Scheduling two games on the same field with no lights in a district tourney

Featured Replies

I have to say I have never seen anybody try this but Brossart the host school schedules a 4:00 and 6:00 game with no lights. Now looking at this.................A game starts at 4 and once once it finishes you need at least 20 min. between games due to field maintenance and warm ups then 10 min. per team for infield. So by my math somebody thought it was a good idea to schedule games 2 hours apart figuring the first game was going to take......oh......90 minutes? Are you kidding me? The first game ended up going 8 innings but even if it ended in 7 innings it was already 6:30 which is about a normal game time (2 1/2 hours). So now you have two teams sitting there knowing that even if they play a 5 inning game you have no chance of finishing the game that night. Of course then the rains hit so they have not even completed the first inning. Even without the ran they only had an hour of day light left.

Not fair to make two teams split a game into two days. Now the rain obviously would have caused that but anybody with any sense knows that a high school baseball game is going to take longer than 1 1/2 hours plus you must factor in your maintance and infield time. A little thought would also anticipate a close game between CC and Calvary.................Meaning potential meetings on the mound, possible extra innings, etc.

Utterly ignornant to schedule games like that. Another issue you didn't even bring up is that I am guessing it would be much more of a rush for the two teams to get to the field and prepare themselves for a 4:00 start time. What exactly was the perceived benefit of doing this? Trying to ensure that the winning teams had the same availability to use certain pitchers?

Well........Brossart had the winner of Scott/SG playing them with less than 24 hours turn around time on Tues. Also if you look at the tourney the 4 vs 5 seed game is always played first since it is a play in game to see who plays the one seed. Then the 2 vs 3 seeds play. Completely inept set up.

I guess I shouldn't put this on Mel. That was probably unfair and, if so, I apologize to Mel.

Is is the call of the home team? Or is it agreed upon by the coaches/ADs in the district? In other words, could 3 coaches object and it not be allowed?

Clyde - While I am not 100% sure on this, I believe the host school each year makes the call on game times, setup, etc..I am sure that the other members of the district have a say and a comment on what time and they try to agree on it, but I think it is ultimately the host teams call.

In the 35th district, I know HC (host school this year) decided to schedule 1 game each night (Tues-Thurs) starting at 5:30 pm, when they could have easily doubled up say tomorrow night at 5:00 and 7:30 or something like that since the games are at Meinken and they have lights.

Is that what they're called?

I would have to disagree. Those lights are in no way up to standards set by KHSAA. There are dark spots all over the field. And what does BW have to do with it. There are a few high schools in the area that have sufficient lights. Dixie and St. Henry are two that come to mind.

Clyde the set up for the tourney is supposed to be agreed upon at a meeting but this district does not have a formal meeting (or at least did not last year or the year before and if they did this year my apologies) and so the stuff is "sent" out via e-mail and really does not enter in to much discussion about things like other districts would. And based upon hearing the discussions about the game times by the coaching staffs they were not happy but had no choice. Could have been Brossart set the times and sent them to people, could have been AD's, not sure. All I know it was a bad decision and an easy one to see well in advance that it was going to be a problem. In defense of Mel he is running the girls fast pitch tourney so somebody else with the school is running the basebal..

Scott-Silver Grove were slated to play the first game at 4pm with Calvary-Campbell Co. due to follow that one at 6pm. I believe Scott was unable make it to St. Mary's by 4pm (my guess would be due to transportation issues with the bus) so they agreed to flip the games.

They could have just played it at Campbell.......or used the same format Silver Grove used last year at NCC field when they hosted it there.

I don't disagree. That's just the reason I heard about why the games were flipped.

So what are the "standards" set by the KHSAA on lights Spartan79 since you are now an expert on lighting? I think people just like something to complain about sometimes. If it isn't the field conditions, it's the lights, if not the lights it's the parking, etc...

Let's just hope we can get a window of dry weather where we can get all these district games in at all fields the next few days.

With all of this I am sure no one is an expert on the topic. I will agree with Spartan, Meinken is terrible. The field is one of the worst around. When you leave the rough infield area to the outfield it drops off what seems like over a foot or so. The lighting has to be up there with the worst ones in the area. I do not get out to many night games. I have been to night games at Meinken and do not envy the outfielders. St Henry seems to be very good for night games. JMO

Here is a link to the KHSAA site on lighting standards and any one can make be an expert on it:
