Lets be realistic. If a high school coach was that good, he would be coaching college. In the end, it boils down to the kids. If you got the players, you will be successful. There are some exceptions, as there are to every rule. I challenge you this, how good is mueller as a coach if he was at Newport or Brossart? Lickert had a good season last year, where will CCHS be next year with no Durham? Lickert is a good coach, but CCHS is a 2-8 team last season without Durham.

Well, if the trophy says "state champs", then I'm sure which ever teams wins state in ky this season, they might have issue with it. Whether you agree or disagree with the system, it's the way it is. Is the winner of the NIT the national champ? Do they get rings that say "national champs" or a trophy?

You people realize this is a site of opinions. I was at the game, saw with my own eyes. Yes, he is very good. I felt he was overmatched against Holmes quickness and the speed of the game. There were several early unforced turnovers. This kid is going to get better and better. He is a tremendous athlete. Will be fun to watch him and the Holmes sophomore in the next few seasons. Guard play was the difference, if NCC got any, they may have won. It's not just on him, he's not the only guard on that team.

I agree, it was a nice win. They will win it again next year as well, and probably the year after. It's still not a state championship, sorry. We disagree however about mayfield lol. Too funny.....

Eddie eviston. 2 championships in his first 3 seasons. Who knows what he could have done if he stayed at NCC.

Also, I have never ripped on the players or the coaches. I was at the regional game, so I do watch them play. One of the reasons they lost the game was guard play. No disrespect to z. Pangallo, he's simply a sophomore and was overmatched and it seemed like the game was a little fast for him. He has a very bright future as a high school point guard for NCC. This team will be better next season than it was this year and he will be a major reason. I agree with some of the other people's statements about the upperclassmen not stepping up. As good as they will be next season, they still won't win state, it's that simple. Is grant a good coach? I think he does alright, I don't agree with influencing kids not to play other sports, but he seems to handle the game alright. Here's what you need to understand, in high school, the kids make the coach. It's not like you can get out and bring players you want into your system like college. He has had some very good players and has some good talent coming up.

That doesn't count, c'mon. That's like being the prettiest girl at an ugly girl camp. Anyone gonna remember who won an all A championship. It's like winning any other tourney. I mean, great job, but it's not a state championship.

Well said, and I can buy that as an excuse not to play the sport. Its high school, if you like it, play, if you dont like it, then dont play. its that simple. Where I take issue is, when coaches pressure the players not to play other sports for fear of some sort of punishment. Also, parents with unrealistic goals or dreams about their kid playing sports at the college level.

You also overlook the fact that the highlands coaches are "advising" their football players not to play other sports.

I don't have an agenda or an axe to grind. Referring to another reply. If the kids were choosing on their own without being told "you won't play", meaning playing basketball, then I could agree with you. NCC has 2 state championships in 3 years, so it's not hurting the program lol. Sometimes coaches forget that it's not about them, it's about the kids. I know for a fact that the football coaches encourage the kids to play everything and anything that interests them. Wish some of the others would follow suit. Seems there are a few on here taking offense to this lol.

Trust me when I tell you, I do know what it takes lol. I'm not trying to single him out, he was just an example. Why close the door on any opportunity? Lets be honest, kids have no idea at the age of 15-22 what they want or whats best for them. We all have friends that say, "I shoulda played this, I shoulda done that", "I wish someone would have told me". Well, I'm sure someone did, you just didn't listen.

I'm in no way saying it was a lock, c'mon. You have no idea what could or could not have done. My point is, he had as good a chance as you could ask for. Zero chance to make it to the nba.

I saw a post in another thread about high school athletes that don't have a real chance to play college basketball, should play other sports. I thought it was an excellent comment. It seems NCC has this problem and has been a problem over the last few years. I've watched the NCC varsity basketball team play a few times. They have some kids that could be serious studs in football and possibly play on the next level, but really have no chance at playing college basketball. IMO, their is only one basketball prospect on that team, jake Shultz or something like that, not sure on the last name. They had a kid a few years ago, jake geisler, he could have played on Sundays......now I hear he is trying to walk on at NKU. Where are these kids getting their advice from, guess that's my question. They need to realize, NKU isn't taking 5'9" players anymore. You better be better or as good as the sophomore from Holmes.

Funny thing, Mayfield beat Christian County that year as well I'm starting to realize that mayfield might be highlands south. Where is mayfield anyway, is it a suburb of fort Thomas?

I don't know anything about his financial situation. No kid in America is turning down scholarships to walk on. Unless his family is wealthy and they can afford it, then I might understand. Maybe he loves UK, I don't know. Anyway, good luck
