  1. Here is your 8th Region rankings and review. Give me grace as I am not super familiar with the 8th region, but I will do my best to give you a solid ranking and then you guys can argue in the comments. But nevertheless, here we go.

    1. North Oldham (11-2).
The Mustangs went 3-0 on the week and went home as the champs of the Mason County Invitational Tournament. They did so with a 34 point win over Scott, 12 point win over Walton-Verona, and a 23 point win over Campbell County. North Oldham is led on the year by Grant Neal (19 and 5) and Jack Fischer (14 and 8). The Mustangs will be back in action Tuesday at home against Holy Cross (Louisville).

    2. Woodford County (9-2)
The Yellow Jackets took part in the White, Greer, & Maggard Holiday Classic this past week and went 2-1 on the week. They beat Harrison County by 18 and Cooper by 2, but then got throttled by Lex Cath by 26. Most see Lex Cath as one of the top teams in the state so it’s nothing to get too caught up in, but it’s obviously a game they need to bounce back from. Woodford has four players averaging double digits so far on the year. They’ll be back in action Friday as they take on Spencer County at home in a district matchup.

    3. Oldham County (9-4).
The Colonels are now winners of 5 straight and also won the City of Middletown Holiday Classic. They beat Murray by 9, Hoptown by 8, and Eastern by 8. Oldham County was led by Max Green in the win against Eastern as he went for 29 and 10. The Colonels play Ballard at home Thursday night, then follow that up the next night with Sayre at home.

    4. Walton Verona (10-4)
The Bearcats went 2-1 on the week in the Mason County Invitational with an 11 point win over Augusta, a 12 point loss to North Oldham, then a nice 2 point win over tournament host Mason County. The Bearcats are led in scoring on the year by Aaron Gutman (21.8), Zach Smith (15.9), and Julian Dixon (12.2). Walton Verona opens up this week with 8th Region All A with a game against Trimble County.

    5. Spencer County (6-7)
Spencer went 2-1 on the week down at Daytona Beach FL with wins over Burrell PA and Steinbrenner FL, but a 19 point loss to CAL. The Bears have shown they can play with anyone with their win over Male, but it seems like they need to show some sort of consistency. They can do so this week with a game Wednesday against Henry County and then a big district game Friday night at Woodford.

    6. Williamstown (9-1)
The Demons are winners of 9 straight and have put together a nice start to the season. They went 2-0 on the week with wins over Southwestern and Lynn Camp. Knowing what I know about the 12th and the 13th, I would probably say that time will tell on the Demons as their schedule starts to pick up. This week they play Thursday in the 8th Region All A Classic against TBA.

    7. Simon Kenton (5-8)
I’m going to put Simon Kenton here based off my eye test from watching them online and Shelby and Anderson in person. It seems like SK opened the year up with some stiff competition, but has since settled in. They went 2-1 on the week with wins over Butler and Jeffersontown, but lost in the semi’s of the Ashland Invitational against Danville Christian Academy by 6. The pioneers are back in action on Friday as they travel to Bryan Station.

    8. Shelby County (7-5).
The Rockets went 1-2 on the week in the Mercer County Holiday Classic. I got the chance to watch them and was impressed with Dillon Ritchey and Michael Jones. Shelby lost to Scott Co by 7, Mercer Co by 12, but rebounded with a 8 point win over West Jess. Shelby is back in action on Tuesday against South Oldham, Friday against Anderson Co at home, then wrap the week up on Saturday with Carroll County at home.

    9. Gallatin County (8-4)
The Wildcats went 2-1 on the week in the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic. They opened up tournament play with a 37 point win over Claiborne TN, then had a setback against Monroe Co by 3, before wrapping up with a 10 point win over Trion GA. Gallatin will be back in action this week on Tuesday in the 8th Region All A Classic as they take on Cornerstone Christian.

    10. Anderson County (9-4)
The Bearcats went 3-0 on the week with a 26 point win over Bellevue, a 13 point win over Nicholas Co, and a 14 point win over Beechwood. They’re now winners of four straight and are being led on the year by Carson Sutherland (15.8 & 3.8). Anderson plays Garrard Co on the road Tuesday and Shelby Co on the road Friday.

    Best of the Rest:

    11. Collins (6-6)

    12. Owen County (6-5)

    13. Henry County (9-5)

    14. Grant County (6-6)

    15. South Oldham (6-6)

    16. Carroll County (3-8)

    17. Trimble County (3-11)

    18. Eminence (3-9)

  2. Here is your 13th Region rankings and reviews from Week 5. Most teams were in some sort of Christmas tournament of sorts and we got to see a lot of games played in a short time. Here’s how the teams shake out.

