Behymer was not a middle school PE teacher.  He is an elementary gym teacher.  The middle school position is open from retirement of a teacher.

Middle school PE teacher...elementary gym, sounds like I was close but no cigar. My point still stands.

If that is the case then why are those positions “mysteriously” being given to coaches that Coach Sphire asked to come with him. For example, his son filling the middle school PE opening.

As happy as I am that Coach Sphire is the coach at HHS and think it is a better hire than Coach James... we need to be real clear here and admit that the only thing that was keeping Coach James from being the next coach at HHS was Coach James. Period.

Who said anything about "mysteriously"? Almost two months have passed between James heading back to Franklin County and now. Is it possible that some of the former HHS football staff members have found gainful employ elsewhere when they got jobs elsewhere? Pretty sure the coach who went to Newport was a middle school PE teacher. No idea if he's headed for a Newport day job or not, but is it completely out of the realm of possibility that his job, or some other jobs have opened up in two months time? Or is is entirely impossible that HHS realized "Oh crap, we screwed up there" and decided when they hired the next guy, they would make for damn sure that they could manufacture teaching jobs for some necessary football staff members to start working in their schools? I mean, all of this talk about "they're trying to dig up money for Wolfe" in January, could they have possibly dug up some money to at least try to catch a Wolfe by offering some teaching jobs available to his staffers? And is it possible that perhaps after they struck out with Wolfe, they still decided to offer those jobs to the staffers for the next man up?

    Situations change, Kenny.

I don't mean to talk crazy or anything here...but momma always told me an intelligent person tries to learn from their mistakes. Would a wise person not try to handle things differently after they realize they've screwed up?

That is 100% not why Eddie James backed out of coming to Highlands. I know for a fact that Highlands did not insist that any coach be kept; I heard that straight from the horses mouth. It was made very clear to all of the coaches from the former staff that they would have to reapply and be interviewed by whoever the new coach would be. This exact process is actually going on right now as I know coaches from the former staff have, or are in the process of, applying and I also know of coaches who were not on the previous staff who have applied and hope to interview with Coach Sphire. HHS was at zero fault for Eddie James backing out. Don't get it twisted and try to make HHS look like they bad guy.

Also, if what everyone says about Coach Sphire is true, I think he is going to hire whoever he wants to coach and if people don't like it, so be it.

My understanding is that Highlands did have a 'lil something to do with it. Promised some school district positions to be available for James' wife and an assistant or two and then walked back on their promise.

I was already looking that up when you asked. I only went back as the KHSAA scoreboard has documented...didn't go digging for his 3 years as head coach at Knott Central or 91-97 at Lex Cath.

He is 29-25 in the last 5 years, and 78-40 in the last 10 years.

    2020 Camden County 5-6
    2019 Camden County 8-3
    2018 Camden County 7-4
    2017 Camden County 3-7
    2016 North Gwinnett 6-5
    2015 North Gwinnett 5-5
    2014 North Gwinnett 9-3
2013 North Gwinnett 13-3 (State Finalist)
    2012 North Gwinnett 11-2
    2011 North Gwinnett 11-2
    2010 North Gwinnett 12-2
    2009 North Gwinnett 12-1
    2008 North Gwinnett 10-3
2007 North Gwinnett 13-3 (State Finalist)
    2006 North Gwinnett 11-2
    2005 Lexington Catholic 14-1 (3A State Champions)
    2004 Lexington Catholic 10-2
    2003 Lexington Catholic 7-5
    2002 Lexington Catholic 4-9 (7 forfeit losses)
    2001 Lexington Catholic 2-7 (10 forfeit losses)
    2000 Lexington Catholic 11-2
    1999 Lexington Catholic 11-2
    1999 Lexington Catholic 12-1

So what I'm reading here is that Highlands hired a coach who is very possibly in the sunset of his career from out of his worst coaching stretch in his last 20 years as head coach.

How do you justify this?  All head coaches of boys and girls sports are working 52 weeks a year for their programs.  The big three sports should be pretty equal IMO.  So HHS is going to pay the running back coach or defensive line coach more than the head baseball coach?

    Head Football Coach:  $16,000

    Head Basketball Coach:  $8276

    Head Baseball Coach:  $4966

    Five assistant football coaches:  $6698

A great business at a fair price is superior to a fair business at a great price.

HHS football can be a great business. They've had coaches from multiple states and both the college & HS football apply. If you're expecting someone to pick up and move their family from out of state for a job where they may be given the boot in 2 or 3 yrs if they don't succeed, you better be offering them a fair price to do so. I call $16K fair for that. I'm confident all my HHS friends think $16K is fair for that, and they're the ones footing the bill.

Listerman is obviously a fine coach, but the expectations of basketball are not the same as football at Highlands. Just look at Listerman's record from his first few years. That's why he's not making the same as the football coach. And were they searching HS & college coaches in multiple states when they looked for new coaches to hire for the hoops and baseball team like they are for the football team? I have my doubts.

