  1. I have several big oak trees in the side yard and all of them would have scored much higher than did the Obamaites. But, then, that should surprise no one. By the way, the oak trees are self supporting and need no handouts.
  2. Rose Hill started three freshmen, one sophomore, and one senior. They will be fine with some experience. Uncle Jed is certainly correct that Mike Terry was the best player on the floor in the first game. It is nice to hear ZoneBuster23, a true Ashland partisan, call Terry "the real deal". The last time I heard that term in regard to a Rose Hiller was when it was said about Mayo. Of course, Terry is not remotely on the level of the now millionaire Mayo but, then, no one around here ever was at that level. All in all, if anyone from the 64th District attends the state tournament, it will certainly be as a spectator.
  3. The decision to take or not take communion is really, with very few exceptions, up to the individual. Each must decide the state of his/her condition himself/herself. And, each will, hopefully, be held accountable for those decisions. Nonetheless, the priest was sending a message and I think the message needs to be sent on a regular basis. He was, I believe, calling out "Cafeteria Catholics" (by the way, all groups have a long line of cafeteria members). If you don't believe in and adher to the teachings of your particular church, why do you bother to attend other than to be seen?
  4. Slow down. You are spinning so hard we are all getting dizzy.
  5. How did it go at Lexington Catholic? It wouldn't be reasonable to expect a win since it was so close after the Highlands game the night before. Ashland probably didn't have Skaggs or Bonner.
  6. I don't think the priest was wrong at all. Obviously, he is not aware of how those walking down the aisle for communion voted so he wasn't going to withhold communion from anyone. I believe he was sending a message that each should examine his/her situation. I believe we need a little more of that.
  7. I would rather educate TBandG than to entertain him/her. That would be my judgment (note spelling).
  8. Well, since the only one who could have acted, the governor, did not do so, I suppose that he shouldn't receive communion in a Catholic Church. Of course, I believe the governor is a Baptist so it isn't likely to be an issue. I'll leave any disciplinary action to our friends in the Baptist Church. There is absolutely no relationship between the two. I would have given TBandG a little more credit than that. But, I guess I would be wrong. Anyone associating the rampant slaughter of innocent babies with the execution of a confessed, convicted murderer who received due process of law over and over again is not reasonable.
  9. Obama's words and behavior would lead one to conclude that he is, in the most favorable light, a "Cafeteria Christian" in that he will pick a church just as he picked a school for his daughters (private, by the way). It has less to do with deep beliefs than with appearance and convenience (remember the school chosen, Sidwell Friends, is actually a Quaker school by tradition but it is prestigious, exclusive, safe, and expensive). People can draw whatever conclusions from all this that they so choose. I would not expect that we will see him draw on his deep Christian spiritual beliefs in a time of crisis.
  10. Actually, I believe that Christians believe in the Holy Trinity. As the hymn says, "God in three persons- Blessed Trinity" (ie: Father, Son, Holy Spirit). Obama seems to see the second person of the Holy Trinity as merely a go between or conduit to the first person.
  11. It is traditional to show a new president-elect leaving church after attending services. I haven't noticed any footage on this one. Have I missede something?
  12. And you would prefer that we bail them out and that the result is to merely delay in Chapter 7 through a bailout (which will end up as a gift and not a loan)? If this is the case, all those suppliers you mention will get nothing. At least, under Chapter 11, they stand a chance of getting some payment. The truth is, as hard as it is to accept, that the auto makers need to get rid of (or at least revise downward) those unconscionable contracts they have made with the union. The bailout may help the union people (workers, nonworkers, and retirees) for a while but it won't last. Bankruptcy will still be the end result so why not opt for the guarded hope of Chapter 11 than end up with Chapter 7 liquidation.
  13. No program in the Commonwealth, other than Trinity and St. Xavier, has remotely the tradition for success that Highlands has earned through the years. Ashland has done much better than expected this year, They have overachieved. However, to expect them to win against Highlands particularly away from Putnam Stadium, is a pipe dream. Nonetheless, Ashland fans really do see the world of high school sports through maroon glasses so, as they would say, play the game and see what happens. For me, I'm hoping for a Class 6A title match between T and X. That is big time football.