    1. Harlan County (13-2).
Harlan County spent their break in the Arby’s Classic in Bristol Tennessee. They opened the tournament up with a win over Oak Ridge TN, before falling by 25 to Kell GA. They were able to bounce back and finish fifth in the tournament with wins over George Wythe VA by 8 and South Shore NY by 8. This was a big time tournament that will pay dividends for the Black Bears on through the year. Harlan Co has two big time games at the end of the end week with Corbin on Friday and North Laurel Saturday.

    2. South Laurel  (9-2)
The Cardinals had another unblemished week by going 3-0 and winning the Richmond Car and Truck Holiday Classic at Mad Central. South beat North Hardin by 7, GRC by 3, and Marshall Co by 10. South continues to show that they are likely the most likely to unseat Harlan County at this point. South plays at Harlan on Tuesday and then at Boyle on Saturday.

    3. Bell County (13-0).
The Bobcats continue to be the 13ths only undefeated team. Bell took part in the Carolina Invitational in Charleston SC and went 3-0 winning the tournament. They beat Bishop England SC by 2, Hilton Head Christian Academy by 1 in OT, then won the championship over Skyline AL by 21. Bell plays Knox Central in the 2A sectional on Tuesday then wraps the week up against Daniel Boone TN at ETSU.

    4. Corbin (5-3).
Corbin had a tough week in their own Cumberland Falls Invitational by going 1-2 on the week. They opened up with a 32 point win over Paris, only before falling to Webb TN and Daniel SC by 14 and 10 respectively. Things don’t get any easier for Corbin as this week they play Danville Christian Academy at home on Tuesday, Harlan County at home on Friday, and Ashland at home on Saturday.

    5. Whitley County (12-1)
Whitley took part in the Borderline Classic over the break and went 3-0 and won it. This is the second straight tournament the Colonels have won. They beat South Doyle by 9, Barbourville by 37, and Garrard Co by 20. Whitley plays McCreary in the 2A section on Tuesday, then at Belfry on Saturday. Whitley is putting together a really nice season and we will know sooner than later if they can upend Corbin to make the region.

    6. Clay County (8-5)
Clay had an up and down week at the Island Beach Blowout. They started off with a win over Fort Walton FL, before losing their next two to Douglass GA by 3, and to Jefferson Davis AL by 12. Hayden Harris is back with the Tigers but he didn’t play in any of the games this week. Clay kicks off district this week with a game at NL on Friday, then they will face Danville Christian at Lincoln on Saturday.

    7. Pineville (8-4)
The Mountain Lions went 3-0 on the week in the Chain Rock Classic. They beat Trimble Co by 15, Somerset Christian by 15, and Powell County by 11. Pineville has put together a nice year and the 51st district will be a tight race between them and Knox Central. Pineville plays Thomas Walker VA on Thursday, then plays Jackson Co on Saturday in the 13th Region All A Classic.

    8. Knox Central (10-3).
Knox went 3-0 on the week in the Burgin Holiday Tournament. They beat Fort Knox by 38, Louisville Collegiate by 28, and Shawnee by 18. Gavin Chadwell had a monster final game with 24 and 20. He’s been dominating on the season. Knox has a chance to shake up the rankings on Tuesday as they play Bell Co in the 2A sectional. Knox will also play Red Bird at home on Thursday.

    9. North Laurel (4-9).
North went 2-2 on the week and doubled up their win total. They took place in the White, Greer, and Maggard Holiday Classic. They opened up tournament play with a 9 point loss to LaRue, then beat Calloway Co by 6 and Taylor Co by 5. They finished the tournament with a 7 point loss to Madison Southern. I’m not ready to write the Jags off and think they will give Clay Co all they want in the district. Those questions will get answered on Friday as they play Clay County at home, then they play Harlan County on Saturday at Corbin.

    10. Middlesboro (5-6)
Middlesboro stopped a four game losing streak with a 34 point win over Trimble County to end the Chain Rock Classic. Middlesboro lost to Somerset by 4 and Raceland by 4 in the previous two. The Yellowjackets will play OBI on Saturday in the 13th Region All A.

    Best of the Rest:

    11. Jackson County (5-6).

    12. OBI (7-5)

    13. Williamsburg (5-8)

    14. Harlan (2-8)

    15. Barbourville (5-10)

    16. Lynn Camp (2-9)

    17. Red Bird (0-5)

Y’all have to remember the super will control this hire IMO. I doubt he’d want to hire 2 coaches…. I don’t think foley applies or leaves SW for PC. JMO. The names I’ve heard JF isn’t one of them.

I doubt Foley leaves for PC but that would have nothing to do with the super. More so it’s not like they can promise to give him more at PC if it’s all coming from the same board.

What happened to turn Pikeville into this juggernaut? They had the 3 year run in the late 80s, but this new run is obviously longer and shows no signs of slowing down. Was it economical, coaching, class expansion or something else?

