For the rest of Thursday, all games at Transy. In order Beck 1,2,3,4, Campus Center: 8:15 Robertson v. Elder Wh. Varsity, NCC v. Woodford Varsity, N. Hardin v. Cooper varsity, Somerset v. Elder Pur. Varsity, Somerset v. C. Hardin freshmen. 9:00 St. Henry Wh v. N. Hardin JV, Larue v. Lafayette Freshmen, Batavia v. Trimble freshmen, Woodford v. B. Central freshman, no fifth game. I think tomorrow is a tournament, I’ll try to get another photo earlier in the day and post what I can. For details including a bargain-priced overnight option see this link: Transylvania University Athletics This is a really cool camp for the kids, play on the college floor (although sectioned off) in the gorgeous Beck Center, interact with college players who serve as officials, eat in the dining hall, maybe even spend the night on campus. Gotta be an eye-opener for some of the kids and a great team-building exercise. And if they stay after their last game Friday they can watch the Ky-Ind All-star game on the same court.

Schedule says Mason JV plays THURSDAY 4:45 vs Lafayette, 5:30 vs. Dunbar, both games in gym 3 - Alumni gym at left end of building as you face it from street. Entry usually through rear door only. Funny, in the original posting of that schedule, my phone displays the 3rd column fine but my desktop/browser only shows two columns. ??

My son was called to ref at LexCath today (Mon) thru Thurs, 2-10PM. They usually run two courts in the main gym + 1 in the old gym, sometimes start late or finish early if a team cancels, and sometimes only have 1-2 floors still going at the end of the night, but lots of games during prime time. Frosh, JV, and varsity. Entry usually through rear doors only.

Note that this agreement does not cover all private schools in Fayette County, nor does it cover moves between LCA and LexCath. It ONLY covers moves with FCPS at one end of the road and LCA or LexCath at the other end.

We’ve sent two boys thru high school and travel basketball and on to college ball. I still don’t know a darn thing about basketball, but I’ve become an expert on camps and motel rates. The 5 Star camps use different coaches at each location, and the experience will be as good as the coaching team. A friend of ours does these camps all over, but he didn’t do the Louisville camp my son went to in 2012. That camp was below average, not worth the high cost. See who the coaches will be now that it moves to Wilmore. As you say, the Ky 5 star has been in conflict with the NCAA active periods, and yes that impacts attendance by the better players. We had to pick our son up at noon the final day to make a certified-tournament game that night. I would not do the Ky 5 Star camp again unless I heard some success stories. The Georgetown camps attract a lot of good players from all over, as you say, and the kids like the camps. However, they sell these as exposure camps and claim scouts will flock to the kids they rate highly. Read their scouting report on their website, they overrate something awful, I doubt many coaches take their reports seriously. Many kids they rated as sure bets never get a look from any college, and I haven’t met anyone who said they got recruited because of a Rick Bolus rating. Buy it for the right reason if you buy it. For value in this area, the best value we ever got was the Rondo camp in Louisville, Doug Bibby of Central was running it at the time and my son got coached by a Harlem Globetrotter. Rondo showed up and autographed each kids’ shirt and played around some. It went a day longer than most camps and full days instead of half days, but cost less money, and they fed the kids each day. Mostly Louisville and southern Indiana kids, so a good level of competition and my son made friends he played against for several years. Check Rondo’s website to see if they still have it. I think it’s just a day camp, we have Louisville relatives so it was easy to keep our son up there all week. The Transylvania camps have a good reputation, and several sessions to fit your schedule. Day camp and sleepover available. If your kid isn’t too advanced, JP Blevins (ex-UK captain) comes back to Lexington for his Get the Edge camp in July. The kids love him, it’s at LCA, and he’ll give them a practice plan DVD to take home with them. It’s a good bang for the buck, but doesn’t get the high-level players. The coaches are mostly college players, or for the young kids even high-school players as coaches. EKU puts on camps, too, but I have no experience with them. Mike Scott works kids out at the ice center, imho your kid will get more out of 4-5 sessions with him than a week at most camps, for less money. Hope this info helps.

Congratulations, Will. I know your mom and dad are proud! Will is a great teammate, and a really tough, hard-nosed kid, and gets it done in the classroom too. Shining example of extra effort, went to school early to lift weights with the football kids, at aau practice always came early or stayed late to do individual workout. Fights to the end. Perfect point guard personality. He’ll have his moments at MSU for sure, don’t be surprised when he finishes on scholly. It’s about the size of the fight in the dog. On a side note, this makes at least 7 kids off that Charlotte Court group that now have college gigs, with a couple more still in the works. Maybe not the high profile some of the sponsored teams have, but a bunch that stuck together, loved and supported each other for years. Great to see the success they’ve all earned.

Attended the Metro Exposure event at Iroquois HS in Louisville yesterday. Was pretty impressed, they delivered the coaches – maybe 40? - and ran a good program. Three groups of approx. 25 boys per shift, an hour and a quarter per shift. Drills plus 3x3 halfcourt and 5x5 fullcourt. Be interested to hear the opinions of anyone else who went. My only criticism of their system was that a few of the players didn’t get rotated between both courts so maybe only got seen closely by half the coaches. Several kids may have punched their tickets to college. Coaches were grabbing kids in the hallway, especially the bigs. A little tougher for the guards to separate themselves from the pack in an event like this. Several offers were given on the spot. Thought this event ran smoothly and did a good job. Charged admission but there was nowhere to sit, otherwise first-class. I’d also recommend this event or others like it for seniors. A lot of the seniors are getting very nervous about now because they don’t have anything lined up, but these small schools are really just getting in the swing of recruiting next year’s team. The coaches were much more motivated at this event than at an AAU-type or NCAA-certified event where all the kids have one or more years of high school left. This was “here and now, baby.”

In general, I’m in favor of this rule. But maybe it's too broad. Goes past detering the athletics-only holdback and now includes punishing kids held back on the advice of professional educators that feel the kid needs it for academics or social/emotional reasons. That group of kids will already be stigmatized by being held back, and it’s a shame they must lose something else (athletics) at a time when athletics team play and success could help them thru a tough spot. Wish the rule only applied to holdbacks requested by the parents without the educator’s endorsement.

Last week, the Kentucky Board of Education approved a new statewide rule recommended by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association that, beginning in the 2015-2016 school year, middle school students who repeat a grade for any reason won't be able to play on a school athletic team in the year they are repeating. Good observation. I was on the advisory board for Eastside Tech several years back, and at that time they were planning to implement full-day enrollments by adding core classes to the vocational curriculum. The time and expense of transporting the kids being the issue, especially because some kids come from surrounding counties that have no tech centers of their own. I assumed that had been implemented. Just called and they said it was scuttled, never done. Also told me they moved the horticultural/agricultural component to a tech center of its own out Leestown Rd., and it's also a half day. Each student has a registration with one of the existing 5 high schools, or an out-of-county school. Thanks for straightening me out, usually my wife does it but she's busy this week.

A redistricting committee was formed last week. Click on this: School board approves land purchase for sixth high school Lexington also started another high school this year, “the STEAM academy”, which is a partnership with UK to give kids the advantages of two giant taxing institutional bureaucracies. They enrolled the first (freshman) class of 150 this school year in temporary quarters in the old Johnson Elementary building and will continue adding 150 freshmen per year until they become fully operational with 600 students in a facility near the UK campus. I don’t know if this small school will then have athletic teams or not. Fayette County has two technical center high schools that have no athletic teams, so there are precedents both ways.
