All I can say is wow. Many I spoke with in Corbin thought that they would be competing for the region this year and give North a run for their money. North Laurel is a very young team with a tremendous freshman class. But with KY Gatorade POY from 2009, senior pitcher Megan Taylor, it looks like they are going to be awfully good again this year. I expect North to win, but not by this much this early in the season.

Coach Weaver expected this team to be very good. He stated a few years ago that they should be competing for a state title again for the next few years. After a lackluster performance in the state tourney last year following up their state runnerup in 2008, they obviously worked extremely hard this off season.

I look for Corbin to struggle, at least in the early part of the season. They have some young, inexperienced players playing some key positions. They are not really close to playing at North Laurel's level yet and will likely be a notch below South Laurel as well.

North has a similar situation as far as youth, but their freshman are not typical freshman. It is the best freshman group I have ever seen at North Laurel. 10 of their 18 varsity players are freshman or 8th graders. At least 3 are starting (I believe). SS was the starter last year as an 8th grader, 3rd base is a frosh who started some varsity at 3rd last year, catcher is freshman, etc. But that group has it all, ... power, speed, pitching, fielding, high IQ, and are really good kids. In middle school they were playing more frosh and jv games/tourneys than middle school games. Weaver challenged them hard when he took over at North to build for the future and they are really stepping up. Also, having Megan Taylor on the mound never hurts! And the freshman pitcher behind her, Baldwin, has all the tools to be a dominant pitcher when her time comes.

I have learned that North doesn't rebuild (lost 6 senior starters the year before and 2 last year), they do just reload. Summer ball helps them a great deal and the fact that Weaver doesn't let their youth become an issue.