Good coaching, good players, best facilities in the state, and I think a run of fortune with Mayfield and Beechwood both being 2A.

  5. Here is your 13th Region Top 10 Week 4. Harlan County may not have won the KOB but they showed they are more than capable of competing and beating some of the top teams in the state. South Laurel also won their tournament, and Bell County won theirs as well. The 13th is playing good basketball right now.

    1. Harlan County (10-1).
Harlan County faced their first L of the season in the first round of the KOB against Bowling Green, but bounced back and knocked off Butler County, De La Salle, and Male to win the consolation bracket. Trent Noah continues to show why he is one of the best players in our state. Noah and Maddox Huff scored 24 and 22 in the win over Male. HC will play Oak Ridge tomorrow in the Arby’s Classic and will likely have a couple games after that.

    2. South Laurel  (6-2)
The Cardinals had an unblemished week by going 3-0 and winning the Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge. In doing so, they beat Owen Co by 13, Rockcastle by 13, and CAL by 1 on a last second shot by Jordan Mabe. Right now it feels like South and Harlan Co are a notch ahead of the rest in the 13th. SL will play North Hardin the 27th this week. Word is a player may be joining the Cardinals from another top 5 team in the region.

    3. Corbin (4-1).
Corbin went 2-1 in the Legacy Nissan Challenge by beating Harlan and Rockcastle before losing to CAL by 21. Corbin is team that will only get better throughout the year. Corbin was led by a balanced scoring attack in their 20 point win over Rock with 6 players scoring 8+. Corbin hosts the Cumberland Falls Invitational this week and will play Paris and Webb TN in pool play.

    4. Bell County (10-0).
Bell is a team that just keeps winning. They won the Redmond Auto Group Holiday Classic by knocking off Cumberland Gap, Owsley County, and Scott County. None of those games were closer than 27 points. Bell was led in the championship game by Ethan Buell and Blake Burnett.

    5. Clay County (7-3)
Clay finished as runnerups in the McCreary invitational with wins over Danville and McCreary Central and a loss in the finals to Wayne County on a buzzer beater. Elijah Bundy had 14 in the loss to Wayne. Clay will play in the Island Beach Blowout in FL this week.

    6. Whitley County (9-1)
Whitley went 3-0 again on the week. They’ve not lost a game since their first and ride a 9 game win streak. They went 2-0 in the Hoosier Gym tournament and won against Belfry at home. They play this week in the Borderline Classic in TN against South-Doyle, Barbourville, and Garrard County. They were led by a balanced scoring attack in their win against Belfry with 5 players scoring double digits.

    7. Pineville (5-4)
The Mountain Lions went 1-2 on the week with a win over Lanler Christian Academy and losses against George Wythe and Morgan County. They play Trimble County and a few others this week in the Chain Rock Classic. Pineville looks for a little more consistency to help out Sawyer Thompson and Ashton Moser who are both averaging 23.2 and 22.0 on the year.

    8. Knox Central (7-3).
Knox went 2-1 and have far surpassed their season win total last year with wins over Casey County and McCreary Central this week. They took a blowout loss against Wayne County by 33. Knox is by far the most improved team in the region and it’s good to see them back winning and competing. Gavin Chadwell coming back in has been a huge boost for the panthers.

    9. North Laurel (2-7).
North went 1-2 on the week with losses against Baylor TN and LCA, but a loss against Deltona FL. It’s hard for me to drop them much lower than this because of the schedule they’re playing. I think North will be fine and challenge Clay in the district, but we will find out more on those two come January 5th. For now, North plays in the White, Gree, and Maggard Holiday Classic with games against LaRue and others.

    10. Middlesboro (4-4)
Even though Middlesboro lost to Harlan 10 days ago, they are currently playing better basketball than them. With close losses this week to Johnson Central and Leslie County, the Yellowjackets look to get back to their winning ways against Somerset and others in the Chain Rock Classic at Pineville.

    Best of the Rest:

    11. Harlan (1-6).

    12. Jackson County (5-6)

    13. Williamsburg (4-4)

    14. OBI (5-4)

    15. Barbourville (3-9)

    16. Lynn Camp (2-6)

    17. Red Bird (0-5)

What is your thoughts now after every one has played a few more games? Honestly I see 2 teams right now(granted maybe not at the end of the year) that are well above. The SOS while helping with win lose is not helping several of the teams

I think Harlan County is a clear cut 1. South Laurel beating CAL in their tournament I think they’re for sure 2 and if they add Hayden Harris from Clay it’ll make them even tougher. They’re probably the two I’d say are well above. Corbin is always a tough out but Davis has Coach P’s number so they’ll likely be stuck having to go the long route in the region. As of right now, couldn’t see anyone but those three stringing together three straight to win the region. But I do think 1 and 2 are much higher than 3.
