Covington Catholic 44 Elder, OH 31 (Frosh)

Featured Replies

Anther quality win for the Colonels in defeating Cincinnati Elder by 13 points.

Indeed the reason for this victory was again CovCath played a tough nosed "D".

Both teams at time played like frosh as they both wildly threw the ball away but CovCath held on to this victory.

Leading scores

CovCath

Tobler 14

Frederick 12

CovCath Frosh improves their record to 7-2 with their only losses coming from LexCath and Lou St. X.

CovCath next plays Cooper HS at Cooper this coming Saturday 1-2-10 at 4:30pm in a Cooper HS vs. CovCath Triple header.

Good size young man and he had 6 in the Mason County game!

How did Elder look? I saw their roster and they had some bigs. Who are the Cov Cath bigs?

First Elder had I think around 17 players on the bench and from what I understand, they have a "A" and "B" squads, so maybe both squads were there for this game. We were also told that Elder has three/four Freshmen playing up a level or two!

Elder is big, football big. #44 has to be a Frosh lineman but is rather quick and agile for such a big kid. #51 is another good sized kid and a rather good shooter.

CovCath? :sssh: Come to the CovCath vs HHS triple header on 1/5 to find out! :D

Honestly, at this time, Coach Sorrell and Coach Murphy are playing at least nine to ten players. For the first time that I have seen them play this season, the coaches had the same five in for an entire quarter but a pretty much different lineup entered the game to start the second quarter and did just as well as the first crew did on the floor in their quarter! This Frosh team strength is their depth of quality players!

I too like this group of freshmen. I knew more about the guards than the bigs and was thinking that the inside game would be a concern for the team. However, the bigs seem to be holding their own against some good competition. Good job guys!

As for Elder, I do believe they like some of the other schools across the river have A and B teams, and keep more guys in their program, allowing them to grow and see who develops late. I have always thought this would benefit more schools to do the same thing. You just never know which kid is going to get the big growth spurt, or develop into the stud player, later.

You can have an A&B squad when you have a hundred boys try out for BB. Most NKY schools are probably lucky to get 20 boys to try out. Besides most freshman give up because the playing time has dwindled down from the 6th to 7th to 8th grade. GCL schools dont have one middle school to draw from so everyone is on an even playing field for the most part. The A&B squads need to be at the middle school levels so the most kids possible are in the mix.

I also don't think it is allowed by the KHSAA. I believe that you are restricted to a certain number of games. If you had an "A" and "B" team, both teams would count against your games allowed.

I agree that some schools might get those numbers, but most might be a little strong. I also would guess that if there were more spots open for players, more would try out. I certainly understand why all schools do not do it. But I also wish schools would have options to keep more boys, and girls for that matter, involved in the program for longer periods than they do now.

I believe twenty was the number at the HHS freshman tryouts.

I will be there for sure and I know many of those boys as my son has played against them over the past few years in AAU. They are nice players and should do well in their careers. I will pm ya and tell ya where I will be sitting and we can finally meet.

20 may have turned out for tryouts but they are down to 10 on the roster and I can tell you that nobody got cut that should have made the team.
