Covington Catholic 13 Simon Kenton 0 (5 innings)

Should we assume rust was a factor in Shumate's WHIP of 2.0?

Interesting stat - WHIP - but I've always wondered how important it is. In this instance, it looks like the pitcher faced 17 batters through 4 innings, which is only one over the minimum (therefore having only one runner left on base). By comparison, I saw where CovCath's opponent left 12 runners on base through 4 innings the night before. What would the WHIP be for that pitcher?

Now for the relevancy point - the pitchers in those two examples gave up 0 and 1 run in those two games respectively.

The 2 hole has 2 SACs this year. Seems like Krumps has gotten away from it.

Just a thought nothing more nothing less but maybe 2 sac's doesn't mean that is all that the spot has attempted and or have you looked at how many times the runners were on in front of that spot? You can't sac bunt, if no one is on! :idunno:

You are not missing anything at all, and neither are the coaches but who do you not pitch? Gerwe, Warning, Brueggman, Shumate, Schlagbaum or Klein? You tell me, who do you not pitch in only 11 games so far this season?

BTW Hellman threw against three SK pinch hitters in the last innings of the game. None of the batters he faced were starters!

With the number of games this weekend and next week, look for Hellman to throw some innings!

The CCH pitching staff appears to have a season ERA of 2.18 and has an ERA of 1.43 over the last 7 games.

Actually five over the minimum.

Note: With some extra time today, I was double checking my stats (proving them prior to adding them into my .exl file) on this game and I left off a SF for Siemer which is how he got his RBI in the 3th inning.

No way of knowing that from my end. However, your theory adds to my belief that Severson should be in the #2 hole.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, Pee Wee's Place Offensive play of the game The BAWAC Inc. Defensive play of the game and Grubers Grill star of the game!

King Louie, to bad you weren't at this game, as you would have loved seeing all the underclassmen getting into the game and you would have got a kick out of hearing all the Senors cheering on their fellow players and friends!

After I eat some dinner!

I do like hearing that Krumps is working on developing some other players, and really like hearing the seniors were supportive. Great job guys!

CovCath play Newport Public on Saturday in the Doc Morris (wooden bat tourney) @ CovCath at 10am. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Ryle vs Campbell game which will follow the CovCath vs Newport game and the winners of those two games, will play against each other in the third game of the day, all at CovCath.

Very nice to see all these guys get at least one at bat!!:thumb:

I don't know but maybe my math is wrong. Shumate faced 17 batters in 4 innings. Thats 12 outs. So 5 batters got on by hit, walk or hbp; however, he gave up 3 hits, 3 walks and 2 hbp. What gives?

1st inning

walk/ 1b hit/ DP 6-3/ K

2nd inning

hbp/ 1b hit/ hbp/ 6-2/ DP 6-4-3

3rd inning

K/ walk/ DP 5-4-3

4th

2b hit/ K/ 2-3/ walk/ U-4

WHIP is a great indicator. You can't score without getting on base and WHIP measures how many the pitcher is putting on base in an inning.

Indeed, but WHIP is not always indicative of how many runs are being scored. Errors & hit batters do not increase the figure, while double play balls could limit its relevance.

Don't worry KL, they'll all get a varsity patch to put on their jackets at the end of the year.

Its a good indicator IMO in judging a pitcher's ability to limit baserunners. A high WHIP is going to lead to runs. Yes, there will be exceptions but they're just that, exceptions.

BTW that # 2 spot had a hit, a walk, scored a run and stole a base vs Newport today and against Campbell County had 2 sac bunts, scored one of the four runs and had a walk. Oh and the 1st sac bunt make it possible for Matt Klein to hit his SF to 8 to score the CovCath 1st run and his second sac bunt helped score the fourth and final run as that spot moved Siemer to second and allowed Klein to knock him in for the final run of the inning with his single.
