Honestly I'm not sure. It was basically down to 3 candidates the whole time, Jordan Marcum (Madison Central), Austin Maples (Montgomery County) and Cade Berryman (In-House). It came down to Marcum and Maples with Marcum getting the nod. Madison Central had a fantastic season last year and I'm certain Estill is hoping coach Marcum can bring some of that with him to Irvine. Maples was the OC at Montgomery even tho he didn't call the plays last season, he did however call them when Dan Gooch was coach. Cade Berryman was Estill's middle school coach and the special teams coach at the high school. Played at Estill. Other than that he has no coaching experience. Their was some on the staff that I feel should have gotten an interview. Austin Moore, Russ Swim (not exactly sure if he applied) and maybe one more. I'm really excited to see how the spread offense/option whatever coach Marcum brings, works at Estill. He will inherit a Trevor Jones type QB in Ty Niece. Let him sling it over the field or keep it. The double wing was great when you had a line that could block and open up holes but if you don't then you aren't getting anywhere with it so it was time for the ole double wing to go hide for awhile. I'm optimistic. I'm willing to give Coach Marcum time to see what he can do. I just hope he stays at Estill for awhile and not just a year or two.

Commodores travel to Jackson to take on the Breathitt County Bobcats this evening. Perry County Central comes in 5-7, losers of 3 straight and 5 of their last 6. Breathitt County comes in 5-5, losers of 3 straight but 3-3 in their last 6 games. Who wins this big show down?

We've reached the halfway point of the 2018/19 basketball season. The time of the season where everyone opens up Christmas presents and spends time with their families except for basketball teams, they are usually on the road heading to out of state tournaments for the most part. Several teams stay in state for in state tournaments. As much talent and tremendous teams the 14th region has, this holiday season hasn't been too kind to the 14th region. One might say it's even been a nightmare for the 14th region this holiday season, with that being said, let's look back at week 5. The 14th Region as a whole was 5-23 this holiday break with all of those coming in the Buckhorn Lake Christmas classic at Buckhorn and those being against region opponents, only one of those wins was an out of region win as Buckhorn defeated Cumberland Homeschool. That's a horrible stat and doesn't bold too well for the 14th region. 1) Breathitt County (5-5) Since taking over the #1 ranking spot a week ago,, the Breathitt County Bobcats have dropped 3 straight. They fell 69-66 in a thriller to West Carter last Saturday in the Rowan County KY Bank Challenge. As a Christmas present to his team, Coach John Noble took his Breathitt County Bobcats to Hilton Sandestin Florida to participate in the Hilton Sandestin Beach Blowout. Other than being on the beach, the trip wasn't too kind to the Bobcats as they had to sit on a bus for the whole trip down and they ended losing all of their games in the tournament. Falling to White Plains AL 54-52 and Charles Henderson AL 50-45. Breathitt County will put their #1 ranking on the line this Wednesday when they host the Commodores of Perry County Central. 2) Knott County Central (5-6): After starting the season off 5-1 in their first 6 games, the Patriots have dropped 5 straight. The Patriots took the short drive from Hindman into London this past week to participate in the Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge at South Laurel. Knott County Central opened up with Louisville Western. What would be a thrilling game, however the Patriots would come out on the losing end, 64-63. Moving on in the consolation bracket, Knott County Central would be handed their second loss of the tournament to Astronaut FL 62-60 in another thrilling/heart breaking loss. The Patriots would fight for 7th place against Roger Bacon OH, in a game that seen double overtime before the Patriots would finally falling 76-73. Can the Patriots rebound this week as they take to the road on Friday @ Middlesboro and Saturday @ Letcher County Central in a big 53rd district showdown. 