The Good: Adam Shumate pitching four innings of shutout baseball while only giving up 3 hits, and Michael Hellman closing out the 5th in outstanding fashion by striking out two of the three batter he faced. Finally a huge tip of Theoldguy cap to the starting infield of Klein at third, Stein at short stop, Siemer at second, Gerwe on first and Lankheit at home plate, as they turn three double plays in three straight innings. Great "D' guys.

Pee Wee's Place Offensive play of the game:

 

Top of the fourth and CovCath is up 7-0.

 

Klein earns a Nutini (hbp) in the back, man on first no outs. The SK pitcher tries to pick off Klein at first but instead throws the ball away. No outs runner on second. Gerwe walks, men on second and first, no outs. Stayton gets on via a E-4 everybody moves up. Bases loaded and Martin gets a single and drives in a run. 8-0 still no outs, bases still loaded. Severson gets a hit and drives in a run to make it 9-0. Still no outs, bases still loaded. Lankheit walks and in comes a run 10-0 bases still loaded and still no outs. Sean Hamm hits a rocket to RF but the righter fielder makes a nice catch of the ball but Mr. Hamm earns himself a SF with his first RBI of the season. One out, 11-0. Austin Taylor at the plate but he goes U-5 for the second out, then David Brueggman smacks the ball into right center and earns himself a double and two rbi's to make the score 13-0.

 

BAWAC Inc. Defensive play of the game:

 

Bottom of the first and CovCath has a five to nothing lead. SK gets runners on first and second with no outs but a 6-3 double play and then a K end the the SK inning.

 

Bottom of the second SK gets the bases loaded with no outs but after a 5-2 put out at the plate, CovCath then turns a 6-4-3 Double play to end that inning.

 

In the third, first batter K's but then a walk but Shumate as he did all night long, got the next batter to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end that inning.

 

Grubers Grill star of the game: Got to go with the entire CovCath infield and Schumate. Having your HS "D" turn one DP is great but then having them turn two DP's is outstanding but to turn three DP in three straight innings is just plain old fashion solid great defense, not only by your infield but your pitcher too, as he was the one getting them to hit the ball on the ground. Great job gentlemen!

CovCath play Newport Public on Saturday in the Doc Morris (wooden bat tourney) @ CovCath at 10am. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Ryle vs Campbell game which will follow the CovCath vs Newport game and the winners of those two games, will play against each other in the third game of the day, all at CovCath.

For those who don't know what WHIP is/means: WHIP= Walks and Hits per Inning Pitched: It is a measurement of the pitcher's ability to keep batters off base. Calculated as (Bases on Balls + Hits allowed) / (Innings pitched).

 

You can assume all you want, but I honestly think it had more to do with the mound at SK. The new SK pitchers mound is huge (it is legal) but compared to CovCath and some other HS fields, it is indeed a mountain!

 

BTW a tip of Theoldguy hat to SK and their new baseball complex. This was SK first home game of the season and while the surrounding area is not yet completed, give this diamond some time and it will be outstanding and much nicer than the Dixie baseball field!

We all have different philosophies but the problem I have with the above is that you say "for the top of the lineup." #2 is struggling at the plate. So in order for the "#2 hole bunts" philosphy to work you need to have either a)Sevvy leading off an inning or b)the #8 hitter not getting an out. How many times per game does that situation arise? Add in that this team doesn't have the fire power that the last 3 teams have had so that #2 man needs to more of an OBP guy vs a SAC guy.

 

Let me add that I'm only about 700 wins behind Krumps so take my thoughts for what they're worth.

You are not missing anything at all, and neither are the coaches but who do you not pitch? Gerwe, Warning, Brueggman, Shumate, Schlagbaum or Klein? You tell me, who do you not pitch in only 11 games so far this season?

 

BTW Hellman threw against three SK pinch hitters in the last innings of the game. None of the batters he faced were starters!

 

With the number of games this weekend and next week, look for Hellman to throw some innings!

The 2 hole has 2 SACs this year. Seems like Krumps has gotten away from it.
