    If it’s a bad link, I apologize.

I saw someone else on this topic post the link to this YouTube.  And when looking through their YouTube account, it sure looks they’ve broadcasted several games in the past.

I stand corrected.   Looks like a good link.  Not what I have experienced in the past with you tube channels.

How do you justify this?  All head coaches of boys and girls sports are working 52 weeks a year for their programs.  The big three sports should be pretty equal IMO.  So HHS is going to pay the running back coach or defensive line coach more than the head baseball coach?

    Head Football Coach:  $16,000

    Head Basketball Coach:  $8276

    Head Baseball Coach:  $4966

    Five assistant football coaches:  $6698

The number one consideration is what you have to pay in the market for the coach you want.

The other considerations to justify the expense is 1) the number of students under your supervision and instruction and 2) the revenue that is generated from the sport.

Looking at the list of salaries for both the HC and assistants,  I would say the Basketball has the highest per student cost at Highlands.  And football generates the highest revenue. Other schools may be different.

Drop to 4A where Weinrich proposed to be because he understands football!  Now for the new coach, it makes sense to do?

Scale back the schedule for the new coach—that’s laughable & insulting to THE Highlands program!

They have already stopped playing GCL schools and moving to 4A will replace some 5A schools due to playing district games.  They can keep Cov Cath and some other local revivals.  So yes their schedule will be scaled back if playing in 4A district games.

As far as I am concerned the Highlands Broadcasting Network is the gold standard and I would like to see high school kids integrated into all broadcasts of high school sports with the exception of maybe the State Championships.

I don't want to dwell on this but Highlands and CovCath are funded different ways so I can't fault CovCath here.

Check out this HHS Link for You tube

Was one of the Kids doing the games on Friday nights at HHS.

Is it for certain that Highlands will continue to play CovCath?  I believe that CovCath is solidly in 5A and Highlands is playing up.  I see that changing when the next classification cycle occurs.

I believe the best course for HHS is to play against schools their own size and play CCH each year just like Beechwood does.  Playing in 4A will still give HHS a big challenge and NKY will get to see a CCH vs HHS game.

  6. What!?!? You voluntarily play up in 5A and then bemoan your number of boys compared to your peers?

You can miss me with this narrative.

Post was presented to confirm that changes are needed in the future.

I have never been a fan of playing out of your class. Not even for the reason of travel expenses or rivalries. The players should come first by providing them the best chance to succeed against schools of like size.

  7. Highlands has reached that critical mass state. I’m doing my best to be constructive, but now is the time to decide if they want to make a change, or continue to accept mediocrity.

Clearly they could try and find another Dale, however they are under weight in their class.

    From KHSAA Web Site.

HHS vs CCH Number of Boys.PNG

    5A schools range 724 to 505 boys

    4A schools range 552 to 430 boys

HHS average boys number is 486 and that is skewed due to two years (14-15) and (15-16).

Since this is a HHS vs Conner thread - Conner has an average boy number of 707. That is 221 more boys than HHS.

  8. Sorry to be difficult, but without knowing the skill level and ability, etc. it is hard to say.

In general, if two players are of comparable ability, I would prefer that we play both guys, one on offense and one on defense.

The short answer, easy answer is what ever combination gave our team the best opportunity to win, that is what we would do. And, that determination would be driven by what we saw from our guys in practice and workouts everyday, along with performance in games.

Hope that somewhat answers your question.

And, 31 seniors would be very different for me. At Paris, we would have some really good teams with only 27 or 28 players. If I coached a team with 31 seniors, I would need to seek out the advice of coaches that have dealt with those numbers before. But, that would be a good circumstance!

I completely understand there are a lot of conditions that need to be evaluated in making decisions on how to manage who gets time on the field.

The success that HHS had in the past has drawn more guys to the team. Also Dale and Brian both worked together to get the buy-in for platooning. Getting more guys involved, having them focus on one task, keeping players fresh and limiting injuries while having a winning season are very good goals. However, today looking at "this good circumstance" has its limitation. I believe when the talent of the players drop off, the larger numbers work against a teams success.

There is still football to play and I hope the coaches are seeking advise like you mentioned.

From my perspective I am sure the coaches are working to find ways to get the best players more time on the field.

    Thanks for your input.

  9. On the coach part.... Brian Weinrich is outstanding and learned from the best as an assistant for Coach Mueller. Although I defend coaches and think overwhelmingly they make the right decision, most of the time, we all make mistakes. I am not claiming he is infallible. But, he is an exceptional coach and person. He also learned from one of the greatest of all time that was an incredible fit at Highlands.

When I was at Mason County, every chance I got, I tried to learn from the Highlands staff. I heard Brian at a clinic this summer.... these guys are still on top of their game and do an extraordinary job coaching football.

I would also add that experience is vastly underrated. Coach Weinrich is only going to grow into an even better and better coach.... which is scary because he is already very good.

I also think alot of David Trosper at Conner. He has worked his tail off. At some point, he and his staff/team deserve credit for a job well done. We beat Russell in 1997 and 2001. The Red Devils won a state title in 2006. We didn't beat them in those years because Ivan forgot how to coach or was a bad coach. We won those games because we were working like dogs and had good football players. And, they were still tough to beat.

Playing football at Highlands is special. Bumps in the road are ok and no one is immune from them. Sometimes, you appreciate the good times more after the rough spells.

    Good luck to the Birds!

    Just a question?

In your opinion how does a coach manage a game having 74 total players with 31 Seniors?

