  1. For all of you guys who have responded to my question, when and how did you decide to play football?

My brother had played 7 years before me. But, I decidedI wanted to play when on the playground after school in the fifth grade I saw another teachers kid come by with some actual game pads and a a helmet and was wowed! I'd drag six or seven kids at a time around on that play ground while carrying the ball. After seeing that shiny helmet and those pads decided that I would definitely play when I got my first chance in the sixth grade. (There was no youth league around home then and sixth grade was the beginning.) Of course I became a lineman and never carried the ball. My poor mom had to sit through 13 years of football between me and my brother and now she has sat through eleven more so far with my boys and at least four to go.

  2. Looks like some boys from Rockcastle got a little ink in the Louisville Courier Journal the other day!:thumb::clap:

:DBoth boys are juniors and the thing is...the entire junior class is very talented. These two have just had the opportunity to play more than the others. Go ROCK!:D

Class of 2012 state football rankings

The early indications are extremely positive about the Class of 2012 football prospects across the state of Kentucky.

While the class doesn't appear to be as deep as the Class of 2011 there are several prospects that - at this point - project to be high-level Division I players.

I'm only going to rank the top 10 in this class because there will be so much change between now and the first few weeks of the season. I will give you other names just not ranked past 10.

The other names are listed in alphabetical order and the photo to the left is of Mason County's Josh Harris.

    The list:

1.Josh Harris, LB-RB, Mason County, 6-2, 185 - Harris was all over the field as a sophomore, rushing for over 1,300 yards and amassing 115 tackles. He has perfect combination of big-time athleticism, speed and a high football IQ.

2.Zeke Pike, QB, Dixie Heights, 6-5, 225 - Never taken a varsity snap under center but has shown so much potential at camps and combines. Major colleges love him.

3.Travis Elliott, RB, Ryle, 5-11, 210 - Elliott has been on the radar since he made an impact during his freshman season. A hard-nosed runner and very intense.

4.Patrick Towles, QB, Fort Thomas Highlands, 6-5, 230 - Was solid under center as a sophomore in part-time role, throwing for more than 1,100 yards. He's the grandson of Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning.

5.Adam Wing, QB, Rowan County, 6-4, 195 - Completed over 50 percent of his passes as a sophomore. Is bigger and stronger and should have a monster season.

6.Joe Manley, OL, Bowling Green, 6-6, 305 - If he keeps progressing at the current rate will be a high, high Division I kid with great size.

7.Rob Lewis, OL-DL, Pulaski Southwestern, 6-4, 275 - A lot of big-time schools have already inquired, including Ohio State, Virginia Tech and Nebraska.

8.Josh Walls, RB-FS, Scott County, 5-10, 180 - Will likely wind up leading virtually every record at Scott County High School before his career is complete.

9.Vincent Miller, WR, Henry Clay, 5-11, 175 - Played a limited role last season but has been a star on the camp scene this spring.

10.Adam Reynolds, LB, Trinity, 6-1, 175 - One of several big-time young prospects for the Shamrocks. Reynolds called the defenses last season as a sophomore and will be the leader of what should be a top defense this fall.

    •Brandon Ball, OL-DL, North Laurel, 6-4, 305

  3. I work with a guy who son's will be playing for Southern. He told me that he has heard rumblings that if the numbers don't improve there is a possibility of there being no team this upcoming season.

I sincerely hope that this is not the case. I believe that if this is the case, then the parents of the players need to get together and discuss exactly what they want out of their football team/ school/ coaches/ administration. Everyone is going to have to get together to move that program forward and killing the program (as what happened at Berea Community) is nearly impossible to overcome. (Berea did overcome it) I certainly hope that this is just jawing by parents as I couldn't imagine not having a football program in the school where my kids would be attending. Good luck to Southern's kids. The interest in football is rooted in Berea in the youth football programs that I discussed earlier, but, for some reason it doesn't carry on over into high school. The lack of interest isn't just in football in Berea it seems....there isn't a senior league in baseball in Berea anymore. The kids have to travel over to Richmond if they want to play senior league baseball.

  4. Anytime a team has a loss like Rico, it will be hard to replace him. I think Madison So. will be a better team this year and will win 5 or 6 games and have a shot at making the play-offs. They need to get more kids involved in Football, a school this size should have 50-60 kids dressed out.

I was talking to a parent the other day in (where else?) Walmart. I'm hearing the numbers are hurting quite a bit again this year and I don't understand it because Berea has a youth football program that will usually have around five teams in ages 10-14 competing and nearly that many in the younger age group. There is also an all star football traveling group that one particularly active coach spends a lot of time with going around the state playing games. My youngest played for him in Owensboro year before last after Thanksgiving and had a lot of fun. The parent told me how many kids he heard was playing and it was fewer than 30. I hope they get several more out this summer to practice. The freshman class that is coming in had a pretty good team a couple of years ago when we played them and I hope for the boys' sake that some of that talent makes it through to the team this year.