  14. The Hall of Fame needs to be a little more selective. We have enough pitchers like Jenkins, Hunter, Drysdale, Gomez, Newhouser, Lemon, etc. who water down the Hall. Mussina doesn't belong in the Hall with Young, Johnson, Mathewson, Alexander, Spahn, etc and neither do a lot of those already there. We shouldn't cheapen it like we have so many of our other institutions. If Mussina wants in, let him win 300 games. Otherwise, no.
  15. This may be off subject but there are some fine bumperstickers and teeshirts for sale on ebay under "anti obama". As for his stance on social issues, some of those items on ebay describe what those with traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs face quite well.
  16. It may or may not absolve the company from paying pensions. However, one thing is certain, it isn't good for the retirees. On the other hand, it may well be a good step toward saving the company. Obviously, if the company goes out of business, those pensions won't be paid and, in addition, the present workers are out of a job. Do you sacrifice some or all? I know it sounds hardhearted but that is the reality of it.
  17. Absolutely and without any hesitation. Under the circumstances, the chances of getting a bad product are less if they are under the scrutiny of their creditors and the court. Buying shares of stock would be more risky but, at the present prices, it may well be a good longterm investment.
  18. Although we all have compassion for them and their families, I would think that a successful reorganization for the auto companies would require the employees to take a cut in pay/benefits. If we are honest, we must admit that the companies are as they are as much because of excesses to employees as to excesses to management. It works both ways. Need an example? AK Steel in Ashland is going to be "idled" for a while. The newspaper interviewed a wife of one of the employees who stated that, with subpay and unemployment, her husband would be bringing home $500.00 per week. She said that it would be difficult for them because that means that his take home pay each month would be about what he brought home each week when working. Figure it for yourself. That, even using a 28 day (4 week) month translates to take home pay of $104,000 per year (these are her figures-not mine). With benefits added in, I am surprised that AK hasn't been forced to "idle" long ago.
  19. The country would, on the whole, be better served if the automobile companies and others with similar financial problems filed for protection under the Bankruptcy Code. Obviously, these companies would file what is known as Chapter 11 (Reorganization). They would not go out of business as many seem to believe. However, bankruptcy would allow the companies to reorganize and, hopefully, become profitable. A creditors's committee would help oversee the process. It could, and should, allow for such needed changes as trimming of the excess fat- both in management and in the unionized labor force- and increased productivity and quality. Some years ago it worked for Walt Disney (as it has through the years for many others) and it can work for these companies. Of course, if the problems cannot be worked out through this approach, they probably need to lock the doors and move on. We need responsibility instead of bailouts.
  20. I'm glad you appreciate directness. Too few do in this age of censorship conveniently coined as "political correctness". Even in this era, truth is truth.
  21. So you insist on a direct answer. I oppose racist remarks regardless of which group uses them. A close review of reality indicates to me that racism is used by both Caucasians and non-Caucasians at a similar pace. Obama and his supporters used it quite effectively in the recently completed election by inferring that any attack against Obama was racism. It worked. Yosemite Sam was completely intimidated. All he could do was give that silly grin and say, "My friends".
  22. I am saying it is a reality of life just is are all forms of prejudice. Racial prejudice is no better and no worse than any other kind. But, if you think we will ever have a prejudice-free world, you are only fooling yourself. Unfortunately, some forms of prejudice (anti-Christian, for example) are completely overlooked in our society (political correctness) while others are treated, shall we say, more severely. If we are to denounce racism, we need to do it from both directions since such acts are not peculiar to one racial group.
  23. I second the comments of cch5432. Absolutes are absolutes. If you prefer a church that, like too many of our mainline groups, changes its beliefs to suit the times (and to bring in the crowds), the Catholic Church isn't for you. Of course, if you do prefer the "Church of What's Happening Now", you would be just as well off going to a local sports bar instead. As for me, I'll stay where I am.