    1) Play as many guys as you can by Platooning - Try and keep a good team chemistry

    2) Play your best athletes, with some on both sides of the ball realizing a larger number of four year players will never see the field. Then deal with the issues that presents.

There are special teams but that is normally where some of the younger guys get on the field.

Looking at the roster the Junior's total 21 and the Soph total 22. So next year's player management may be a bit easier.

Just interested in how a coach approaches the Senior class?

  10. From an outsider's perspective, Highlands' best teams under Mueller always seemed to have at least one guy that could make things happen offensively against anyone, a player that commanded the attention of opposing defenses every week - Frisk, Lorenzen, Smith, Hamblen, Guidugli, Collinsworth, Towles, and Hoge immediately come to mind. Let's say those players were "tens". I don't think Weinrich has had any players of that caliber taking snaps, hand-offs, or catching balls since he's been calling the shots. Additionally, those "tens" had really strong supporting casts. When I look at the Birds now, I don't see those complimentary "eights" that they always seemed to have under Dale.

As far back as I can remember, Highlands has been the fittest team on the field in seemingly 99% of the games they've played. It doesn't look like they're slacking in that area under Weinrich. I'm thinking they're just going through a talent lull.

Its true that the QB position talent compared to Lorenzen, Guidugli, Towles, and Hoge have greatly dropped off. However the "eights" and some of the "tens" were playing both ways under Dale. That is not happening today. Today the "eights" and "tens" are divided up Off and Def. (not evenly in my opinion) and they even get subbed when they are playing half of a game or more than half as the defense has seen a lot more playing time recently.

I respect the desire to keep guys fresh and limit injuries however you are not going to compete in a higher class 5A or class 4A (Boyle) if you do not maximize the talent you have.

From what I see, HHS has a lot of guys dressing 74 total per their roster with 30 seniors. All the guys are working hard to get better and I am sure the coaches are looking at ways to get them on the field as best they can. However this is a drain on the talent pool of "eights" and "tens" and will have an affect on the teams performance.

  11. I think talent more than anything else is the glaring difference.

HHS is close in size to 4A Boyle County. Just slightly more boys and they lost 30-0. Since HHS is playing up in 5A the talent issue is more pronounced. Maximizing talent on the field is especially crucial playing up in class and that is the coaches responsiblity. From my prospective the current system being used maximizes participation not talent.

  12. If you are saying BW hasn’t used any guys both ways, you’re wrong. 2 years ago Huber, Johnson and Dunn all did. The problem is he hasn’t used the one who can make the biggest difference, Huddy.

I think BW's use of those guys both ways were desperate times takes desperate measures.

His priority as always been to platoon guys so they can focus on their position and keep them fresh and healthy.

My issue has been the unwillingness to adjust the system to the talent level. Being a mid 4A size school playing in a very competitive 5A class requires a coach to be willing to make adjustments in personnel outside of your core system.

The schedule for 2019 will present challenges and require adjustments to play guys both ways. Thru the season we will see if they can make the correct adjustments.

  13. Talent yes. As much talent as CovCath, no.

I also believe that some of the best players on CCH will play at a higher level after High School than the current HHS talent. The only exception I see is Huddleston could compete with the CCH talent. However because the talent on CCH spends more time on the field than the HHS talent made a bigger difference in the outcome of this game.

  14. Covcath has made many offenses look bad the last two seasons. To where it really doesnt matter who is calling the plays, they are going to make most plays look like bad plays because it's so hard to execute against them, unless you also have the type of talent they have. Which many teams dont this year including Highlands.

Unlike the HHS Coach, the CCH Coach is using their best talent on both sides of the ball. The HHS coach refuses to play guys both ways and apply their talent where it can be maximized on the field.

The HHS head coach switch from OC to DC and took over the defense, his old position when Dale ran the offense. This change has made the defense much better than in the past. However the Offense has not improved as much. I believe as a mid size 4A school playing up is 5A the coaches have to maximize the use of their best talent.

In the past the offense always had a strong quarterback, I am not seeing that now. I believe in part because they are not utilizing the talent they have and the QB play has been adversely affected.

  15. Standing on the goal line, North end zone, That looked like a Safety to me. The back got turned to his right when he was hit and his shoulder and leg made it out of the end zone but the ball looked like it never crossed the line. Bang bang play I know but looked like a missed call.

The below link seems to have a good look at the action. Based on this video it looked like a good call by the ref. 3 min 19 seconds into the video.

  16. To keep the game from becoming a running clock HHS offence will need to give the defense some rest. The one run and two pass then done is not going to cut it. The defense is much improved but they need time off the field.

If the starting QB is not able to complete the short route up the field pass then JV QB needs to come in and take over. Also it will be a along night if HHS does not make changes with personnel and start playing guys both ways.

  17. Largest attendance at a High School game I attended - Highlands vs Elder

Per Cincinnati.com "Some of the biggest games ever at Paul Brown Stadium date back almost two decades. According to the Bengals, the Elder-Highlands game in 2000 drew more than 30,000 fans and the OHSAA playoff doubleheader in 2001 between St. Xavier-Princeton and Colerain-Elder attracted more than 47,000 fans." Adam Baum, Cincinnati Enquirer Published 1:00 p.m. ET July 18, 2018

It was a Highlands Home game so they received the money from the gate. After a long delay because they could not process all the crowd (unanticipated) they opened the gate and let people in for free. First the lower level of the stadium filled to capacity and then they opened the top sections.

Even with the free entry they still collected in the 6 figure range for the game.

HHS lost the game on a controversial play that the big screen replay showed the Ref's error but because there was no review the play stood as called. Was a good game and fun night.
