You are correct that North Oldham and Oldham County had never played each other before this season.

The North and South rivalry goes back to just about day one in 2003 when North first opened.

We are still a very young program.

 

Perhaps Knute will clarify with greater accuracy.

 

IN MY OPINION the rivalry has gotten very intense between the two schools the last few seasons for a lot of reasons.

The North Program began to emerge as formidable and at times a dominate adversary several seasons ago and that certainly did not sit well with the more established guard around the area. The past few seasons South has seen a definite upturn in their program as well.

Throw in very close proximity to each other, a swelling of involvement and passion by students and the community , great facilities at both, quality coaching at both , good football being played and you have the ingredients for ....well there's no other way to put it, the development of a very competitive dislike of each other.

I am also the first to admit that the recent success of North's athletics have put a noticeable confidence in the once insecure and fledgling program.

Both teams will contend for their districts...

 

The two teams are 3-3 against each other and began play in 2005. South won in 2005 (56-0) and 2006 (49-0) before watching North reel off three straight wins in the series. South won, 29-7, last year in Crestwood.

 

North has played a schedule that most years would be brutal (Henry County, Oldham County, Christian Academy of Louisville, and Elizabethtown). E-town appears to be definitely down, Henry is struggling. But Oldham and CAL both appear capable of finishing with very good seasons; although Oldham is 1-3, they are just a few plays from being 3-1.

 

North is just 42-51 overall since 2003; however, the Mustangs - after going 0-10 in Billy Martin's first season - have been an impressive 35-17 over the past 4+ seasons, including district titles in 2008 and 2010, and a regional runner-up finish to Central last year.

 

The Mustangs' potent rushing attack is averaging nearly 300 yards per game, led by Zach Evans, who already owns every North rushing record. Josh Smith and Jacob Raymond round out the three-headed rushing monster, and both have 100 yard games to their credit. The O-Line is physically impressive and experienced, with everyone back from last year - and no seniors on the line! The biggest question mark is on defense, where the Mustangs have given up large chunks of real-estate - but, to their credit, they have come up with stops when they've had to.

 

South (3-1) is the pre-season favorite in their district. They play district second-choice Conner next week, meaning South will play county rivals Oldham County and North Oldham, and chief district rival Conner, in back-to-back-to-back Fridays...

 

Like North, South is blessed with a plethora of talented backs. Michael Gray - who missed the first two weeks while recovering from a pre-season concussion, and was not on the field in the Dragons' lone loss at North Hardin - has blistering speed. Steward Williams is quick, strong, and is a superb downfield receiver. Marc Stephens is an all-purpose back who has the ability to go the distance on any play as either a runner or a receiver. Junior quarterback Jack Sherry has a strong arm, quick feet, and is big and strong. Senior wide receiver Jacob Lamb is one of the best in the metro Louisville area.

 

Like North, South's primary question mark appears to be on the defensive side of the ball, as the Dragons have given up a lot of points, and struggled to stop the run against Bullitt Central, North Bullitt, North Hardin, and Oldham County. But the linebacking corps is quick, aggressive, and tends to come up with a lot of takeaways.

Sherry of South Oldham is getting some looks and is likely the one invited. He's a big, strong kid (about 6'5") with a big-time arm.

Any fan of Old School Football would most likely really enjoy this game. I personally would rather watch a system like North's than all the spread offenses in the world.
