Coongratulations to Zach! He's had a good career, and I know he and the Wildcats will be looking to make some noise in the district and hopefully at Henry County in the region. Good luck to them!

Senior night at Oldham County HS, and head coach Jason Holland honored his five seniors by starting all five - Kiley O'Bradovich, Brandon Cook, Matt Masters, Vincent Allen, and Andrew Tincher (Cook is the only one of the five who normally starts).

 

Gallatin County took advantage of the four subs starting by racing out to a 9-2 lead. Bryce Carlton was hot early, hitting two threes and a deuce for all eight of his first half points in the first period. GC settled for a 15-14 lead after one.

 

Oldham came alive in the second period. The Colonels - who played ten players in the first half, eight of whom scored - broke the Wildcat press with ease and passed efficiently, leading to layups. Meanwhile, the much taller Colonels were dominating on the glass against a Gallatin team that started only one kid over 6'0". At the half, Oldham had staked out a 29-23 lead.

 

The lead ballooned to ten several times in the third, as Oldham hit 10 of 14 shots in the period, and seven Colonels scored. But every time, Gallatin battled back, knocking the margin down to 5 or 6 points. Still, the Colonels pushed the lead to 7 by the end of the period, at 49-42. It appeared that Oldham was in control, despite a relatively close score.

 

In the fourth, Gallatin simply ratcheted the pressure - figuratively and literally - up another notch, and Oldham was unable to answer. The press which the Colonels had done pretty well against suddenly became stifling, and turnovers began to lead to Gallatin layups. The much smaller Wildcats went all-out on the glass, often beating the taller Colonels to the rebound.

 

The Colonels managed just 10 shots in the fourth, their fewest of any quarter, and they hit just three. This after hitting 23 of 42 shots in the first three periods (54.8%). In addition, while Gallatin was hitting most of their FTs, the Colonels struggled, hitting just 6 of 13 at the charity stripe.

 

With 3:07 left in the contest, Joel Carlton tied the game at 56. The Wildcats moved ahead for the first time since early in the 2Q at 58-57 with 2:37 to play, and Zach Jones hit two free throws to give the Wildcats the lead for good at 60-59 with 1:02 to play.

 

Zach Jones hit 1 of two free throws with 9 seconds left to make it 63-59, and Oldham moved quickly downcourt...Nolan Denise scored on a putback with 1.6 seconds to play, making it 63-61, and the Colonels fouled Jones on the inbounds play with 1 second left. Jones missed the first, and missed the second - apparently on purpose to keep the Colonels from setting up a play - and Brandon Cook's 3/4 court shot was short for the win at the buzzer.

 

Congratulations to both teams on a spirited and hard-fought game and to the Wildcats for the win.

Good assessment. Really thought Joel Carlton played very well. He does the little things that are not noticed on a stat sheet. When he utilizes his offensive abilities, he makes Gallatin much harder to defend.

This makes Coach Jones's fifth 20 win season i believe (98,99,07,08,10), and had a 19 win season in 2006. His son Zach has been a pleasure to watch over the years.
