  1. Ugh we had a similar situation with one of our kids, and I’m still bitter 5 years later (LOL just kidding, sortof).

Wanted to mention that seventh grade is also a great year for kids to begin golf.

We knew very little about golf but daughter decided to take it up in 7th grade… ended up MVP in HS!! Who knew??

Hang in there, sending a prayer to your daughter, but I agree... when one door closes another opens!

  2. I tend not to be a very detailed oriented person – good for you for noticing the fine print. Sometimes I wonder how much I’ve overpaid for not doing so.

We are currently in the process of getting things in order to pay college tuition this Fall. We noticed a hefty gap between tuition due and the Fin Aid we were expecting. Upon digging into it we noticed the college was charging the 3 credit hour price for 1 hour labs, in 2 separate cases. What the heck? Would’ve thought their “tuition charging programs” would auto catch that. Thanks goodness we took the time to dig in and report the $3k mistake.

  3. I can’t possibly imagine dealing with something like this… sending prayers for strength and peace to you and your mom and dad (God bless him!).

I’m heading home for a family gathering tomorrow and plan to give my parents a big hug.

  4. I would add the St. Joseph Orphan’s Picnic in August (it may be called something different now), on Frankfort Ave. I always remember it being the epic summer Church festival with a great chicken dinner.

Was just in L’ville last week and took a long walk with my sisters along Bardstown Rd. (with a stop at both Heine Brothers coffee and Graeters ice cream at the Douglas Loop). So fun!

  5. I absolutely love these stories!! Giving is so therapeutic; you never know the impact it has on the giver/receiver.

Awhile back I became acquainted with a young gas station cashier. I would stop there most mornings on my way to work for gas, soft drink, etc. She was just one of those upbeat, sweethearts that are fun to chit chat with and makes everyone happy.

Anyway, one morning she was crying and her co-worker shared that the young woman had become pregnant, the guy had run off, and she was not sure what to do. My husband & I decided to give this girl all the baby stuff we had recently accumulated (pack n play, stroller, clothes). I’ll never forget the look in her eyes when we dropped off everything. It really helped me through a tough blow / low point that I was dealing with at the time.

  6. Bought and sold 1 each on Craigslist with no problems.

This is paradoxical whining – but the only issue as a Craigslist seller is that your phone blows up. There are constant calls/texts, morning, noon, night. If you use your phone for work it’s very distracting. You repeat the same story 1,000 times. Although that IS the goal - the car sold within a few days thankfully.

  7. Mine is paid off. I'd like to say it felt great but I had it planned to be paid off right as My oldest headed to college.

Sooo funny –but very nice planning on your part.

In theory we should all be able to reap the benefits at least for awhile, but life indeed happens.

  8. Recently it’s been I Bet My Life by Imagine Dragons.

I tear up because it makes me think back about MY relationship with my parents as a teen; and now getting it all handed back to me by my own (thanks Karma).

Anyway, I love the truth in the song title and have taken comfort in the lyric “There’s you in everything I do.”

  9. I have long been a fan of the show, though I don't subscribe to all of their beliefs.

I have mixed feelings on the issue. The son made mistakes when he was a 14 year old. Doesn't he deserve forgiveness at some point? If he's made amends with his victims, then I don't think that it's my place to judge him, particularly since this type of behavior doesn't seem to continue.

On the other hand, it makes their arguments against homosexuality (i.e., they shouldn't have access to children, because they might be pedophiles) a bit hypocritical.

Agree with this!! And on a side note, I really like Josh’s wife.

Anyway I'm bummed the show was canceled. As a recent fan, I was curious to (1) watch one of the sons go thru a courtship, to see if the same “rules” would apply; and (2) see Jana (the oldest girl) meet a great guy (for some reason she always seems a little sad to me).

  10. I’ll admit I recently became a closet 19 kids and counting fan.

I just got sucked in by the “side hug” entertainment. And then Jill & Jessa’s subsequent courtships, marriages, pregnancies, etc. Just couldn’t stop myself.

Yikes though about the emerging dark secrets, and the show has now been yanked.

  11. When anything big or surprising happened, good or bad, mom would exclaim “Lord help us!”, then dad would immediately chime in “The Saints preserve us!”. Only in a Catholic family ha ha.

It must be ingrained because I find myself exclaiming one or the other sayings in my own house from time to time.

Thinking back on it now I just find it so endearing.

  12. It can be a lot of fun for kids especially if the players talk and clown around with them a bit.

We forked out $20 last year for our youngest to meet some UofL bball players at the Florence Mall. The funny part is after the autograph session the UofL guys walked around the Florence Mall into the Food Court having a good time. Several people stopped and posed for a pic and/or an autograph with them, free o’ charge.

Lesson learned! That’s how I’m going about it next time. LOL
