Is that what they do at the KBA during the summer?

My school has a camp where 10-12 teams come to play during the summer. Our assignor will get us officials; we pay them about 1/2 of what they get during the regular season and the assigning secretary usually comes to evaluate. We couldn't get officials if we didn't pay them SOMETHING. Because I am VERY good friends with a couple of assigning secretaries. It's almost like the inmates are running the asylum because the assignors are scared of losing an official.

1) Get a rule book and pass a written test, all the while using a rule book to complete it? 2) In talking to former coaches who run these summer camps, officials are always compensated when they come to summer camps. 3) Never talked to an official who was critiqued by a coach, HS or college, much less an NBA official. 4) Never seen or heard of an official losing a game for kicking a rule. When have you seen it? 5) The officials I know in 3 different regions never "consume their own" Most are friends and would never throw each other under the bus. Looks like our experiences with officials are very different. In answering your questions, again I have never seen an official lose a game for any reason. So, if there is no consequence for poor performance, there is no accountability. For part 2, I have been on the bench and in a number of meetings with assignors and even when the assignors admitted that the official was wrong, it was quickly followed with "He's one of our best and our numbers are down". And I have seen those same offficials in the boys or girls state tournaments. Now, what are your qualifications?

Ok...I am obviously missing something in your eyes. Explain the process of becoming an official to me. Also, explain the process of accountability to me...someone stated they don't get to do post season games, which is patently false because I have seen it with my own eyes. And lastly, explain to me how poor performance is not accepted? I am ready to be enlightened!!

lol. I can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking my head up a cow's butt, but I'd rather take a butcher's word for it. The fact that you can't won't recognize that some officials are incompetent speaks volumes about your basketball knowledge.

I actually agree with you ...it IS a job. In another thread someone else said it wasn't a regular job, so I chose hobby. But the fact that you are getting paid for a service, have no formal training, people readily accept your mistakes, and have no accountability process in place is absurd to me.

Then why shouldn't we expect them to be in shape, do a good job, and have some accountability?

He shouldn't have to "go back to work to show them how it's done" It's not unreasonable to expect a level of competency when paying someone for a service. Add on to that the fact that there is NO accountability to speak of and it's a recipe for disaster. ANd don't give me the "ratings" junk. Means nothing in most regions. It's a good ole boy network in most regions where the same ones get the post season work regardless of performance.

Let the Big Business of the KHSAA foot the bill for training and payment for games. Maybe then they could recruit more officials, hold them more accountable, all the while taking some of the financial burden off the schools. What's Julian's salary?

More training. Or find another "hobby".

That's a fact. They happened JUST EXACTLY that way. You can believe what you want to believe. And read some of the other posts Sparky...I don't want to officiate. These guys do. And they're getting paid. Competence should be a given.

A district seed game, that could prevent a team from advancing to regionals, and losing out on that money generated from being in the regional tournament. Big difference in most districts in the 1/4 game and the 2/3 game.

Posted this in another thread. Just 2 examples and I could go on and on. I saw a coach standing in his coaching box, coaching his team during a game in the 16th. . An official comes running down the floor and trips over the coach. Demands the coach sit down. Coach refuses. Official gave him a T and said "now you will" Same ref called district finals that year. Saw an official in the 11th at the LexCath tournament call a T on a coach 22 seconds into the game for saying "she walked". Saw that ref in the state tournament that year.

Not getting post season games is minor in comparison to what bad officials can cost a team during the regular season. And all you hear from assignors is that there is a shortage of referees. That means if you can walk and chew gum, you have a great chance of calling post season games in some capacity. At the very least you will probably get some district games. I am saying that A LOT of them are. That's who. And I guarantee I am as much or more qualified as you to make that determination.

They're getting paid, they should be competent. Their incompetence impacts other people.

I am primarily talking about protecting the shooter. Big kids get a tougher whistle than smaller ones do. And you hear officials say all the time we are going to call "hand checks" and "physical play in the post"... Its a foul one time down the floor and not the next. Consistency is a huge problem.

Ok...we'll all tell our bosses that our job is "really hard sometimes" so we aren't going to perform today. Let's see how that works out.

Which is why people get so upset. There has to be a "way" of calling. A foul is a foul. A travel is a travel. A charge is a charge. There should be universal training and repurcussions for incompetent officials.

Well hell, since there is so much subjectivity there is no need for a rule book. Let the officials use their own judgment on what is a block or charge. They miss that one at all levels. Traveling? Not if he doesn't think so....
