tough competition, as the Tigers have struggled to close the deal against the best teams on their schedule. I expect this to be a good first round matchup and I have Henderson County coming out on top to move on to the semis. Lyon County (24-7) vs. Dawson Springs (17-15): Lyon County won the regular season matchup between these two teams just over three weeks ago in a 107-65 win at home. The Lions are the defending state champs and have put together an impressive season after losing three Division 1 players, including Mr. Basketball Travis Perry. The Lions have finished their season strong, winning 8 of their last 9 games, including wins over Owenboro and Madisonville. The Lions boast 4 players averaging double figures led by Bray Kirk's 22.5 points per game. Additionally, Nolan Coffman (17.5), Cooper Collins (11.1), and Isaac Defew (10.4) pitch in to an offensive attack that is top 10 in the state in points per game. The Panthers are led by Region 2 Player of the Year Rex Blue who averages 20.2 PPG and 10.1 RPG. Additionally, the point guard play of the All-Time leading Panther scorer Montgomer Johnson (23.0) creates a tough one-two punch for Dawson Springs. However, based on the regular season outcome and the drama surrounding the resignation of 2nd Region Coach of the Year Mickey Blue, I think there is just too much for Dawson Springs to overcome. I expect Lyon County to roll in this one.

Week in Review: Henderson County finished the regular season with impressive home wins over Bowling Green and Owensboro. Lyon County earned a nice road win over Paducah Tilghman before dropping their final regular season game at St. Mary on Friday. Madisonville finished their regular season with a home loss to Owensboro Catholic. Union County scored a good win over Dawson Springs at home before falling to Apollo on the road. 1. Campbell (3-24) 16. Crittenden County (0-25) District Previews: 5th District at Trigg County, Tuesday 2/25: Lyon County v. Crittenden County: Lyon County will win this one. Livingston Central vs. Trigg County: The teams have split their regular season matchup and both have struggled to finish games down the stretch. I would give the edge to the home team Trigg County in this one but it is certainly a toss-up. Championship Game Friday 2/28: I expect Lyon County to roll in this one as well as they have dominated the 5th district for quite a while. They just have too much firepower for either Trigg County or Livingston. 6th District at Union County, Monday 2/24: Union County v. Webster County: These teams split in the regular season and both teams were short-handed in their losses. Webster County is much improved since the return of their lead guard Reid McDyer and has shot the ball very well from 3 late in the season. In their 2nd game with Union, the Trojans shot 15/24 from the 3-point line. I doubt they can replicate that effort tonight but they will need to make 8 plus to have a chance in this one. Union County was missing backup guard and defensive specialist Gavyn Black in their 2nd game against Webster. The Braves have a significant advantage over Webster County in size and athleticism. I expect the Braves to tighten up their perimeter defense and pound it inside tonight to come away with a win. The winner will meet Henderson County on Wednesday in the 6th District Championship. I expect Henderson to win this district however Union County has played them well in the regular season so I would expect it to be an excellent game. 7th District at Caldwell County, Monday 2/24 Madisonville vs. Hopkins County Central: Madisonville won both regular season matchups and seemed to solve the Storm's "Diamond and 1" defense in their second matchup. As additional perimeter shooters have emerged for the Maroons during the season, it has made Coach Burgett's game plan a little trickier to execute. Ultimately, I think Madisonville has too much athleticism and firepower for Hopkins Central to overcome. Caldwell County vs. Dawson Springs: This is the best game of the night in the 2nd Region. I expect this one to come down to a couple of possessions. Caldwell County has won both regular season matchups and seems to have the Panther's number as you would have to go back to December of 2022 for the last time Dawson Springs defeated Caldwell. However, 2nd Region Coach of the Year Mickey Blue and 2nd Region Player of the Year Rex Blue may have something up their sleeve for tonight's matchup. This will be an interesting game for the rest of the region to watch as both teams provide a tough first-round matchup for anyone in the region. My prediction is that Caldwell will survive and advance on their home court. Championship Game, Thursday 2/27: I would expect Madisonville to continue its streak of 7th District Championships, which dates back to 2010, but it will not be easy for the Maroons regardless of the outcome of the Caldwell County vs. Dawson Springs matchup. 8th District Tournament at Hopkinsville, Monday 2/24 Fort Campbell vs. Heritage Christian: Heritage Christian won both regular season matchups and I would expect them to prevail here behind the firepower of Jason Leek and his 34.5 points per game. Tuesday 2/25 University Heights vs. Christian County: UHA won the lone regular season matchup of these two teams behind 50 combined points from Tylin George and Elijah Walton. With a healthy KeShawn Moore back for the Blazers, I expect University Heights to have too many offensive weapons for the Colonels. Hopkinsville vs. TBA: Regardless of the winner on Monday, I would expect the Tigers to roll into the championship game. Championship Game Friday 2/28: I am predicting the size and strength of Hopkinsville and their improved defense to carry the day and lead them to an 8th District Championship. However, as this year has proven, anything can happen in this version of the 8th District.

