I agree, but this same truth can be applied to a plethora of politicians on a much larger scale.

 

Would Barack Obama be President today if he wasn't an excellent orator?

Would George W. Bush have been President if he wasn't George H.W. Bush's son?

Would Jeb Bush have been Florida's Governor if he wasn't George H.W. Bush's son?

Would Hillary Clinton have been a United States Senator, viable Presidential candidate, and Secretary Of State were she not Bill's wife?

Would Ronald Reagan have been Governor of California/President were it not for his career in Hollywood?

Would Arnold be Governor were it not for his Hollywood stardom?

Would John F. Kennedy have been President were he not the son of Joseph Kennedy?

 

Again, I completely agree that Farmer has the Agriculture Comm. position solely because of his basketball history. And if he runs for Governor, his fame as a former UK player will be his reason for being a serious contender for the position. But it's not as if he's blazing this trail by himself. Some of our country's highest officials gained their political clout, not based on their political savvy or experience, but on some other sphere of their life that catapulted them into the spotlight politically. And in some of those cases, the individuals performed their duties exceptionally well. In other cases, not so much.

 

Just because Farmer, or someone else for that matter, uses previously-established popularity/pedigree for political ambitions does not mean we should automatically write them off--especially when SO MANY others have done the very same thing--and often times proven to be very effective & successful in doing so.
