Avery, Pittman or not, there is no reason for Holmes to be down at half, I was there and was very disappointed with the way they looked. They were down 12-9 with 1 second left in the first, then Holmes hit 4 3's in a row to take a lead only to let Villa close the half on a 12-4 run and with the lead. They looked awful.

 

2nd Half the Dogs imposed there will with a very nice press and playing uptempo and in transition. Once the dogs were in control they went back to a slower pace and made more mistakes. This is not a half court team, they have to play uptempo or they are playing to the advantage of weaker opponets.

When Villa went up 29-27, Holmes finally started pressing and playing uptempo and went on a 24-2 run over the next 5 or 6 minutes. Holmes is going to have to play uptempo in order to be successful. The lack of a true point guard hurts them because nobody attacks the zone and they start settling for jump shots.

 

When they started pressing, playing uptempo, and forcing turnovers, they got lay up after lay up in transition.

 

I do think not having Pittman and Avery has hurt them the last two nights though. Pittman's size would make a difference on the boards in a game like this. The one thing that's been constant with this team though is their defense.

Thanks for the clarification. I overheard a few people behind me talking about it and one of them mentioned that it was a fracture. Didn't make sense considering another person had told me he was going to the doctor in 2 or 3 days to see exactly what the problem was.

 

Keep us updated, if you don't mind. Avery is going to be a key piece to Holmes' success the rest of the season.

I'd like to give a little credit to Villa. I see a lot of DIII games, so I have seen them play this year twice. They flat out busted their butts this game. They have absolutely no reason to be in a game with Holmes, but they made the most of it. Yes, Holmes won by 23, but if you were there, you know that first 20 or so minutes were very special to that team. Would they ever be able to do that again, No, probably not. But for a team to go out and play like that agianst the defending state champs, having what seemed like only

their parents as their only cheering section, was pretty cool to watch. I think Holmes will be fine as the year progresses. They need a point guard, and a less big headed attitude. But, what can I say, if I was the defending champ, I would be big headed too. When they realize that the games are not won on paper and the past, they will be fine.

 

BTW, the officiating in this game was very poor. I would just like to see consistancy. First half they let the kids play, second was called much tighter.

I felt the difference in the game was when they started trapping Bryan on the baseline when they were pressing and forced him to pass out of it. None of the other Villa players could handle the pressure and they started committing turnovers which led to easy transition points for Holmes.

I thought the same thing. Villa took a 29-27 lead and then Ricardo Johnson got a steal and dunk and that seemed to ignite the Holmes offense. From that point on they went on a 20-0 run and really stepped things up defensively.

 

Villa also seemed to wear down and lose their confidence once Hayes got back to back baskets in less than 15 seconds to put Holmes up 10.

I had heard about this kid right before tip off, and how despite his size he scores and this and that by the person that I was sitting with. I think he is solid, he will hoist it up from anywhere and despite his size he will try to get to the rim. However when you have someone as big and athletic as RJ guarding you, it can make it tough.
