Newport Wildcats offensive machine

Featured Replies

Not to discredit two large margin victories, but is anything really proven by thumping Villa or SCPA (Cincy)??? I remember Holy Cross going to Maysvill St Pats in '92 and throwing up 106 but they were never proclaimed and "offensive juggernaut".

I'll wait to see the offensive power against a few of the better programs. Holmes is a start, but Bryan Station and NCC will help prove (or disprove) your point.

I saw Newport play all summer, seen their preseason scrimmages and now some game action. They are legit.

Holmes lost to a Small prep school Bowman Academy from Indiana in only their 3rd year of organized basketball over the weekend. They have some work to do, so there just might be a chink in the bulldogs armor for the wildcats to trounce on

I agree that Newport is legit. But before we start giving them a title, let's see how they do when the competition is stepped up. It's a very long season and the best athletes don't always win out. See Holmes at Boone Co last year.

As far as Bowman Academy, you may want to look them up a little. They have the best sophomore in Indiana in 6'5 Dejuan Marrero (offers from Indiana, Ohio St, Illinois, and Purdue) and they also have two more D1 prospects in 6'1 Tyrae Robinson and 6'4 Chris Bond. They were 19-4 last year and lost nobody from that team. I wouldn't exactly call them a small prep school....they also beat South Laurel by 24 the night before beating Holmes. They're a legit team and would be top 10, possibly top 5 here in KY.

By small, I mean in number of students! There is this horrible thing in Indiana now called class basketball. They are a 1A school(small class). They finished in the Final four last season losing to Triton who then lost to Jac-Cen-Del.

Did not say they were not a quality team, they are an above quality team, probably better than any team Holmes faced all of last year. But at this point in time i do not feel Holmes is the same team of a year ago. Still working on their chemistry together with some new players and the biggest issue they have is depth.

That being said, I like Newport, they have matured, and appear to have jelled to this point, they will see Holmes on the 14th, i will be there, and might see them again in the Lloyd tourney. Gonna be fun season for the 9th I think!

I haven't seen Holmes in person this year so I can't really comment on them. With them returning the Johnson Brothers and Pittman though, it's only a matter of time before they start clicking on all cylinders. I believe they started out slow last year too. But this thread is about Newport...not Holmes. When the time comes, I'll be glad to discuss that match up with you.

Until then, good luck to the Wildcats and hopefully they can live up to these lofty expectations by some on here.
