mountainmojo68
I played at Pikeville in the 90's. We usually had about 50 kids come out which is good for 1a. My senior year I started on defense and can only remember about 3 guys who went both ways so it can be done.
RedRageFan
GRC with 4 games remaining on the schedule this year decided to go to little substitution and VERY few players going both ways so as to keep them fresh. They proceeded to lose 3 of the 4 games and exited early. Everyone including the player s saw early on it was a mistake. but the coaches stuck with it and ended our season early as usual. One would think the coaches would do that early in the season when the games don't matter to develop the depth, not at the end of the season. Interesting, very interesting. It's possible the coaches saw that the players were wearing down and possible even without the switch they could have lost those games. Maybe they felt like there only chance was to go with depth. I would venture to say if they had it to do over again, they would probably have just done it sooner.
Play 2 Win
One of the things McGlone and his coaches do at Russell is substitute alot. They use 5 or 6 subs on offense and more on defense. In a standard game, they've probably used 17 different players on offense and 18 or so on defense.\ It allows those players that go both ways to get a breather here and there and develops depth. So the next year when that sub is a starter, he's already got a lot of experience.