Week in Review: The most notable game of this week was Lyon County's win in the battle of #2 vs. #3 with an 89-71 home win over Madisonville on Thursday of last week. The Lion's win shows just how "up for grabs" the 2nd Region title will be this year. So far this season, Madisonville took down Henderson County, the Colonels defeated Lyon County and the Lions bested Madisonville. Not to mention that there are plenty of teams including Union County, Dawson Springs, Caldwell County, and anyone out of the 8th District that could play a spoiler role at tournament time. Henderson County's loss to Louisville Trinity makes sense with the absence of two starters. The Colonels will look to get healthy in this final week of the season before they await the winner of Union County and Webster County for the 6th District Championship. Hopkinsville still holds a slight advantage over UHA in the RPI, maintaining the 1 seed tiebreak in the 8th District. Hopkinsville plays Russellville tonight while UHA faces Todd County Central. If both win, I'd guess Hopkinsville will retain their advantage. However, if the Tigers were to lose tonight, I'd guess that UHA would move ahead of the Tigers, earn the 1 seed and make the regional tournament. That assumes of course that the winter weather on the way prevents both teams from playing the rest of the week. 1. Henderson County (19-6): A shorthanded Colonels team played without 2 starters this week in each contest. They defeated Hopkins Central at home before falling on the road at Louisville Trinity. 2. Lyon County (21-6): The Lions are rolling right now with 4 wins last week including their statement win over Madisonville. 3. Madisonville North Hopkins (13-11): The Maroons lost two tough ones this week to Butler County at home and Lyon County on the road. 4. Union County (12-8): The Braves defeated Livingston Central 71-69 at home but had to play without lead guard Daishawn Curry (17 ppg) who suffered an injury the previous week at Henderson County. He is the engine that makes the Braves go. Union County will need him healthy to put together a tournament run. 5. Caldwell County (16-9): The Tigers won convincingly over Trigg County and Crittenden County putting up 90 points plus in each contest. If the Tigers shoot the ball as well as they have recently (10-24 from 3 vs. Trigg County) coupled with the post presence of JayDarius Wilson, they are a tough out for anyone. 6. Dawson Springs (15-12): The Panthers got a good win over Livingston Central to bounce back from losses to McLean County and Lyon County. 7. Hopkinsville (12-14): The Tigers lost to Paducah Tilghman at home 82-75 before bouncing back with an overtime win against Hopkins County Central. 8. UHA (8-11): The Blazers seem to be playing much better basketball with the return of sophomore guard KeShawn Moore. They have now won 4 in a row. 9. Christian County (5-20): The Colonels have not played since February 7th. 10. Webster County (10-15): The Trojans defeated Trigg County and Crittenden County and seem to be trending in the right direction as they approach a 6th District first-round showdown with Union County. Week in Review: Henderson County won the head-to-head matchup against the region's #1 ranked Lyon County Lions in a 59-38 victory at Colonel Gym. The 38-point performance was the lowest of the season so far for Lyon County. Henderson County finished the week strong with a district road win against a much improved Webster County team and a win over Union County. Lyon County bounced back from losing to the Colonels with a nice win over Owensboro. Madisonville, made a statement last week beating Henderson County. This week, the Maroons lost at home to Warren Central before beating Caldwell County on the road Friday. Another game of note from last week, the UHA Blazers made a statement by defeating Christian County and creating a 3-way tie for the 8th District's #1 seed as the 8th District only counts the team's first matchup for district tournament seeding. The tie-breaker in the 8th will come down to RPI which currently gives the advantage to Hopkinsville but only by a slight margin. 1. Henderson County (19-5): Henderson will have a tough road test this Saturday taking on Louisville Trinity. 2. Lyon County (18-6): The Lions will play 3 games in a row this week against Madisonville, Murray and Trigg County. 3. Madisonville North Hopkins (13-10): The Maroons go on the road to Lyon County on Thursday before a tough out-of-region game at Caverna on Saturday. 4. Union County (12-8): The Braves take on Livingston Central at home tonight before facing a tough St. Mary's team on the road Saturday. 