I was part of the hiring process when we hired Coach Hicks and I did a little research to. Coach Kinmons career coaching record was 148-171 if you count the 09-10 season. It was 138-155 if you don't. Kinmon had 6 out of 7 losing seasons in his last seven years. He was 66-51 in his first four seasons but that was with the help of Shafer, Jones, Plunkett, and a few other good players. He coached here 11 years and most programs would have let him go a lot sooner. One of the reasons we hired Coach Hicks was what he accomplished in a three year span at Bath County. This program was not in good shape and anyone could look at the last seven years and see that.

 

There our a couple good points in there Jaws. However, i do not think it is fair to count 09-10 season as Kinmon left at Christmas Break with a winning record (5-4). It is not his fault administration made him quit in middle of season and they went 5-12 with him not at the helm. So let's count the last 6 years of his 10 full seasons. You are correct 5 of the 6 seasons were losing records. However, he played tougher competition and did make the regional tournament 3 of those 6 seasons. It is people like you and BGCat that don't get it. I personally know Kinmon and he always said Players win games and Coaches lose them. He always took responsibility for the losses and always gave praise to the players win they won! I hope Coach Hicks stands up as strong for GCHS as Coach Kinmon tried to do.

If your qualified to be part of the hiring process you should know that under Khsaa guidelines when you watch a December workout of student athletes from another high school at Sherman elem or if you know a student athlete is at open gym and is enrolled in your beloved high school illegally while living just a few doors down from you and your new coach you are obligated to report that to the Khsaa.

I'm not against either of these coaches, but from the outside looking in, it looks like both coaches have had some success. Kinmon won coach of the year twice. He took a team to the regional finals. He must have done something right to accomplish that. Maybe scheduling was not his strength. It appears to me Coach Hicks has had a strategy in rekindling the Grant program. It appeared to me that last year he tried to instill a never quit attitude, develop a faster pace game, and develop individual offensive skills. Their defense became very aggressive. This year, he controlled the ball and got more shots for his scorers. He improved their defense and made them the strongest rebounding short team in the region. He also scheduled appropriately for a young team. They needed time to learn and grow. I think there is reason to praise both coaches.

Good post. I do think scheduling was one of Kinmon's strengths. He wanted to play the best and possibly beat the best. His players got more recognition by playing the tougher teams (even though they might have lost) than they would have if they were playing a soft schedule. I compliment him for playing tough schedules year in and year out.
