Mercer County 40 Nelson County 28

Featured Replies

Nelson got off to a 16-0 halftime lead, but disintegrated in the second half in a flurry of turnovers.

Mercer's offense seem to get a big lift from the QB change.

Cardinals got a big night from Trey White, but it wasn't enough as they fall to 0-7.

Congrats to Mercer or their first win of the season. Their starting qb JT Long didn't start tonight due to an injured hand the the Titans started Russell Sims at qb. Both are sophomores. Russell has never taken a snap at qb in his entire life. Apparently JT was able to play in the second half and the Titans put up 40 points. The Titans also had their best running back, James Johnson, back in the lineup and I believe he had 3 touchdowns. Big win for Mercer. It'd be nice to see them build off of this win and continue to improve.

I also believe Mercer abandoned their offense for Russell Sims and went to the Wing T, they brought JT back in at the startof the 2nd half and went to their offense and rolled. Looks like they decided to run the ball a bit more. I guess having James Johnson back makes it easier to establish the run. Good win Mercer, keep building.

^ They beat West Jess earlier this season.

I wasn't aware that Sims was their backup. In the first half, they actually did more running, but they were out of sync. Nelson's run defense has been porous this season, so I guess that's why they switched it up. In the second half, they opened things up a bit with the pass, and that helped open things for the running game.

Not 100 percent sure, but I think Nelson had six turnovers in the second half. The Cardinals were driving early in the second half to try and go up by three scores, but Mercer picked off a pass to end the drive and scored at the other end, and Nelson never got the momentum back.

My fault. I remember a parent saying last week that they hoped they would just win one game. I assumed they were winless. Who would have thought a parent who has been at every game didn't know they already won one. Wow.

PP,

It's amazing what having a kid in the backfield that can take to the house anytime he touches it can do for an offense, isn't it? Great win for Mercer's kids, Coach Rains and his staff.

No doubt. I don't know t he whole story on him this year. Durability issues maybe? He was dressed at the LexCath game last week but he didn't play while I was there. I know he practiced all week this week so his health must be the reason we haven't seen him much. That's just speculation on my part though. It's easy to see he makes a huge difference.

Johnson has been playing on two sprained ankles all season. This was first week of the season when he actually was able to practice all week.

Conj: to Coach Rains his Staff and Kids. Good win, hope things start falling into place now.

I was incorrect about the turnovers -- Nelson had four, three in the second half. It seemed like a lot more because they recovered three of their own fumbles.

I'd like to know how many flags were thrown in that game. I've never hears of that many being tossed....on both teams!!

Seemed like about 30 combined.