5. Caldwell County (15-9): The Tigers face Crittenden County at home tonight before taking on South Warren at the Hebrew's Classic on Saturday. 6. Dawson Springs (14-11): The Panthers will look to bounce back after dropping two consecutive games last week with road games at McLean County and Livingston Central. 7. Hopkinsville (11-13): The Tigers take on Paducah Tilghman, Hopkins Central and McCracken County this week. If the Tigers can go 2-1 on the week, that will certainly go a long way in helping them to solidify the top RPI in the 8th District. 8. UHA (7-11): The Blazers will likely extend their winning streak to 5 games by the end of the week as they take on Heritage Christian and Todd County Central. I'll be interested to see what those potential wins do for the Blazers's RPI going into the last week of the season. 9. Christian County (5-20): The Colonels have a break in their schedule this week but will host Bardstown on Saturday. 10. Webster County (8-15): The Trojans play Trigg County and Crittenden County this week. 11. Hopkins County Central (10-14) 12. Livingston Central (8-15) 13. Heritage Christian (9-16) 14. Week in Review: It was a wild week in the 2nd Region as multiple upsets occurred. The region tournament just got very interesting as Madisonville knocked off the region's top team on Friday, defeating Henderson County 45-42. What makes that win even more interesting is factoring in Madisonville's loss on Tuesday at Dawson Springs, the first time in over 57 consecutive games that the Panthers have beaten the Maroons. Maybe even more wild is that Henderson County responded to the loss at Madisonville less than 24 hours later with a road win over the KSR's #6 team in the state, Warren Central. Another surprising score this week came from the 6th district. Union County defeated Webster by 40 points in their first meeting, only to lose at home on Friday to the Trojans 72-65. This result makes it possible for Henderson County to claim the 1 seed and the 6th district bye to the region tournament with a win against either Webster or Union this week. There will be a shake-up in this week's rankings, and I'm excited to see how some of this week's head-to-head matchups play out. 1. Lyon County (16-5): With Henderson County and Madisonville both taking losses last week, Lyon County moves into the region's top spot this week. They have done the job in 2025 and look to be the region's most consistent team. I expect the matchup between them and the Colonels from Henderson County tonight to be the game of the week in Region 2. 2. Henderson County(15-5): The Colonels hold on to the 2nd spot, but barely. Their win over Warren Central helped offset the loss to Madisonville North Hopkins. I expect an electric atmosphere in Henderson tonight as the Colonels host the Lions. 3. Madisonville North Hopkins (12-8): After a loss to Dawson Springs, the Maroons responded in impressive fashion taking down Henderson County. The Maroons looked to have quickly shored up some of their weaknesses and used their size and length to give Henderson County a hard time scoring. 4. Dawson Springs (13-9): The Panthers are on a 5-game winning streak and their impressive win over Madisonville propels them up the rankings a full 5 spots this week. Dawson Springs showed this week that they have the potential to knock off the region's traditional powers on a given night. 5. Union County(11-7): The Braves continue to be up and down. They are as dangerous as any team but their inability to win a critical district matchup against Webster on Friday knocks them down a couple of spots. 6. Caldwell County (14-8): The Tigers stay steady at 6 after going 2-1 on the week. Their game against Madisonville this Friday will be one to watch as they have the chance to tie Madisonville at 4-2 in district play with a win. 7. Hopkinsville (8-13): The Tiger's lone game this week resulted in a loss to Daviess County on the road, but the Tigers still look like the most dangerous team in the 8th district. 8. Christian County (5-18): The Colonel's record doesn't reflect how dangerous they could be in post-season play. The schedule they have played is as tough or maybe the toughest in Region 2. 9. UHA (4-11): The Blazers took a lopsided home loss to Bowling Green last week. Their matchup with Christian County was canceled. The Blazers are in the top 10 because Tylin George can single-handedly keep them competitive in most in-region games. 10. Webster County (7-13): The Trojan's win at Union County propels them into this week's top 10. 11. Hopkins County Central (7-12) 12. Livingston Central (6-14) 13. Heritage Christian (6-15) 14. Henderson County picks up a good road win after dropping one to Madisonville last night.