  5. Sometimes my kids will get a good laugh when we happen to have the radar gun we use to clock pitching with us in the truck and we "clock" the jokers that are flying by us with the radar detectors. They will hit the brakes and look everywhere for the cop....then mash the gas to take off, to only get "clocked" again. It can be pretty entertaining!!

  6. Did she go back to Somerset?

My son says she went to Rowan County with her family and that he had heard that her father may have gotten a job up there. I saw on one of the Somerset boys basketball threads that her brother would be missed at Somerset this year. It was known that she had friends and family in the Morehead area last year when ROCK played Rowan Co. in the football playoffs. She seemed like a good kid, best of luck to her and her family up there.

  7. The loss of Rico Brown will either hurt them or benefit them by making the rest of the team step up and try to fill a very large void together. They have a two year starter at quarterback and several skilled position starters coming back. The backs are going to have to encourage the linemen into wanting to block for them. I know this from experience that a cocky back who throws off on their linemen in the huddle when things are going bad will find themselves even deeper in the hooey on the next play:sssh:, as good linemen will block their guts out for a person they respect. They will have to play more "team" football and each player will need to get stronger not only physically, but mentally as well because the Southern players will have to shake the monkey off their backs that keeps their heads down. That means a more optimistic "Let's get out there and whip somebody together attitude", rather than the more common and easier approach of, "If HE had played this way we would of won". Or, "If the coach would have played me and used these plays more, we would have won." I really root for this team as they have the players in place to win some football games. I know several of the kids on this team and think the world of many of them. I don't know the coaching staff, but, I think that if they will go in optimistically and promote a teamwork atmosphere without the screaming and "military" style I have heard they sometimes impress upon the players, I think they can make a pretty good year out of this season. By military (a quote by several players and past players I've heard) for example, I've heard they engage the players in full windsprints on pregame days. The coaches also need to earn the boys respect, (A high five on a heads up play and a slap on the back for a good hit goes a really long way) and get them to buy into a team concept where a little yelling doesn't hurt when applied where needed.(The good Lord knows that some of these kids need attitude adjustments at times.) I truly wish the Eagles the best in the upcoming season and hope they win several games. (Except one...:D) GOOD LUCK BOYS ON A SUCCESFUL SEASON!!!:thumb::thumb:

  8. To be honest...I'm not certain what we got. I've just heard the boys talking about the new kids occasionally. No QB's I'm pretty sure. I do know that one freshman is supposed to be a good looking kid athlete wise. One kid from Lincoln County will be eligible this year that set out last year...or so I think. I'll have to ask the boys sometime.

  9. My kids love how they walk down the stands.

Who is new on our schedule this year?

    Any new kids move in?

The schedule is the same as last year except for playing Danville instead of Boyle in the Bob Allen Pigskin Classic first game of the season. All home/away games have flipped.

I think that there a few new kids that have moved in, but I'm not sure of the impact they will play. We will see with the first practices who pans out.

  10. The players still come down through the crowd and from seeing it in person this year, I can't stand it. I never played but in the four years that I was a manager, there was nothing like running through a spirit line that stretched from the back of the endzone to about midfield. I get the idea but dont like it. I did like the script "Rock" that was painted on the field. Hope they never go away from the script Rock on a white shell helmet. lol.

I hope to make down to Rockcastle for more than just one game this year. I will for sure be at whatever game falls in line with Northern Kentucky University's fall break...lol...that's usually the only game I get to see each year unless they make a deep run in the playoffs.

Hope you get to see more than one game this year. If not this year(chickens before they hatch)....I feel really, really good about next year. But, I'm certainly not looking past this year, they are just a little green in places and may shape up nicely.

  11. We must be behind in the QB situation. I am sure we will get a good one. had to go to Indiana and Ohio to see family. Glad to be home. Does your son still play baseball? We are not doing too hot this year on the diamond. Any info on where some of the players are going to college from last year?

Yes...he still plays...pitches tonight against Madison Southern in JV. From what I understand about the boys going to college for football, Big Thacker and Bishop are going to Campbellsville University to play. As far as baseball, Perkins is in the rotation for Western Kentucky as a pitcher and doing quite well while Bullock went to Union College but things did not work out as well. All four are good boys.

This year the baseball team is very young with two or sometimes three varsity starters being freshmen. A very young team that seems to have trouble giving up the big inning. They did beat West Jessamine this last weekend and I hear West Jess was ranked in the top ten of the state

Back to the topic of QB...I think it will solve itself in the first two weeks of football this summer.