3) Perry County Central (5-7): The Commodores continue to struggle as they have now gone 1-5 in their last 6 games including a current 3 game losing streak, all coming from the Rock Holiday Classic down in Orlando FL. McGill-Toolen AL would get the best of the Commodores in a 55-47 win. Perry Central would get throttled in their next game to Chapmanville Regional VA 71-51 and finally finishing last in the tournament, losing 54-49 to Ringgold GA. The toughness doesn't stop their as they will travel to Breathitt County and try to take down the #1 ranked Breathitt County Bobcats on Wednesday and then travel to Wayne County for a date with the Cardinals on Friday. 4) Hazard (9-3): The Bulldogs had the holiday season off and won't return to action until Thursday when they host Cordia and on Saturday when they travel to Wolfe County. 5) Letcher County Central (7-4): Letcher County Central dropped two this past weekend in the Sunshine classic at Daytona Beach FL. Losing 66-45 to Breckinridge County and 62-52 to North Bullitt. Despite the losses, the Cougars remain at #4 this week. Letcher County Central will have some big tests this week as they host both Leslie County and Knott County Central on back to back nights this Friday and Saturday. 6) Buckhorn (9-5): The Wildcats finished runner up in their own tournament this past weekend, defeating the Cumberland Homeschool team out of Corbin 86-43 and defeating Owsley County 65-53 to remain perfect in region play before falling 61-50 to the Harlan Green Dragons in the championship game of the Buckhorn Lake Christmas Classic. Buckhorn will have a very tough test this Saturday night when they host Powell County. However, the Wildcats must put that game aside and prepare for Red Bird on Friday. 7) Cordia (1-10): Cordia had the holiday season off and will return to action this Friday night when they travel to Hazard for a big region showdown. 8) Powell County (3-9): Since picking up those 3 back to back to back district wins, the Pirates have dropped 4 straight including all 3 games in the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County. Falling 54-40 to Middlesboro in the opening round, getting throttled by Rockcastle County by 30, 74-44, the same team that district rival, Estill County defeated earlier in the season, and finally falling to West Carter in overtime 75-66 to finish 8th in the Gateway Holiday Classic. Powell County will now turn their attention to Buckhorn and Bourbon County as they play both teams on back to back nights Friday and Saturday. Tough test for the Priates. Can they right the ship or will it just keep sinking? 9) Wolfe County (3-7): After losing both games in the Louisville Collegiate Classic last weekend, the Wolves only had one game this holiday season and that was a home game as they invited Louisville Holy Cross down into Campton from the big city of Louisville. The Wolves would suffer their 3rd straight loss as they fell 75-73 in overtime to the Indians. Wolfe County will travel to Beattyville on Thursday to take on the Lee County Bobcats and return home for a Saturday showdown with the Hazard Bulldogs. 10) Leslie County (1-7): Leslie County had the holiday season off as well and will return to action on Friday as they travel to Letcher County Central. 11) Estill County (2-11): The losses keep stacking up for the Engineers as they have now dropped 5 straight since their 76-27 win over Lee County. Estill County went to Owingsville over the weekend to participate in the Dan Swartz Classic at Bath County. It wasn't a very good trip as the Engineers would drop all 3 games, 82-59 to Lewis County in the opening round, 70-59 to Bath County in the consolation bracket and 68-61 to Adair County to finish 8th overall in the tournament. 12) Owsley County (6-6): Owsley County traveled to Buckhorn over the Christmas break, participating in the Buckhorn Lake Christmas Classic. Owsley County got off to a good start, picking up a 66-47 win over June Buchanan, the same team that defeated them earlier in the season, before falling in their next two games in the tournament, 65-53 to Buckhorn and 64-62 in overtime to Jackson City. 13) Jackson City - Will review next week. 14) June Buchanan (3-9): The Crusaders have now dropped 4 straight games since their win over Lee County. Two of those losses coming this past weekend in the Buckhorn Lake Christmas Classic. Losing 66-49 to Owsley County and 80-74 in overtime to Menifee County. 15) Lee County (2-11): The struggles continue for Lee County as they have now dropped 6 straight since their last week. They didn't have a good Christmas break either as they got throttled in both tournament games at Buckhorn. Losing 78-46 to Jackson City and 90-58 to Menifee County. 16) Riverside Christian (0-0): Still no games for the Rams this season.
