Missouri Law: Teachers Cannot Be "Friends" With Students

Featured Replies

I'd enforce the "leave your door open" policy that is probably common today. The only time I'd require a witness would be in disciplinary cases or cases where certain parts of the human body were involved.

I'd require school email to be used. No personal email communication with students.

I'd ban FB friendships.

I'd have to think long and hard about texting. Not sure on that one.

I would then show that FB is not the end-all-be-all to any teacher that doubted me.

There is plenty of technology out there that can accomplish EXACTLY what good right-minded teachers are trying to accomplish.

If they continued to fight me we'd have a come-to-Jesus discussion.

Your rebuttal?

You didn't ask me, but I wouldn't work for you with the type of attitude that you've displayed in this thread.

Best post in this thread, by far. :thumb: I've worked for micro-managers and I've worked for administrators that focused on the important things (education) and held staff to professional standards. You and I know which of those groups does the better job.

Why do you seem to insist it's mutually exclusive?

Man, do you know how many offices/classrooms are islotated and not within earshot of anyone? Having the door opened or closed would not matter in these circumstances. And there's some situations where you want the door closed because of the content matter that no one else needs to hear. If you are a school personnel (administrator, counselor, teacher, family resource, etc), I would think you would know this.

Can't believe you would ban personal email but are not sure about texting. What is the difference?

Exactly. I've had students need to tell me something in confidence, as I was an adult that they felt cared about them and had rapport with them. Luckily for me, my school does not have a "no doors closed" policy.

I'd have no problem with that. I'd even write you a strong letter of recommendation to help you find another position to find a place where students would benefit from your abilities and where you would feel more comfortable.

Sadly, I can't just look out for one teacher regardless of how strong they are.

You can't micro-manage and find the time necessary to focus on what IS important and how to achieve those goals.

If I did nothing else but micro-manage then you would be correct. How much time would it take for me to make a rule saying no FB ? 2 minutes? It doesn't take long to put rules in.

Those rules IMO would give me MORE time to focus on better education and making sure I've got the right teachers in place.

It's not one teacher. You would not retain quality teachers with a dictorial type of approach that you are promoting.

BTW, will you ban all phone calls, too? One on one interactions in public? If not, what is the difference between those and Facebook messaging or texting?

In response to your earlier post, if I saw questionable behavior from a student on his/her Facebook post, I'd report it to the parent or proper authority. I won't go into specifics, but rest assured I have done exactly that.

Why are you and others failing to see that I've already said multiple times that you can't eliminate ALL types of contact?

I've yet to make any blanket statements about communications yet you and others keep bringing up specifics. There is no easy or popular answer.

BTW TB&G besides the issue of FB what other edicts would you disagree with and why? I'm always open to considering alternatives.

.

BTW banning FB interaction makes one "dictorial?" One rule you do not agree with and you label someone a dictator?

Iv'e talked to to other teachers like you that I consider to be strong. There is no consensus on this issue so I do not believe you would be taking all of the other good teachers out the door with you.

Why do you feel that you should eliminate one type of one on one contact and not another? This is a serious question. If you are concerned about liability, what makes one worse than another?

It's not feasible and it's imprudent. Sometimes one-on-one is key. Other times it's not. FB is not and is a simple one with reasonable alternatives.

Clyde, it's the very attitude that you take about all of it. I've worked for a variety of administrators over the years and have seen quite a few, also. I can tell you that you're not going to have a truly successful school if you're approach is as a dictator. If your approach is to discuss the issue with your staff and decide what to do AS A STAFF, then you might get the action that you originally want. If you don't, well, you might not have had the right action in mind, anyway.

Clyde, you can dig your heels in as much as you want. FB can be a reasonable method to reach students if used appropriately, bottom line. As a reactionary (and imaginary) administrator, take it away, if you like.

I'll ask my principal (who knows that I use Facebook) why he doesn't make such a rule and get back with you.

What attitude? I'm against FB. That's an attitude? FB makes me a dictator? Broad brush?

"As a staff" has its place. However, any leader that can't make the hard decisions without getting approval is not a leader. Take everything into account and make your own decision. I've asked you 50 times why FB is the only way to communicate and you've yet to answer other than "that's where they are." If I was in a staff meeting and proposed my thought and that was the only response I got I'd have no reason to change my mind.

Take a step back and look at what I've said and tell me what warrants a "dictator" label? So far you've just got FB.
