Shelby County 74 South Oldham 53

The bad thing is, this game wasn't as close as the final score says. This was a 30 point game.

I think revenge was a huge motivator in this game. Shelby lost to South last year after dominating the Dragons for years, and they had a decided chip on their shoulder. They were definitely motivated to win this game.

Recent setbacks for the Rockets certainly helped set the emotional stage, too.

Wow. Apparently South used up all their three-pointers against Bardstown on Tuesday.

Tough to beat Shelby playing fast. Kind of a catch 22 for South who also plays fast.

I guess S. Oldham's cupcake schedule finally ran out!

An intriguing comment. I wouldn't say South's schedule is "bone-crushing" by any stretch, but to call it a "cupcake" schedule is ill-informed at best... Two of South's victims - Webster County (12-4) and Edmonson County (11-4) - are off to pretty good starts this season. And Apollo - which South blasted by 19 - may have a so-so record but the Eagles have beaten the top team in the Fifth Region (North Hardin) and lost to Bowling Green by just one.

As I have said in earlier threads regarding South Oldham, they do not play tough enough defense to have a chance at beating the top teams in the state, like Shelby County, or teams in the top 15 or 20 in the state, when it matters.

The top teams in the state would be able contest the three point line, turn the Dragons over and score a lot. (Just ask North Oldham about that type of thing)

Team defense, and handling defensive pressure on offense, wins against the better teams in Kentucky high school basketball.

Shooting a lot of threes is interseting, just not important.

Curious about the bolded comment. What do you mean?

Since the three really isn't a major part of North Oldham's offense - although they have had a few really good three point shooters over the years, like Kevin Allen and Alex Foley, it statistically has not been the main part of their offense - I'm trying to figure out your point.

As the broadcaster for the three Oldham County schools, I've seen every North Oldham team, and - since current coach Danny Edelen arrived - the North philosophy is to attack the basket and get layups, with their press generating a lot of the opportunities. Statistically, the three is not a major part of their offense...

I was speaking to the team defense of NOHS and South Oldham. North Oldham has given up 70 or more points in nine games this year including 83, 83, 84, 85, 95 and 97. WOW-- Either their defense is flat out bad, or they take quick, rushed shots and the other teams are getting lots of easy baskets, or they are making tons of turnovers. Maybe all three.

In the case of SOHS they have played what I would consider two of the better teams around the 6th, 7th and 8th regions (Shelby County and Bullit East). Shelby scored 74 and BE scored 68, a 71 point average against these two schools.

Until NOHS and SOHS can hold the better teams to less scoring, they have no chance to beat these type teams.

Just the facts......

Sure, and blue and green are both dark colors, but they aren't alike. You chose to compare two completely different teams as if they were somehow the same. Or maybe this is simply "Bash Oldham County Day"?

I don't see the relevance of North Oldham's defense to this thread. You've pulled a team out of thin air (North) and set them next to South as if the two were twins. North Oldham's defense is nothing at all like South Oldham's in either scheme or style. North Oldham is a physical, full-court pressing defense that depends on the press to succeed. North struggles in the half court because they are such an incredibly small team and start three players under 6'0". South occasionally presses, but it's not their primary focus, and they are not typically as physical as North, although they are significantly taller at every position except center.

It's a real apples & oranges comparison, so why choose to compare South to North? There are many other teams much more like South that would be a much more valid comparison. But really, why do you need to compare to ANY team to make the simple point that a strong defense leads to more wins???

North Oldham has also played a very difficult schedule. When you play their style of play against superior opponents the scoreboard is going to light up. The one thing you can't argue about North is that they play hard for 32 minutes.

We're way off topic. The thread is about South Oldham and Shelby County, not North Oldham.

I'm not sure but what this loss was a good one for South. South had been on a roll - whether because they were playing well or because they had been playing a relatively easy schedule, or both - and perhaps needed a wakeup call.

It also gives South a mental "edge" should the two meet again. It'll be interesting to see - should South and Shelby meet again - whether this loss puts a chip on South's shoulder or whether it allows Shelby to make South doubt their abilities.

These two teams have almost the identical personnel they both had in last year's game, won by South Oldham.

I looked like South had a lot of uncontested shot attempts in the first half, that just did not fall. That is just the way the ball bounces at times. I thought they played much better in the second half.

They will be fine.

Anybody start a North vs South Defense thread?:D
