1. Greenup only has 8 Freshman (not enough for a Freshman team), 6 sophmores and 7 juniors (5 of the juniors are regular varsity players.) There are only 37 total players, 18 of which are seniors. The numbers are down for the underclassmen quite dramatically. Last year there were not enough freshman for a team either and the JV team played about 2 games before the rest of the season was cancelled. It is unrealistic to expect a 14-15 year old to come out in the heat all summer long, particpate in 3-4 hour practices all season, weightlift throughout the winter and never get a chance to play in a game. Having a winning season may help get the numbers out next year but the experience will not be there.

  2. I heard GC lost one of their O-lineman to a auto accident this weekend. He wasn't seriously injured, but bruised and sore - probably out this week. Anyone know if this is true?

Nick Tackett, 6'2 260 lb Junior, was injured in an auto accident Saturday. He will be out for two weeks. He will be replaced by either Poplin, 6'2 235 lb Senior, or Nichols, 6'5 220 Junior. Neither are as experienced as Tackett but will get the job done until he can get back on the field. We are just thankful the injuries were not more serious.

  3. My question is how good would Army, Navy or Air Force be without the Flexbone? You guys remember when Air Force was so good earlier this decade and then decided to go away from the Bone for a few years? Dobbs is very good for Navy, but how many games would they win in a Pro-style system? I think you have to go with your personnel and run a system that suits them. I think that is what Greenup seems to be doing.

Wasn't it kind of a shocker that they played Ashland so close?
I think the only shocking thing to the Greenup Fans was that they lost this one!

  4. Let the sore be what it's going to be. As long as this bunch leaves everything out on the field. I don't care about the score! If we somehow win this game it will be a great time in RAM history. If we lose by 40/50 oh well. Just play till the last play. No heads hanging. If we play our hearts out win or lose it will be a big building block for this team. "RAM PRIDE"

Nobody has ever expected the RAMS to ever win a game in this series. Thats why the Cat's play us. It's a game every Tomcat fan circles as a win. So as long as we leave the orange and black out on the field. Things will be fine. GO RAMS!

Well Said! My head says Ashland wins this one...But I would love to see the Rams come out on top! Good luck!

  5. Greenup County's secret weapon isn't so secret anymore. Congratulations to the Offensive Lineman!!

MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK: Greenup, Central surprise in openers

    Aaron Snyder

    The Independent

    Helmet Stickers

The QB alluded to it before. Greenup County offensive line, come get your stickers! (Don’t really. I actually don’t have any real ones.)

Four stickers: The Musketeers front five earned more than four stickers from the QB this week. How about a few cafeteria lunches from Brandon Marsh and Corey Lyle? Marsh and Lyle each ran well, but it started with the openings formed by the hefty O-line. http://dailyindependent.com/localsports/x2137443675/MONDAY-MORNING-QUARTERBACK-Greenup-Central-surprise-in-openers

  6. I think the Musketeers may be getting a little more respect after this game. They just need to step up and close the deal. I dont think anyone on the Ashland side of the field thought the game would be tied into the 4th quarter, that GC would be down only one score with 4 minutes left on the clock... or that the GC Offensive line would be as succesful as predicted...Greenup had over 300 rushing yards against a team that everyone thought (except loyal GC Fans) would walk away with the game. The turnovers in the last minutes of the game were the deciding factor in how this one turned out. Get some rest Musketeers and get back to work. Congratulations Tomcats.

  7. By the way, anyone heard from Coupon21 or the other GC posters? It is way too quiet on this thread. Usually by now, a GC thread would be on page 3 or 4.

Coupon21 is busy getting ready for Friday Night! I believe Greenup County is much improved. We have a core group of boys who have played together for years and some new talent. These boys have worked hard and grown tremendously under Coach Copley's leadership (both physically and mentally!) There is a lot of pressure this year for the boys to hit the ground running and have the best season in years. With 18 Seniors, this class is the largest GC has had in a long time (or will have for the foreseeable future.) It is NOW or 4-5 years from now. The team is confident but I do not believe the schedule gives them the best opportunity to build on that confidence. CAN Greenup beat Ashland? Never say never... I want the Musketeers to give the Tomcats the fight of their lives. I want the fans from both sides to walk out of the stadium thinking differently about Greenup County (regardless of the scoreboard.) I have been around this group of seniors since 2nd grade JFL They have the HEART and Determination to make great things happen!!!

    GO MUSKETEERS!!!

  8. Greenup started practice last night and the team is looking good. We have 20 seniors (most are returning players with a few new faces sprinkled in.) Expectations are high for this group. Copley has done a great job in the offseason and the boys have spent a lot of time in the weight room. GO MUSKETEERS!

  9. This is interesting stuff (and perhaps worthy of a thread itself---How (and how much) are athletics funded at your school? The gate receipts for Football, boys and girls basketball, Track and Baseball all go into a general athletic fund which is then split between all the sports. Consessions are handled by various boosters with those funds going directly to the respective boosters. (including Band and Cheerleading) The school funds the coaches salaries.

  10. I agree that cheerleading should be considered a sport. Our athletic boosters do fund all sports (and cheerleading, as it is not considered a sport at the moment), though not equally, as not all sports have equal expenses. Football gets more than any other sport, but still probably not exactly what it should get.

Our school does not fund any sport (or cheerleading) except for paying the salaries of coaches.
And here I was thinking only Greenup was stingy with the Funds!

  11. I would love for Cheerleading to be considered a sport. I am sure not everyone agreees, BUT it depends on the school. At Greenup it is all about competition. They have participated in the UCA national competition every year for 30 years (and have brought home 13 national titles.) They compete in regional and state competitions. I have nieces who cheer and know how much money they raise and spend annually. The school does not fund them in any way. All their funds are raised by boosters. In comparison, Greenup funds the football program with $7,500 per year. The bulk of the funding comes from its boosters. Again, having cheerleading classified as a sport would help with title 9. The football booster to cheerleading booster monies would be about even.

  12. If a player plays F, JV an V in one sport then they are counted 3 times as a participant.

If cheerleaders were counted in Title IX money then there would be no way the boys would outspend the girls. Cheerleaders spend more money than any sport excluding the coach's salary.

This is so true! (Especially Greenup County Cheerleaders). If it was ruled a sport all of our Title IX worries would disapear!
