The fiscal side of that sounds like Rand Paul (and most Republicans). The social/moral side sounds very different.

 

 

Which is why you find many people of the generation that includes formerkywrestler, UKMustangFan and myself aligning with the Libertarians. The moral majority who want to guide how we are allowed to live our lives according to their morals have really alienated those of us who believe in personal freedom.

The national media sure picked up on this one as "an anti-establishment message"?? Of course most made sure to mention it was a "Republican" anti-establishment message, along with the huge Dem. upset in Penn. 12??

I don't know enough about the Libertarians to have an opinion. Educate me on who they are, how they differ from Republicans and why a Libertarian would run as a Republican.

 

Now, the joking man in me says that Libertarians are flat-out crazy. My first question always comes down to "who's going to pave the roads so you can go to work?"

 

And while there are, indeed, those among the libertarian flock who think that paved roads are unnecessary, there are probably 100x as many Republicans who feel that the concept of a publicly-funded, educated population is just plain silly.

 

Personally, I buy into a lot of the libertarian platform from the standpoint of personal freedom. I think it's dumb that abortion is a government issue, and I wholly reject the idea of other people thinking they know better for me than myself when it comes to vices, especially when it comes to flimsy moral and religious excuses for trying to control the population.

I actually agree with you on this post to an extent. I firmly believe that the majority (not all) of registered Republicans and Democrats are sheep. Trey was everything the current Republican party asks for in a candidate and yet got trounced. Rand Paul is Libertarian Lite and yet is able to convince the sheep to follow along.

 

A Rush listening, hard right-leaning friend of mine was fully on the Grayson train, but when I talked to him yesterday he was telling me how great a guy Rand was. Luckily I don't delete e-mails very often so I was able to forward a few of his anti-Rand e-mails on to him...you know, because that's what friends are for!

What do you base this silly opinion on? I know hundreds of Republicans and not a one thinks anything remotely like this. In fact, they are all for an educated workforce as it makes good business sense. They just don't see it as a Federally "public funded" function.

You must have been getting different mailings than I did as I didn't interpret them anything remotely like you did. As I said, you missed the part where he combines the tax cutting with spending cuts. How else do you cut government? Seems very reasonable to me. I do think that he will need to cut Palin loose if he wants to have any chance in a general election. I also don't see anything "isolationist" as he has not even advocated our pulling out of the UN. He thinks dues should be voluntary to see what countries are truly commited to it's mission. Again, a very reasonable idea to me and certainly not "far right" as they want us out of the UN.
