36th district

Featured Replies

Can someone please explain to me why the 36th district is the only one in NKY and possibly KY that doesn't have seeding in the tournament? I was told that it had to do with a vote between the teams in the district. That the majority had to vote for seeding and that it will never happen, but doesn't it seem unfair to the other districts? Why doesn't the state say that all district tournaments have to be seeded to make it even across the board?

2 different questions posed above:

1 - Q: Given the rule, why don't they seed? A: Newport, Dayton & Bellevue think they have a better chance, year in / year out, of making it to the Region via blind draw than via seeding. So long as NCC & HHS end up on 1 side of the bracket, 1 of the 3 is guaranteed an appearance in the Regional. Not sure what would have happened if all 5 teams were forced to play home & home for seeding purposes.

According to http://www.khsaa.org

* - Bellevue was 11-16, 1-3 in the 36th (Wins against Villa Madonna (3), Covington Latin, Dayton, Silver Grove (2), Mason Co., Ludlow, SK & Gallatin Co.)

* - Dayton was 6-16, 1-6 in the 36th (Wins against Covington Latin (2), Silver Grove, Bellevue, Villa Madonna & Ludlow)

* - Newport was 7-14, 5-1 in the 36th (Wins against Villa Madonna, Dayton (2), HHS, St. Henry & Bellevue (2))

* - HHS was 6-29, 1-3 in the 36th (Wins against Walton Verona, Boone Co., Silver Grove, Villa Madonna, St. Henry & Dayton)

* - NCC was 21-9, 5-0 in the 36th

Predicting from these records, NCC would have been the #1 seed, Newport the #2 seed, HHS the #3 seed and Bellevue & Dayton at #4 & #5. Would have made for a very interesting #2 v. #3 game between Newport and HHS. As it happened, 3 run rule games to put NCC and Newport in the District Final.

2 - Q: Why doesn't KHSAA require all Districts to seed? A: I have no idea.

Actually, if you look at the khsaa website's posting of the 9th region standings, the seeding would have been NCC, Bellevue (2), Newport (3), Dayton (4), and HHS (5). So, really this is the closest the blind draw has probably come to correctly "seeding" them.

I get why Newport, Dayton, and Bellevue would feel that way. I personally wouldn't want to get into the regional tournament that way, but I get why you would want your kids to have that feeling if they could. I guess my main point is why wouldn't this be a thing that the state would take care of to make it even across the board. I think in the grand outlook of things it hurts the 9th region, because there is already talk on other threads about how easy the team that draws the 2 seed out of the 36th will have it. In a tournament where pitching is key, if you draw that 2 seed from the 36th you can save your 1 or 2 pitcher until later in the tournament. This seems to be a huge advantage and something that has happened in the past couple of years with the sinking of the 36th district.

That goes purely by number of wins. JPA is right, you use their district record to determine seeding. Newport beat Bellevue and Highlands so they'd be number 2; however, Bellevue and Highlands never played so it would be tough to determine who's 3. If the seeding games mattered in this district, I'm sure they'd have done everything to get them in.

I think all districts should seed. But whether they seed or use a blind draw, I think all the districts in the same region should use the same format. Utterly ludicrous that within the same region, some districts seed and others use a blind draw.

I agree 100% Coop. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why even play a team in your district if it's a blind draw?

Especially since there are ALL A tournaments there should be seeding. Small schools have their chance to compete against their own.

63rd District is blind Draw as well and for the same reason. The two smaller schools will not vote for it because it would reduce their chances of making it to the Regional Tournament year in and year out.

You make a great point---no reason for not seeding when the "A" schools have their own tournament.

Isn't that really an agruement for classification in baseball? Of course that's probably a different thread

Bronx, this is an age-old BGP debate.

Until the KHSAA mandates it it will never change. I can make arguments for both sides so I don't really put that much thought into it.

Ok TAC I guess we will do this again as we do every draw in basketball and baseball threads: :D

#1 The All A is not a state sanctioned tourney and is not just "A" schools if you were to use football classes.

#2 How about going to classes and then you can seed everyone in their class. Put yourself in the shoes of a Silver Grove you have 11 players one of them a 7th grader starting and you have to play with Scott and Campbell County. Yeah now that is much worse than a blind draw.

#3 Complaints about lopsided scores in regional because of blind draw and a weaker team getting in .....well you have really lopsided regular season scores and district tourney scores due to district seedign games that you have to play.

#4 What is more unfair? Forcing tiny schools to play the largest schools in the area or two good teams drawing each other randomly.

Perhaps KHSAA will never consider the change unless enough people start talking about it/giving it some thought. :sssh:

All the more reason to classify. If you're trying to protect Silver Grove, the only way to do so is to classify and put them in the smallest class you offer to allow them to play schools closest to their size. If Silver Grove still can't compete in whatever your smallest class is, that's a shame, but it's the best available option out there for them. You simply won't find a system that allows for every single school to be placed in a competitive environment for them because there are some schools - both large and small - that just don't have and never will have quality baseball programs. The fairest thing to do is lump together the schools based on their enrollment size.
