What is a good 'Passer Rating' for D1 prospect QBs?

Featured Replies

Amen. I took my son to about 8 camps this past summer. He's getting interest from some D-1 schools that wouldn't have considered him otherwise if they even heard of him. Funny thing, he ran one of his poorest 40s at one camp but the coaches liked what they saw in all the other drills.

Great news bubba, I am glad for him. What camps did he go to?

People don't realize how important camps and combines are. I think along with the big 7 on 7's they are essentially the AAU of football.

Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State, Western KY, Eastern KY, Ohio U. Illinois and OSU. I guess that's only 7. He went to a Nike Rise combine in Atlanta also. We accidentally missed UK's camp. A couple we wanted to go to had scheduling conflicts. Middle Tennessee State, Ohio U and OSU had coaches from other colleges present. Ohio U and MTSU had 3-4 colleges represented. OSU had 6 or so.

Cats is right. If you want to get some looks from college coaches, the camps can't be beat. Like I said, go to a couple your junior year to see how good you need to be as a senior.

Those camps are huge. If I have a QB or any other play I think has the goods, they're going early and often to them. Jack99 is this a hypothetical question?

Question was somewhat hypothetical. The kid I have in mind is a 6'3" junior, still growing, very athletic, can throw 70+ standing, 50+ on both knees, and 35+ on his butt. He went to combines and four Senior Day camps this summer and is being looked at by all four of them plus other schools at the camps. I was just curious how important everyone thinks QB pass efficiency ratings are. Turns out, not very important.

P.S. Cincinnati had one of the best senior day camps. In addition to their coaches, they had 60-70 coaches representing 22 other programs assisting that day; several MAC schools, plus some D1aa and D2 programs. Kentucky and Vandi had great camps too, just not as many outside coaches assisting.

Nike Elite 11 Quarterback Camp is for serious D-1 prospects.

96% of Elite 11 Ouarterbacks attend BCS schools.

52% of Elite 11 Quarterbacks have went on to become starters at there respective schools.

I think that Rowan County's QB attened this camp last summer as a Junior. (or so I was told) I have had a chance to watch him play this fall. He is very talented, 6'4" athletic and throws a good ball. I am sure his rating is not impressive, but he is getting alot of serious attention for D-1 schools.

There's no doubt that the Elite 11 regional camps are a must for any junior QB that wants to go on to the next level. It's my understanding that the player submits film and coach's recommendation to be invited to a regional. Then they invite the top 11 junior QBs to the national Elite 11, right?

Yes. It used to be only 11 at the national camp, but I think they have expanded to many more athletes now.

I had forgotten, we went to the U.C. camp also. A lot of coaches from a lot of schools. Sounds like your son has what it takes to play in college. BTW - I've never even heard anyone mention the QB rating for a high school QB. In high school it's too easy to have all the tools to be a great QB and not have good receivers. Brett Favre played for a high school that rarely threw. (Ironicially, his dad was the coach.) He had one D-1 offer.

My suggestion would be to get him in a bunch of good camps this summer. If he doesn't have attention from the really big schools by now it may be too late, but there are always some late bloomers. Get some game film and send it to some schools. I would send game film and highlights, not just highlights. If you could find a traveling 7 on 7 team and could afford to do so that wouldn't be bad at all either. I'm not really for sure if anyone does that in this state though, but it's huge in the south.

As far as QB rating though, I don't know if anyone would even ask for that. Like I said it's more of a product of other factors like who you play with or against (in HS) than a true reflection on how the QB will do in college. There are alot of experienced coaches on this board that could really help you. I'm not experienced at all, these are just my observations from following alot of big school recruiting the last few years :thumb:. Good luck.

Has much more to do with size, speed and arm strength!
