Crossing the borders to play in Kentucky

Featured Replies

What border state school has been hurt the most in the past decade by a lack of players crossing the lines to play at a Kentucky school?

Pikeville?

Owensboro Catholic?

Covington Catholic?

Male?

Fulton County?

Middlesboro?

Who?

Not sure I understand the question, Scribe...

What do you mean by a "...a lack of players crossing the lines (state lines, I assume?) to play at a Kentucky school."

Certian programs (Pikeville for one example) benefitted from West Virginia players coming across the border in their hey day. I'm hearing that the decline of some programs are tied to the lack of those players crossing the border these days.

I don't recall any Ohio players coming over to play at Covington Catholic. Maybe there was one or two somewhere in their history, but in Greater Cincinnati the good players would choose to play at the Ohio school versus coming to Kentucky. In fact, before Ohio changed their rule and disallowed out of state players from playing in Ohio there were a lot of Northern Kentucky players that went to Ohio. In Moeller's hey day under Faust, there were quite a few N. Ky. players on Moeller's roster. I believe one of his best teams in the late 70's had 7 or 8 N. Ky. kids playing and most of those starting on Moeller's team. There still are N. Ky. kids crossing the river to go to school at the Ohio schools for a variety of reasons. Beechwood still loses kids to Ohio. There are two kids I know of that would have been key starters on last year's freshman team and eventually would have been key contributors on the varsity level that "moved" to Ohio schools.

My guess would be Pikeville. I have heard that they greatly benefitted from being able to play students from WVa back in the day.

I think Holy Cross has some.

Didn't realize that there was ever all that much crossover into KY...

I think Holy Cross has some.

Which Holy Cross?