  12. The first game is Danville and I'm almost certain that is on a Saturday...not sure about the scrimmages yet. Good luck on the new job for the wife and the move.:thumb: Sorry about the long wait on the response...been out of town for the last week.

Sorry for the delay also, took 2 weeks off work to go on vacation to visit family and friends up north and realx.

How did spring ball go, have we found a QB yet? Any word on scrimmage yet?

Spring ball went fairly well. Mostly workouts for the secondary as many of the starting linemen play baseball/ run track and weren't able to attend. The quarterback question will not be answered until all candidates are able to practice this next summer.

  13. I hope to make it to at least 2 games this year. Are any games on Saturday this year and do we scrimmage at home again?

The first game is Danville and I'm almost certain that is on a Saturday...not sure about the scrimmages yet. Good luck on the new job for the wife and the move.:thumb: Sorry about the long wait on the response...been out of town for the last week.

  14. Good post Except Southwestern and Whitley did not win their districts.

If I was mistaken about it then I stand corrected...I was pretty certain that they did. If not...who won the Whitley district? Southwestern district?:idunno: I was pretty sure that Pulaski and Southwestern were not in the same district. And Harlan County was in the Southwestern district, but got beat early in the season and revenge in the regionals.

  15. Well...it looks like I'll be the one making the first comment on this one and it's gonna be a long one. Rockcastle had a disappointing season last fall when compared to the expectations of them and the high standards set for them. The first losing record in over twenty years was pretty tough to swallow for the team and coaches as a whole. The bright side of things was this:

They lost three games in the final 28 seconds or overtime in three games. (Pulaski, Southwestern and Knox Central)

That means that they were less than five bad plays from being seven and three.

Three of the overall losses came to 5A teams that were district winners (Whitley, Pulaski, Southwestern)

In the three games lost late in the game, critical plays cost the pass defense and not so much the run defense. (Before some of you hop on this, yes Rockcastle did uncharacteristically give up several rushing yards in the Pulaski and Southwestern games...but the games were lost on passing plays.)

    So...what to work on...

The boys in the secondary are obviously going to have to step up. The 2009 version secondary was green as they had lost the entire secondary to graduation. 2010 will also be a bit green with the loss of Todd and one particularly unsung defensive player in Bullens. The Bullens boy didn't get enough credit this last season for the little things he did as well as his dependability IMO. Hopefully a solid group of future juniors will step up this next year. I see Reams, Childress, Rowe, Causey, Luna and senior Baker defending the secondary this next year. All are pretty sound players and they work hard in the weight room.

The LB positions are going to be occupied by returning starters Saylor and Bradley. Both are hard working football players that, if able to stay healthy will be fine.

The defensive line will be anchored by the younger Thacker boy, Dylan. The defensive line will sorely miss All District lineman Cole Abney and his leadership ability as well as his strength this next year as well as "Big" Thacker and his heart. Dillingham and his "meanstreak" will also be missed. Lake and the twin Thomason boys will be pretty sound in the middle as they have all had starting experience. The Thomason boys are pretty tough kids and would soon as whip each other as someone else so they'll stick.:D Senior Allen will have to step up his game at end and can be a very intense player.

On the offensive side the big question mark is in the backfield at QB. The Bishop boy will be hard to replace as a three year starter, but I see junior Brock coming in and making an impact. Behind him is freshman McPhetridge a future freshman that is coming back from an injury as an eighth grader. The lack of experience at QB will be the tale for the offense this next year as well as attempting to replace Todd at reciever and Abney and Thacker on the line. Thacker will be very hard to replace on offense for his hole opening ability. The offensive line will be returning starters senior Dylan Thacker, junior Lake with two years of starting varsity experience under his belt, junior Adams, and junior N. Thomason. That leaves one spot open for some serious competion this summer between mostly sophmores and possibly freshmen that want to work for it. Wide reciever will also be a tossup with IMO Childress as the frontrunner and Allen and S. Thomason in the hunt as well. As I said earlier about the Bullens boy, he will be sorely missed and on the offensive side as well. Rowe (2100 yards rushing last year) and Saylor (700 yards rushing rushing last year) will be in a sound backfield as well as Bradley and all three have lots of starting experience.

It will be another tough schedule for the Rock boys this year as they pretty much have the same schedule as last year. Instead of power Boyle County to open with, they have power Danville who is also smarting from a weak year and will be out to prove something this year. The boys have worked hard on the weights this winter and you can tell it by looking at them. They have a strong freshman class coming in that if not for the loss of the QB early in the pre-season would have made some noise as eighth graders last year IMO. If the junior leadership comes through as I hope it will this next season, I feel that they will get back on the winning track, though they will probably have to take some lumps while seasoning up the defensive secondary and the QB/wide reciever positions. A lot of "ifs" this next year...good luck to the Rock boys on a successful season in 2010!:thumb::thumb::thumb:
