Especially when two of those wins are in the post-season.

Montgomery Co gives up only 2 runs in the post-season. That's quite impressive.

Montgomery County (32-3) banged out six of their 11 hits off Clark pitcher Amy Haggard in their first at-bat, and took advantage of two Clark miscues to produce all of their offensive production in the opening fame.

 

Clark coach Matt Puckett said the Lady Indians' first-inning outburst was the difference in the outcome.

“They came out and hit the ball and we made some errors,” the first-year coach said. “Against a team like (Montgomery County), you give a team like that a little breathing room, and they're going to suck the air out of you. That's what they did.”

Haggard allowed just five hits through the last five innings, with two of those coming in the sixth inning. Haggard fanned two batters and led Clark's offense with a pair of singles.

 

Clark nearly avoided a shutout in the seventh inning, but left runners stranded at first and third to end the contest after reaching on a pair of Montgomery County miscues.

 

“We never could get into rhythm,” Puckett said. “Once they got that lead, we never did quit, but we never did find the rhythm and hit the ball like we did (against Bishop Brossart).”

 

Puckett added that his team didn't show signs of fatigue following the 9-0 shutout of Bishop Brossart in the semifinals on Tuesday night.

 

“They (Montgomery County) came out tonight and they were the better team,” he said. “We just took one on the chin. They jumped us early and that's what we were wanting to do and it just didn't happen. We got down and just couldn't fight back.”

Montgomery County pitcher Erin Charles scattered four hits and finished with eight strikeouts. Charles has allowed just two runs in her team's first five games in the postseason.

 

“She threw the ball well,” Puckett said. “Their coach prepared them well and they played a nice game.”

The Lady Cards finished with a 28-10 mark under Puckett and the game was the final contest for seniors Caitlin Collins, Alli Martin, Haggard, Shamy Williams and Megan Bealert.

 

“These girls had an excellent year,” Puckett said. “You hate to see it end this way, but the five seniors have given me everything you could possibly ask. They're a great bunch and you couldn't have a greater bunch with my first year coming in.”