I thought it was a good win too, then I see the Indy Star has Reitz ranked #9 this week in Indiana. Better win than I realized.

I'm hearing that most of Coach Boston's previous staff are pursuing coaching positions at other schools which suggests they may not be strong candidates for the Henderson County job.

I’d be interested to know the last time that Dawson Springs beat Madisonville. This is a big win for the Panthers!

Week in Review: Lyon County ran its win streak to 9 in a row and reached the finals of the All-A State Tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter yesterday before falling in the championship to Danville Christian. The Lions dug themselves an early hole in yesterday's contest with turnovers and foul trouble trailing 14 at halftime. Lyon County's full-court pressure and hot shooting from Cooper Collins led to an impressive second-half comeback. DCA made just enough plays to hold on for the victory. Henderson County began the 6th district play this week with a lopsided win over Webster County and a 10-point road win over Union County. Other notable games from this week were Madisonville's 15-point home loss to Muhlenberg County and Hopkinsville's 2-0 week with a nice district win over Christian County on Friday to muddy up the waters in the 8th district. 1. Henderson County (13-4): The Colonels will be tested this week with a home game against Evansville Reitz before going on the road to face Madisonville and Warren Central. 2. Lyon County (14-5): The Lions will look to stay undefeated in the 2nd region this week as they take on Livingston Central and Hopkinsville. 3. Union County (10-6): The Braves move up to #3 this week and will take on Eldorado, IL, Webster County and Harrisburg, IL. 4. Madisonville (10-7): The Maroons drop a spot in this week's rankings. They will take on district opponents Caldwell County and Dawson Springs before finishing their week with Henderson County at home. 5. Hopkinsville (8-12): Hopkinsville moves up a spot this week as well. The Tigers have a tough week ahead as they take on Lyon County and Daviess County on the road. 6. Caldwell County (12-7): Caldwell County will try to knock off Madisonville tonight before taking on Crittenden County and Trigg County to finish out their week. 7. Christian County (4-16): Christian County will look to end a 4-game losing streak tonight at Ft. Campbell before taking on Warren Central, UHA, and St. Mary this week. 8. UHA (4-10): The Blazers have had an extended layoff. We will see if it has helped them regroup and get healthy as they will be best tested by Bowling Green, Christian County, and McCracken County this week. 9. Dawson Springs (10-9): The Panthers will play in the district this week against Madisonville and Hopkins County Central. They finish their week hosting Heritage Christian. 10. Henderson County's winning streak ended at 6 after falling to Evansville Memorial on the road Saturday. Madisonville moved to 3-0 in the 7th District setting up a showdown next week between them and Caldwell County for the top spot in the district. 1. Henderson County (11-4): The Colonels remain at #1 despite going 2-1 last week. The Colonels defeated Christian County and Muhlenberg County on the road before falling to Evansville Memorial. Cooper Davenport averaged over 15 points per game on the week while Lacon McKinney averaged 13 and Elijah Suggs 10. 2. Lyon County (11-4): The Lions are on a hot streak right now, capped off with a big road win last night against Graves County. The duo of Bray Kirk (22 ppg) and Nolan Coffman (18ppg) have Lyon County 2nd in Kentucky in team scoring. 3. Madisonville (10-6): Going 2-1 on the week, the Maroon's picked up district wins over Dawson Springs and Hopkins Central. Their only loss came to Taylor County at home. The senior trio of Kanyon Johnson (16 ppg), Landen Smith (14 ppg), and Ryan Bryant (11 ppg) lead the Maroons. 4. Union County (6-4): The Braves went 2-1 on the week with lopsided wins over Livingston Central and Webster County before falling to McLean County on the road. The Braves boast 4 double-figure scorers on the season with Daishawn Curry (19 ppg) leading the way. 5. Week in Review: Little basketball was played across the state this week however the southern parts of the 2nd Region were spared from the winter weather and could sneak in some critical games. Lyon County picked up 2 wins including an All-A semifinal victory over UHA. Caldwell County picked up their 2nd win of the season over Dawson Springs and will meet Lyon County in the All-A finals this Tuesday. Last week, the other game of note was Christian County's road win over 8th District rival Hopkinsville 73-69 on Friday. Senior NaDarian Rowe and Sophomore Rasean Stevenson, who have become a potent 1-2 punch for the Colonels, had 29 and 18 points respectively in the winning effort. 1. Henderson County (9-3): 2. WSON radio out of Henderson is reporting Coach Josh Boston has resigned after 9 seasons as head coach of the Colonels.

Henderson County (9-3): Colonels are on a 4 game winning streak that includes an impressive win over Evansville Harrison and a lopsided victory over Bullitt East. 2.