Also like somebody said already the Oline coach is responsible for coaching roughly the same number of players as the basketball and baseball coaches. Say what you will about responsibilities beyond that, but I think an assistant football coach has a lot more going on than an assistant for most other sports programs.

    2016-17: Trinity 70-60
    2015-16: Trinity 74-72 (OT)
    2014-15: Trinity 60-49
    2007-08: Cov Cath 53-49
    2001-02: Cov Cath 65-59
    1991-92: Cov Cath 66-63
    1974-75: Trinity 80-74
    1973-74: Cov Cath 57-54
    1961-62: Cov Cath 47-46
    1960-61: Cov Cath 69-58

The game in 1960-61 was the first time they played each other. I'm missing some seasons in there, because for some dumb reason, folks didn't think it was worth mentioning game results (or even team records) in a bunch of yearbooks. That, or they decided to only put the district playing schedule in the yearbook. Seasons missing: 1977-78, 1980-81, 1981-82, 1983-84, 1984-85, 1985-86.

So as close as I can get, for now...the series record is at 6-4 in Cov Cath's favor.

I don't think they played each other in the 80's. Could be wrong but I don't think so.

In all seriousness, I will say that I'm intrigued by the question about Catholic schools. Well, I guess I should probably say that I'm intrigued about the Diocese of Covington schools, in particular. It was Bishop Foys who put the current rule in place that established the moratorium on school sports during Holy Week. No practice, and no games. I remember hearing him say that he was "appalled" when he learned that his predecessors had permitted school sports during Holy Week.

As far as I know, the rule has been pretty strictly enforced. Now granted, to the best of my knowledge there has also never been a state tournament or state championship that has fallen during Holy Week in the time that Foys has been Bishop, either. I'm really curious to find out how this sits with him.

No idea from me what will happen with the Catholic schools from the Diocese of Lexington, or the Archdiocese of Louisville.

Swimming and wrestling would be the only other two that would ever possibly have state tourneys around then. I don't think they have.

Interesting post?  I have no knowledge but are you stating committee suggested one way and principal had a Dan Fogelberg moment and stated I am the leader of the band!  So move forward with other candidates.  Matt might have some explaining to do.

Exactly what I was told. I can't say if it's 100% fact, but I assumed it was since I heard it from 4 different folks in Ft. Thomas. One of them works at HHS. They're not on any committee, but I figured if they work at the school they probably had good insight.

I tend to agree. Something doesn’t add up. Is there something personal with Steve and the administration? Steve’s character has never been in question and he’s produced. HHS had their guy and he backed out. You’d think it would be an easy solution to go back to Steve.

I heard the principal and Lickert graduated from HHS together and the principal had a grudge from ye olden days. Heard one of them was in the band and one of them was the star quarterback, or something like that. Imagine if Screech didn't want AC Slater to get hired back at Bayside to coach the wrestling team.

According to BGP it was the runner up choice who backed out of the job. So now they have to start a search all over again and the coaches who were knowingly passed over have to decide if they will swallow pride and accept an offer that may or may not come.

Hell, who even applied for the job?   Do we have that list?   That’ll tell the tale of how coveted this job is.

Half of Danville has let me know that Coach Clevenger declined to even interview for the job. That’s the reason I started the thread.  Coach Clevenger would rather stay at Danville and fight for the football program in Danville(been a headache for him)  instead of even interviewing for what people say is still one of the best jobs in the state.

That intrigued me about just how coveted this job is.

Don't know if HHS asked Clevanger to interview, or if Clevanger applied himself for an interview and then reconsidered. Was told a while back that he called the day before and cancelled though.

    And you are completely wrong!!

gave access to their clinic pass, invited them to Saturday films (think Roller may have been only one to attend), open practices, did all the meetings FTJFL Pres asked him to attend, provided all information to them as requested, talked a lot with Nevels regarding training, invited 8th grade teams to pre-game activities with team.......

as for his staff, ALWAYS in communication with the staff!!  Long tenure staff, so not sure ignoring them would have caused them to stay.  He didn’t overtake the freshman program because he wanted freshman coaches to have freedom to run their program, but he was available at any time.

The newly ex Highlands staffers tell folks around NKY a different story. Including long tenured staff.

I have not heard anything from my boys, but this is comical if it is the case. He is the 1st one off the bench in our JV games.

No idea who your boys are but the CCH boys I talked to all agreed "He has a handful of explanations he gives for why he wanted to leave, depending on who he is talking to. But he told most everyone he was buddies with that he was hacked off about not starting JV basketball."

Didn’t they just have a Highlands guy who is a deep-down a Highlands guy?

Yep. And he was a Highlands guy who didn't give the time of day to the middle school league coaches and players. BW hardly gave the time of day to a lot of his assistant coaching staff too. Simple answer, they had a deep-down Highlands guy but not the right deep-down Highlands guy.
