I am all for legal immigration. I am the son of an Immigrant.

 

I personally don't believe that sneaking into the country and having a baby makes the baby a US citizen. I also don't believe that was the intent of the 14th Amendment.

I feel that it is absurd to think that the intents of any significant amount of illegal immigrants center around "anchor babies." The vast majority of them are just trying to earn money to feed and cloth their families, not to come to the US, have a child and hope that it ends up providing them legal status.

 

Secondly, I assume that only the mother's legal status is in question. With the amount of 'fathers by donation only' that exists now, determining the status of the father may prove to be more difficult and more costly.

Because of the underlying dynamics of immigration and childbearing, the youngest children of unauthorized immigrants are considerably more likely than older ones to be U.S. citizens. I did not say that it was personal, just that it simply did not provide any evidence of the intent of illegal immigrants having children for the purpose of them being "anchors." The information in the link presented does nothing to further the case. As illegal immigration has increased over the past several years, it makes sense that there are increasingly more children born in the US to illegal immigrants than in the past.

I pretty much agree, I can see why this new law is a concern, however. TB&G makes some valid points, but the problem is at some point something has to be done, it can't continue at the pace it has been. We simply can't support it.

I really wish the administration would put more effort into working on this problem instead of focusing on things like Cap and Trade.

I never said that I didn't think that something needs to be done. I certainly do. I was very much in favor of President Bush's proposed immigration reform. What I don't support (and don't think is feasible) is the "round 'em all up and ship 'em back" type of approach.

There is a large group of people who do not believe that there would be a violation of constitutional rights.

 

The 14th Amendment was written to give citizenship to slaves. The children of parents who were forced to come here, not people who have entered the country illegally.

 

Many people believe that the current treatment of the 14th amendment is outside of it's constitutional design and it is being used as a loophole by people who have no constitutional rights.
