The defending Class 2A state champion Lexington Christian Academy Eagles open the 2026 season against the Class 6A North Hardin Trojans in the eCampus.com Bowl at LCA on Friday, August 21. Kickoff is expected at approximately 8:30 p.m., following the 5:30 p.m. Bryan Station–South Warren game. This is a rematch of last season’s opener, when LCA defeated North Hardin 41-21. The Eagles went on to finish 12-3 and win the 2025 Class 2A championship with a 33-28 victory over Owensboro Catholic. It was the second state championship in program history and LCA’s first in Class 2A. North Hardin finished 2025 at 5-6, reaching the Class 6A playoffs before falling to Bullitt East 28-21 in the opening round. Matchups to Watch The central matchup should be LCA’s experienced backfield against North Hardin’s rebuilt defense. Whelan presents a difficult opening-week assignment because he can win through the air or as a runner, while Hood and Gudalis prevent defenses from focusing exclusively on the quarterback. On the other side, North Hardin’s opportunity may be its size, athleticism and experience along portions of the offensive line. The Trojans will need to identify their new offensive leaders quickly, avoid negative plays and create some sustained drives to keep Whelan and the LCA offense off the field. LCA has the advantage in proven returning production and enters as the defending 2A champion, but North Hardin is a 6A program with athletes and enough returning varsity experience to make this a meaningful early test. Last year LCA won this matchup 41-21. Does North Hardin close the gap with its new group, or do Whelan and the defending state champions begin 2026 with another victory? The Eagles are flying high into 2026 after capturing the 2025 KHSAA Class 2A State Championship with a thrilling 33-28 victory over Owensboro Catholic at Kroger Field. It was LCA's second title in program history and first in 2A, shaking off some tough losses in recent years and proving they're a force in 2A. Coach Oakley Watkins enters Year #2 at the helm after a successful debut season. Finishing 12-3, with losses to state runner-up Franklin County, and state champions CAL and Boyle County. The program graduated a talented senior class that led the charge, including standouts like Brody Adams (OL), Mac Darland (MLB/RB), Dean Hester (K/P), Tyler King (WR/CB), Holder Klaiber (OL), Logan Mays (TE/DE), Jamey Lee Patterson (DL), and Jaxon Ramsey (DL). These guys were instrumental in the title win, but the cupboard isn't bare—plenty of young talent stepped up in 2025. In fact, LCA returns 8 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense for the 2026 season. KEY RETURNERS FOR 2026 OFFENSE QB: Nash Whelan (Jr) - State Championship MVP. 2,526 yards pass with 28 TDs. Watkins' system clicked in Year 1, and with another offseason, this team could be even more explosive. CONCERNS Missing a senior leader at middle linebacker in Mac Darland. He was the QB of the defense in 2025. Can someone step into this role? Both sides of the line might need time to gel, as LCA loses some key big men. LCA returns all the rest of their receiving core, but who replaces explosive receiver Tyler King, who was team leader (by far) in both yards receiving (1049) and receiving TDs (12)? Interesting, did not know this: Jackson Burke, the sophomore quarterback for Christian Academy of Louisville (KY), enters today's Class 3A state championship game against Murray with a single-season passing completion percentage of 82.3% (200 completions out of 243 attempts, per reports as of December 4, 2025). This puts him on track to break the national high school football record for single-season completion percentage (minimum qualifiers typically apply, and he easily meets them). The current national record is 81.5%, set by Kane Archer of Greenwood High School (Arkansas) as a junior. Burke's performance in today's game will determine his final percentage for the 2025 season—if he maintains or stays above ~82%, he will set the new record. Even a below-average game is unlikely to drop him below the mark given his high volume of attempts already, but a strong outing could push it higher (he's thrown for around 3,200+ yards and 48 TDs this season with only one interception). This would be a remarkable feat for a sophomore in a state title game.
